A scoping review of patient safety research carried out in the Republic of Ireland [dataset]

<p>This is an example&nbsp;search strategy (supplemental materials 1) and the charting form data (supplemental materials 2)&nbsp;from each of the 31 included papers included in the scoping research.</p> <p><strong>Background.</strong> Maintaining the highest levels of patient safety is a priority of healthcare organisations. However, although considerable resources are invested in improving safety, patients still suffer avoidable harm.</p> <p><strong>Aims.</strong> (1) To examine the extent, range, and nature of patient safety research activities carried out in the RoI; (2) make recommendations for future research; and (3) consider how these recommendations align with the Health Service Executive&rsquo;s (HSE) patient safety strategy.</p> <p><strong>Methods.</strong> A five-stage scoping review methodology was used to synthesise the published research literature on patient safety carried out in the RoI: (1) identify the research question; (2) identify relevant studies; (3) study selection; (4) chart the data; and (5) collate, summarising, and reporting the results.&nbsp; Electronic searches were conducted across five electronic databases.</p> <p><strong>Results.</strong> A total of 31 papers met the inclusion criteria. Of the 24 papers concerned with measuring and monitoring safety, 12 (50%) assessed past harm, 4 (16.7%) the reliability of safety systems, 4 (16.7%) sensitivity to operations, 9 (37.5%) anticipation and preparedness, and 2 (8.3%) integration and learning. Of the six intervention papers, three (50%) were concerned with education and training, two (33.3%) with simplification and standardisation, and one (16.7%) with checklists. One paper was concerned with identifying potential safety interventions.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions.</strong> There is a modest, but growing, body of patient safety research conducted in the RoI. It is hoped that this review will provide direction to researchers, healthcare practitioners, and health service managers, in how to build upon existing research in order to improve patient safety.</p>

Factors related to the implementation of patient safety culture in prehospital emergency services

<p><span>Background</span><span>: Prehospital emergency services are one of the main areas of health care, which provide emergency services for patients who experience acute, critical illness or injury outside the hospital. Prehospital services are more often carried out by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team, as one of the health service providers who come to the scene more quickly, both in daily emergencies.</span></p> <p><span>Purpose</span><span>: </span><span>This study aims to determine the factors related to the application of patient safety culture and determine the most dominant factors in the application of patient safety culture at </span><span>the prehospital emergency service in Bantaeng.</span></p> <p><span>Results:</span><span> The results showed that all domains of patient safety culture had a significant effect (p&lt;0.05) namely teamwork 0.000, safety climate 0.000, management perception and support 0.000, job satisfaction 0.019, work environment 0.000 and stress recognition 0.000. The most influential domain is stress recognition 1.116 and Adjust R Square value of 69.7%.</span></p> <p><span>Conclusion:</span><span> Patient safety needs to be a priority in handling and organizations must continue to evaluate the application of patient safety culture in PSC 119 setting in Bantaeng. Nurses are responsible for improving services that prioritize patient safety by understanding all factors related to the implementation of patient safety culture.</span></p>

Safety of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination in patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis

<p>This dataset was the minimal dataset of the research article entitle 'Safety of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination in patients  with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis'.  The study aims to investigate the localized and systemic adverse effects (AEs) within 30-days after the first dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV19 (Oxford-AstraZeneca) vaccination in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients receiving hemodialysis (HD). The first dataset is the raw data for logistic regression analyses examining the risk factors in association with AEs, another dataset  contains the second- and the seventh- day incidences of various AEs depicted in bar graphs. It comprises variables recording the status of patient-reported local and systemic AEs in questionnaire on the second and seventh days after vaccination as well as patients' baseline demographic and clinical characteristics.</p>

Raw Data for the article: COVID-19 safety measures at the Radiology Unit of a Transplant Institute: the non-COVID-19 patient's confidence with safety procedures

<p><strong>Purpose:&nbsp;</strong>To support the wellbeing of both patients and their families, our aim was to investigate the satisfaction of non-COVID in- and out-patients regarding safety measures implemented at our radiology unit of a transplant institute against COVID infection.</p> <p><strong>Materials and methods:&nbsp;</strong>Over a five-month period, adult patients&#39; feedback was obtained by a questionnaire on the fear of contracting COVID-19 during a radiology examination, the perceived delay in treatment, and the following safety measures implemented: modified schedules to limit the number of patients in the waiting area and to maximize social distancing; assistance by staff when visitors were not admitted; cleaning and disinfection of machines; mask wearing and hand hygiene of staff; and staff advice on hand hygiene and infection control precautions.</p> <p><strong>Results:&nbsp;</strong>Over a five-month period, our preliminary results (387 patients) showed general patient satisfaction (99.1%) with safety measures applied at our radiology unit. Patients were satisfied with distancing and assistance by staff (100%), cleaning and disinfection (91%), mask wearing and hand hygiene of the staff (97%), and staff advice (94%). There was some criticism of the perceived delay in treatment (7.3%) and in the scheduling of the waiting list (5.4%), with 5.4% fearing contracting the virus. Patients&#39; awareness of safety measures and confidence in the hospital preparedness policy was perceived by all interviewers, and 100% appreciated being questioned.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:&nbsp;</strong>The feedback given by the non-COVID patient helps to measure the quality in health care, to improve the quality service, and to protect and satisfy more vulnerable patients, also during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

The effectiveness and safety of intensive lipid-lowering with different Rosuvastatin-based regimens in patients at high risk: A nonblind, randomized, controlled trial

<p><span><strong>Background</strong>:</span> <span>Statin alone or nonstatins as add-ons have been introduced to intensive low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) </span><span>lowering</span><span> therapy in patients at high cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different statin-based regimens for patients at high risk</span><span>.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>:</span> <span>Three hundred patients at high CVD risk were randomly assigned to the statin group</span><span> (Rosuvastatin 20mg/d</span><span>), statin_EZ group</span> <span>(Rosuvastatin 10mg/d + ezetimibe </span><span>10mg/d</span><span>),  statin_pcsk group (Rosuvastatin </span><span>10mg/d</span><span> + alirocumab </span><span>75mg/2</span><span>weeks) or combine3 group (Rosuvastatin 10mg/d + ezetimibe 10mg/d + alirocumab 75mg/2weeks)</span><span>.</span> <span>The primary outcome measure was cholesterol levels </span><span>(LDL-C, total cholesterol (TC) triglycerides (TGs), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C))</span><span> after 24</span><span> weeks of</span><span> follow-up. The secondary outcome measures were safety markers and the proportion of patients who achieved the &lt; 70 mg/dL (1.8 mmol/L) LDL-C target. </span><span>A logistic</span><span> regression model was performed to explore the factors affecting lipid target achievement.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>:</span> <span>The TC and LDL-C levels after treatment were significantly different among the four groups</span> <span>(p &lt; 0.05). The levels in both the combine3 group and </span><span>the </span><span>statin_pcsk9 group were significantly lower than </span><span>those in </span><span>the statin group and the statin_EZ group (</span><span>p &lt; 0.05</span><span>), but there was no significant difference between</span><span> the</span><span> combine3 group and </span><span>the </span><span>statin_pcsk9 group. The incidence of adverse events in the four groups was low.</span><span> Body mass index (BMI) and hypertensive status were related to target achievement.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong>:</span><span> The combination of a statin</span><span> and a PCSK9 inhibitor was safe and more effective for the treatment of high-risk CVD patients, while the addition of </span><span>ezetimibe was</span><span> unable to significantly lower lipid levels any further. The rate of achieving </span><span>the </span><span>target was higher in patients </span><span>with</span><span> hypertension and a low BMI.</span></p>
