Abundance and occupancy of the western yellow-billed cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) in Sonora, Mexico

<p><span>Unveiling factors that determine abundance and distribution of endangered wildlife species has relevant implications in their conservation across international boundaries.</span><span> For instance, the Western Distinct Population (as defined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) of the yellow-billed cuckoo <em>Coccyzus americanus</em> (Linnaeus, 1758) has disappeared in most of the species' range </span><span>across the western United States and southwestern Canada, but little is known about the conservation status at the southern edge of its breeding distribution in Mexico. To fill this information gap, we estimated abundance and occupancy rates of yellow-billed cuckoos using a standard broadcast call survey protocol. We used Bayesian spatial count models to estimate cuckoo population density at survey sites. We used Bayesian hierarchical models to estimate the effects of geography, climate, and vegetation on occupancy rates while accounting for imperfect detection. Mean cuckoo count per transect for all sites was <em>C</em></span><span> = 9.00 </span><span>±</span><span> 0.45 cuckoos. Overall cuckoo density was <em>D</em> </span><span> = 13.18 cuckoos/km<sup>2</sup> (SD(<em>D</em></span><span> </span><span>) = 5.61 cuckoos/km<sup>2</sup>). Overall cuckoo occupancy in Sonora was <em>φ</em></span><span> = 0.538 (95%CrI(</span><em>φ</em><span>) = 0.544–0.600) but showed strong geographic variation. Relatively high occupancy levels suggest yellow-billed cuckoo populations in Sonora may be robust, but they are largely reliant on declining high-tree cover.</span></p>

<p>With an alarming increase in chronic diseases like childhood asthma and allergies, there is an increased focus on the exposure of young children to indoor biological and chemical air pollutants. Our study of 125 daycares throughout Norway demonstrates that the indoor mycobiome not only reflects cooccurring outdoor fungi but also includes a high abundance of yeast and mold fungi with an affinity for indoor environments.</p>

Dispersal ability and niche breadth influence interspecific variation in spider abundance and occupancy

<p><span>The relationship between species local abundance and their regional distribution (occupancy) is one of the most extensively recognised and investigated patterns in ecology. While exceptions exist, the generally held model is that locally abundant species also tend to be more widespread geographically. However, there is only a limited understanding of both the mechanisms driving this relationship, and their scale dependency. Here we use occupancy and abundance data for 123 species of spider from across the Canary Islands to understand how both dispersal ability and niche breadth might mediate variation among species for local abundance and occupancy. We test the predictions that (i) dispersal ability explains variation among species for both abundance and occupancy, and (ii) species with a higher degree of habitat specialisation, reflecting more limited niche breadth, will have both higher occupancy and abundance. We find no evidence within habitat patches for an effect of dispersal ability on either local abundance or site occupancy, while across all patches species with higher dispersal ability tend to occupy more sites. Species largely restricted to laurel forests have higher abundance than species with broader niche breadth, but similar occupancy. </span><span>The study revealed that dispersal ability and niche breadth were significant predictors of the abundance-occupancy relationship, highlighting the importance of both factors for understating patterns of abundance and occupancy among spider species.</span></p>

Occupational Hazards of Indian Shrimp Farm Workers

<p>The paper reviews a range of global aquaculture health and safety literature to inform and contribute to the development of a socio-economic profile of Indian shrimp farm workers including the occupational hazards and injuries they face. In addition, sixty shrimp farm workers were interviewed from each of the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The study revealed that all shrimp farm workers were male, 58% were migrants, and ages ranged from 23-53 years with work experience of 5-24 years. Few workers (14%) had no formal schooling and many had secondary level education. Reported physical hazards were high (93%) followed by biological (82%), chemical (77%), ergonomic (71%) and psycho-social (71%) hazards. The majority of physical injuries reported related to slips, falls and cuts (51%), electric shocks (44%), sunburn (41%), dehydration/headaches (40%) and fractures (27%). Approximately 30 to 39% had some chemical injury with skin infections/breathing problems. Indian shrimp farm workers face similar occupational hazards and injuries to shrimp farm workers in other countries. The occupational health and safety of shrimp farm workers should be integrated into the concept of &lsquo;One Health&rsquo; to ensure aquaculture sustainability and safe, meaningful and good quality employment to workers. &nbsp;</p>

MEDDOPROF Silver Standard: Predictions for Occupations, Working Statuses and Activities in Clinical Case Reports

<p><strong>MEDDOPROF Silver Standard</strong></p> <p>This repository contains the <strong>MEDDOPROF Silver Standard</strong>, a collection of clinical case reports of multiple specialties that have been automatically annotated with occupations, working statuses and activities using named entity recognition models trained on the MEDDOPROF corpus. MEDDOPROF and this Silver Standard have been created by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center&#39;s NLP for Biomedical Information Analysis.</p> <p><strong>About the MEDDOPROF Corpus</strong></p> <p><a href="https://temu.bsc.es/meddoprof/">MEDDOPROF</a> is a corpus and shared task focused on the detection and normalization of occupations and related information such as working statuses and non-paid activities in clinical texts in Spanish. All mentions in the corpus have been normalized to SNOMED CT, with occupations also being normalized to the European Skills, Competences, and Occupations classification ESCO. MEDDOPLACE was released as part of the IberLEF 2021 workshop, which in turn was held within the SEPLN 2021 conference.</p> <p><strong>About this Silver Standard</strong></p> <p>The Silver Standard includes 13,357 documents and a total of 5,568,844 tokens. The documents belong to over 10 different medical specialties, including occupational health, oncology, radiology, infectology, dermatology, psichiatry and more.</p> <p>The corpus includes three different labels: PROFESION (occupation), SITUACION-LABORAL (working status) and ACTIVIDAD (activity/hobby). Data from: Integrating multiple sign types to improve occupancy estimation for inconspicuous species

<p><span class="Dummy">Standard occupancy models</span><span class="Dummy"> enable unbiased estimation of occupancy by accounting for observation errors such as missed detections (false negatives) and, less commonly, incorrect detections (false positives). Occupancy models are fitted to data from repeated site visits in which surveyors record evidence of species presence. Use of indirect sign (e.g., scat, tracks) as evidence of presence can vastly improve survey efficiency for inconspicuous species but can also introduce additional sources of error. We developed a "multi‐sign" occupancy approach to model the detection process separately for unique sign types and used this method to improve estimates of occupancy dynamics for an inconspicuous species, the American pika (</span><em><span class="fi">Ochotona princeps</span></em><span class="Dummy">). We investigated how estimates of pika occupancy and environmental drivers differed under four increasingly realistic representations of the observation process: (1) perfect detection (commonly assumed for modeling pika occupancy), (2) standard occupancy model (single observation process without possibility of false detection), (3) multi‐sign with no false detections (non‐false positive model), and (4) multi‐sign with false detections (full model). For the multi‐sign occupancy models, we modeled the detection of each sign type (fresh scat, fresh haypiles, pika calls, and pika sightings) separately as a function of climatic and environmental covariates. Estimates of occupancy processes and inferences about environmental drivers were sensitive to different detection models. Simplified representations of the detection processes generally resulted in higher occupancy estimates and higher turnover rates than the full multi‐sign model. Environmental drivers also varied in their influence on occupancy models, where (e.g.) forb cover was estimated to more strongly influence occupancy in the full multi‐sign model than the simpler models. As has been reported previously in other contexts, unmodeled heterogeneity in the observation process can lead to biases in occupancy processes and uncertainty in the relationships between occupancy and environmental covariates. Overall, our multi‐sign approach to dynamic occupancy modeling, which accounts for spatiotemporal variation in reliability among sign types, has strong potential to generate more realistic estimates of occupancy dynamics for inconspicuous species.</span></p>

Multi‐species occupancy modeling reveals methodological and environmental effects on eDNA detection of amphibians in temporary ponds

<p>Aquatic environmental DNA is increasingly used for biodiversity monitoring, such as surveying threatened and invasive species. Mainstreaming these methods in practical applications, however, still requires significant standardisation and optimisation, namely regarding DNA capture methods. Here we evaluated how filter type (standard disc filters vs high-capacity capsules), number of sampling sites, volume of water filtered and environmental factors affected amphibian detection in Mediterranean temporary ponds. The study involved water filtering until clogging at one (capsules) and five (discs) sites from 16 small and shallow ponds, where three urodele and seven anuran species were recorded through sweep-netting and adult observations. Detection probabilities were estimated from site occupancy models based on replicate sampling and from an adaptation of time-to-detection models relating detection probability to volume of water filtered. Discs filtered relatively small volumes (15–1250 mL), with detection probabilities of the two abundant species (<em>Pelobates</em> <em>cultripes</em>, <em>Hyla</em> <em>meridionalis</em>) increasing rapidly with sample size and water volume, reaching almost perfect detection (0.95) at four and seven discs, and 420 mL and 1860 mL, respectively. However, reaching high detection probabilities for rare species (<em>Pelodytes</em> <em>atlanticus</em>, <em>Pleurodeles</em> <em>waltl</em>, <em>Triturus</em> <em>pygmaeus</em>) would require larger sampling effort than that used in our study. Despite filtering much larger volumes (600–5300 mL), filtering with capsules at a single site per pond provided lower detection probabilities for abundant species than filtering with discs at five sites. Rarer species showed no difference between methods, which may be due to small sample sizes and reduced statistical power for species with few detection. The effect of conductivity on species detectability was largely negative, while the influence of water clarity varied across species, and pH had no effects. Overall, our results suggest that eDNA amphibian surveys in Mediterranean temporary ponds need to consider filter clogging, heterogeneous DNA distribution, and highly conductive waters.</p>

Data from: Using camera traps to estimate habitat preferences and occupancy patterns of vertebrates in boreal wetlands

<p><span>Wetlands are a critical habitat for boreal mammals and birds that rely on them for breeding, foraging, and resting. However, wetlands in boreal regions are increasingly experiencing natural and human pressures. These impacts can lead to a reduction in the availability of wetland habitats </span><span>for boreal mammals and birds that rely on wetlands for breeding, foraging, and resting. To inform management and conservation, camera traps provide an opportunity to survey mammals and birds to investigate their habitat preferences. We aimed to evaluate the effect of habitat features on the occupancy of mammals and birds in boreal wetlands. We used a multispecies occupancy model to estimate the habitat associations of 11 mammals and 45 avian species detected at 50 sampling ponds </span><span>during the summers of 2018 and 2019 </span><span>in Northern Quebec. Our results indicate that certain mammals, such as Red Fox and River Otters, and birds including </span>the American Pipit, Common Raven, Hooded Merganser, and Greater Yellowlegs <span>showed a preference for peatland ponds, whereas the </span>Common Grackle preferred <span>beaver ponds. We found few effects of distance to roads, and no effect of amount of forest cover on species occupancy. The occupancy of 27% of mammals and 24% of birds decreased with increasing latitude. These findings offer valuable insights for informing conservation initiatives focused on the preservation of wetlands in northern Quebec. By discerning the specific types of ponds preferred by each species, conservationists can strategically ensure the preservation and proper management of these habitats, thereby enhancing their conservation efforts.</span></p>

Indoor Air Temperature and Occupant Behavior in Classroom of higher education building in Mediterranean climate

<p>Data collection Include the measurement of indoor and outdoor environmental parameters (air temperature and relative humidity) and occupant interactions with building systems (window and door status: open/closed, blind state, and thermostat/air-conditioning adjustment).</p><p>The outdoor air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed were collected as potential control variables to indicate different outdoor conditions.</p><p>The indoor air temperature and relative humidity in the classroom were monitored using wireless sensors. Six RHT sensors were placed at different locations: one in the center (F98), two on the ceiling next to grilles (FA1 et F9B), one on the carpentry of one of the windows (F9D), one near the writing board (F94), and one in the corridor outside the classroom (F96). Indoor parameters were recorded at ten minutes intervals.</p><p>The number of occupants was determined hourly (morning and afternoon) by counting and surveying (attendance sheets). The usage schedules of the classroom were 8:30–18:00. The number of occupants varied from 0 to 31.</p><p>The states of doors and windows (open or close) were monitored using magnetic sensor that detects the opening of doors and windows. The states of the door and windows were recorded at ten minute intervals.</p><p>The window-blind closing rate was determined by visual observation. The closing rates were 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Observations were conducted throughout the day in the morning and afternoon at 1 h intervals.</p><p>The state of the heating/air-conditioning system was determined to be off or on every hour (in the morning and afternoon) using the HVAC control panel (HMI)</p>

Caterpillar Occupation Collection Box

In January 1987 workers at the Caterpillar plant in Uddingston tried to save 1,200 jobs through an action that came to symbolise the cruel de-industrialisation of Scotland. After a promised £62.5 million investment was withdrawn, the workers barricaded themselves inside the factory for 103 days, eventually winning a guarantee of no immediate redundancies. However, despite the efforts of the workers to find a buyer for the plant it was closed in November of that year. This collecting box was used to raise money to support the Caterpillar workers during the occupation and is currently in the collection administered by [CultureNL Museums ](http://culturenl.co.uk/summerlee/).
