"Play by Play": a dataset of handball and basketball game situations in a standardized space

<p>Synthetic dataset of labeled game situations present in recordings of federated handball and basketball matches played in Galicia, Spain. The dataset consists of synthetic data generated from real video frames, including 308,805 labeled handball frames and 56,578 labeled basketball frames extracted from 2,105 handball and 383 basketball 5-second video clips.</p> <p>For each frame, the dataset includes player positions and directions (x, y, vx, vy), and ball position (referees are also considered as players, we do not distinguish teams or players from referees). For each tuple there is an associated game situation: right/left attack, right/left counterattack, right/left penalty and time out.</p>

Data from: Species pool functional diversity plays a hidden role in generating β-diversity

Functional trait diversity is used as a way to infer mechanistic processes that drive community assembly. While functional diversity within communities is often viewed as a response variable, here we present and test a framework for how functional diversity among taxa in the regional species pool drive the assembly of communities among habitats. We predicted that species pool functional diversity should work with environmental heterogeneity to drive β-diversity. We tested these predictions by modeling empirical patterns in invertebrate communities from 570 streams in 52 watersheds. Our analysis of the field data provided strong support for the inclusion of both functional diversity and environmental heterogeneity in the models, and our predictions were supported when the community was analyzed all together. However, analyses within individual functional feeding guilds revealed strong context dependency in the relative importance of functional diversity, γ-richness, and environmental heterogeneity on β-diversity. We interpret the results to mean that functional diversity can play an important role in driving β-diversity; however, within guilds the nature of interspecific interactions and species pool size complicate the relationship. Future research should test this conceptual model across different ecosystems and in experimental settings using metacommunity mecocosms to enhance our understanding the role that functional variation plays in generating spatial biodiversity patterns.

FTICR-MS Dataset for 'Playing with FiRE: A genome resolved view of the soil microbiome responses to high severity forest wildfire'

<p>This dataset is the raw data for FTICR-MS used in Nelson et al.: &#39;Playing with FiRE: A genome resolved view of the soil microbiome responses to high severity forest wildfire&#39;. The files correspond to the raw spectral files for each sample and can be opened with Bruker data analysis software. The numbers correspond to sample number (See Supplementary Data 1 in publication for sample metadata) and the r1 and r2 identifiers indicate if there were replicates of that sample.</p>

Changes in body surface temperature play an under-appreciated role in the avian immune response

<p>Fever and hypothermia are well characterized components of systemic inflammation. However, our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying such changes in body temperature is largely limited to rodent models and other mammalian species. In mammals, high dosages of an inflammatory agent (e.g., lipopolysaccharide, LPS) typically leads to hypothermia (decrease in body temperature below normothermic levels), which is largely driven by a reduction in thermogenesis, and not changes in peripheral vasomotion (i.e., changes in blood vessel tone). In birds, however, hypothermia occurs frequently, even at lower dosages, but the thermoeffector mechanisms associated with the response remain unknown. We immune-challenged zebra finches (<i>Taeniopygia guttata</i>) with LPS and monitored changes in subcutaneous temperature and energy balance (i.e., body mass, food intake), and assessed surface temperatures of, and heat loss across, the eye region, bill, and legs. We hypothesized that if birds employ similar thermoregulatory mechanisms to similarly-sized mammals, LPS-injected individuals would reduce subcutaneous body temperature and maintain constant surface temperatures when compared with saline-injected individuals. Instead, LPS-injected individuals showed a slight elevation in body temperature, and this response coincided with a reduction in peripheral heat loss, particularly across the legs, as opposed to changes in energy balance. However, we note that our interpretations should be taken with caution due to small sample sizes within each treatment. We suggest that peripheral vasomotion, allowing for heat retention, is an underappreciated component of the sickness-induced thermoregulatory response of small birds.</p>
