SatTerm experience: vocabulary control and facet analysis help improve the software requirement solicitation process

<p>One of the most difficult steps in the software development process is moving from&nbsp;requirements written in natural, uncontrolled language, to the formalisms required by the design&nbsp;modelling languages. To solve this issue, practitioners should pay attention to the possibility of&nbsp;applying vocabulary control and knowledge representation techniques to produce better&nbsp;specifications. The use of controlled vocabularies and the modelling of the conceptual relationships&nbsp;between concepts in a specific domain are expected to improve the quality of the specifications.<br> Vocabulary control and semantic modelling are promising tools to avoid the most frequent problems&nbsp;in the requirements specification process: lack of consistency and ambiguity.&nbsp;This paper provides a detailed description of the development process of an ontology used for&nbsp;requirements modelling in the area of satellite control systems. The process applied is based on well-established practices and guidelines applied for the construction of controlled vocabularies and&nbsp;faceted classifications schemas. Engineers can use the ontology when writing system specifications&nbsp;using predefined templates. The use of this ontology ensures the consistency of the specifications&nbsp;written by different engineers improves the communication with other parties involved in the system&nbsp;construction activities and sets the foundations for a semi-automated generation of models for&nbsp;subsequent design activities.</p>

Mothers in a cooperatively breeding bird increase investment per offspring at the pre-natal stage when they will have more help with post-natal care

<p>In many cooperative societies, including our own, helpers assist with the post-natal care of breeders&rsquo; young and may thereby benefit the post-natal development of offspring. Here, we present evidence of a novel mechanism by which such post-natal helping could also have beneficial effects on pre-natal development: By lightening post-natal maternal workloads, helpers may allow mothers to increase their pre-natal investment per offspring. We present the findings of a decade-long study of cooperatively breeding white-browed sparrow-weaver,&nbsp;<em>Plocepasser mahali</em>, societies. Within each social group, reproduction is monopolized by a dominant breeding pair, and non-breeding helpers assist with nestling feeding. Using a within-mother reaction norm approach to formally identify maternal plasticity, we demonstrate that when mothers have more female helpers, they decrease their own post-natal investment per offspring (feed their nestlings at lower rates) but increase their pre-natal investment per offspring (lay larger eggs, which yield heavier hatchlings). That these plastic maternal responses are predicted by female helper number, and not male helper number, implicates the availability of post-natal helping per se as the likely driver (rather than correlated effects of group size), because female helpers feed nestlings at substantially higher rates than males. We term this novel maternal strategy &ldquo;maternal front-loading&rdquo; and hypothesize that the expected availability of post-natal help either allows or incentivizes helped mothers to focus maternal investment on the pre-natal phase, to which helpers cannot contribute directly. The potential for post-natal helping to promote pre-natal development further complicates attempts to identify and quantify the fitness consequences of helping.</p>

Ancient varieties can help control weed density while preserving weed diversity

<p>Weeds are a major component of agricultural diversity affecting crop yield and ecosystem services. Compared to modern varieties, ancient wheat cultivars (released before 1960) are taller and this trait can be used to control weeds in organic farming systems, especially without herbicides. However, there is still a lack of quantitative assessments of the relative contribution of wheat breeding-history (ancient vs modern varieties) and synthetic inputs in explaining weed density and community structure. In this study, a field experiment was undertaken where five modern and five ancient varieties were either treated as in a conventional system with synthetic inputs (nitrogen, herbicide and fungicide) or as in an organic system without synthetic inputs. Crop light interception and weed density was recorded for 12 weeks until crop maturity. On average, ancient varieties reduced weed density by 17% compared with modern varieties, while the application of chemical inputs was responsible for an average reduction of 37%. The stronger competitive effect of ancient varieties was associated with increased sunlight interception. Species richness was higher in the absence of inputs for some weeks, but not by the end of the experiment. The field-based results illustrated that ancient varieties helped to control weed density in organic systems that do not rely on synthetic inputs to control weeds. Despite this effect of crop interference on weed density, a reduction in weed diversity was not observed. These findings could be of particular interest to promote agrobiodiversity in agricultural systems without synthetic inputs.</p>

<p>The data and accompanying .R scripts were used to test whether having experience as a helper affected a number of different breeding and fitness related parameters in the Seychelles warbler (<em>Acrocephalus sechellensis</em>) in the paper "The impact of helping experience on helper life-history and fitness in a cooperatively breeding bird." </p> <p><strong>Datasets</strong><br><em>statusInfo.xlsx</em>: data collected over a focal individual's lifetime. <br><em>natalInfo.xlsx</em>: data pertaining to the natal environment of the focal bird. <br><em>lastSeen.xlsx</em>: data used to calculate when the bird was last seen alive. <br><em>summerIndex.xlsx</em>: data used to determine whether a particular field period was during a summer or winter season.<br><em>territoryQuality.xlsx</em>: data used to determine the territory quality of each territory during a particular field period.</p> <p><strong>Statistical analyses </strong><br><em>experiencePrep.R</em>: the script used to prepare the data and calculate the necessary model variables prior to running the analyses. <br><em>experienceAnalyses.R</em>: the script used to run the analyses and generate the related graphs. </p> <p>More detailed information regarding the contents of each dataset can be found in the READ.ME</p> <p>From this, we found that helping experience had no significant association with any of the metrics considered, except that individuals with helping experience had an older age at first dominance, and dominant females with helping experience had longer lifespans than those that had never helped. In addition, we found that females with co-breeding experience produced more adult offspring (≥1 year old) after acquiring dominance, and had a higher lifetime reproductive success than females that had never co-bred.</p>

<h2>Survey to help identify whether Octopus might help researchers produce high quality, open research</h2><p>In order to complement in-depth, but necessarily small sample size, interviews, an online survey allowed us to reach a broader population to gain some quantitative data on the current research culture and barriers to best practice, as well as whether the Octopus platform might help overcome them.</p><p>The finalised survey was implemented on EUSurvey. It is a fully open source online survey platform developed and administered by the European Commission, adhering to relevant privacy regulations (e.g. the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)).</p><p>The survey was open from 17 January to 5 February 2023.</p><p>Details on the implementation of this survey is published on Octopus.</p>
