Precipitation record from Old Headquarters, Black Rock Forest, Cornwall, NY 1960 - 2025

Black Rock Forest has been measuring precipitation using an aluminum bucket gauge since 1960. Total rainfall is measured after each event to the nearest hundredth of an inch. Snow depth is measured adjacent to the bucket and snow in the collection bucket is melted to determine the snow water equivalent. The gauge is located in a meadow at 129 Continental Road, Cornwall, New York.

History of Acid Precipitation on the Shawangunk Ridge: Mohonk Preserve Precipitation Depths and pH, 1976 to Present

We, the staff, volunteers and associates of the Mohonk Preserve, have been collecting precipitation data at Mohonk Lake since January 1976. The Level1_MohonkPrecipData includes precipitation depths recorded either during or at the conclusion of every precipitation event. This dataset additionally includes pH measurements for most precipitation collections.The Level2_MohonkPrecipData summarizes data collections into precipitation events where the precipitation depth is cumulative and the pH is averaged for all data collections in that event. We measured precipitation via a National Weather Service Rain Gauge and the pH was measured at a Cooperative Weather Service Station at Mohonk Lake.

Marcell Experimental Forest event based precipitation chemistry, 2008 - ongoing

This data set reports the event-based chemistry of precipitation water that was collected at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. The data come from sites in two research catchments instrumented for hydrologic monitoring - the meteorological station located in an upland clearing in the S2 research catchment and the S1 bog as part of the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment. Sample collection and analyses started during June of 2008 at the S2 site and is ongoing. Sample collection and analyses started during December of 2013 at the SPRUCE S1 sites and will continue for the duration of the experiment. The MEF is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. The SPRUCE experiment is a multi-year cooperative project among scientists of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory operated by UT-Battelle, LLC and the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. The SPRUCE experiment is funded by the US Department of Energy, Biological and Environmental Research Program.

Average monthly and annual precipitation spatial grids. (1971-2000 and 1980-1989), Andrews Experimental Forest

These files are spatially gridded precipitation of average monthly and annual precipitation for the climatological periods 1971-2000 and 1980-89, Andrews Experimental Forest. The original 1980-89 grids were updated for a greater time span and also the extent of the coverage is increased. Interpolation of point station measurements to a spatial grid was done using the PRISM model, developed by Christopher Daly of the PRISM Group at Oregon State University. PRISM interpolation accounts for the effects of elevation on the spatial patterns of precipitation. Grid resolution is 100 meters. Station data used in the interpolation were obtained from current and historic rain gauge stations within the forest. These grids represent the first significant effort to map climatological precipitation in the Andrews Forest. Further information on PRISM can be found at http://prism.oregonstate.edu/

Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Precipitation measurements at eight stations

Abstract: Rain depth is collected using model 6011-A tipping bucket rain gauges manufactured by All Weather Inc. (formerly Qualimetrics). Two raingauges (RG1 and RG2) are installed at each of eight stations. Each rain gauge tip represents a depth of 0.01 inches of rainfall. Data are recorded by a data logger at the station and telemetered hourly to UMBC, where the data are stored in a data base. The rain gauges are not heated and therefore snow and ice storms are removed from the published record. The QA/QC procedure applied to the raw data includes removal of false tips and snow/ice events, accumulating tip data to a time series in inches/min, applying a laboratory-based calibration curve to the data, and converting corrected data to a one-minute time series in units of mm/min for publication.

Air Temperature, Soil Temperature, Precipitation, Snow Depth at Long Term Tree Growth Sites; 1968-Present : Weekly

Part of the Long Term Tree Growth study. This dataset is an accumulation of various manual measurements made on a weekly to monthly basis. It originally included snow stakes, rain buckets, max/min thermometers and a series of soil temperature sensors. Over the years equipment has changed. The soil temperature sensors exceeded their field life during the 1990's and were dropped from the study. In 2001 logging air temperature and relative humidity sensors were installed and those measurements were discontinued. In 2002 logging rain gauges were installed to replace the manual buckets. Both styles were during that growing season and the manual buckets were removed before the 2003 field season. All that remains active in this dataset are the snow stake measurements.

Vegetation influences desert soil arthropods and their response to altered precipitation

Altered size and frequency of precipitation pulses will influence both plant and soil communities in water-limited systems such as the Sonoran Desert. Little is known about the response of desert soil fauna communities, particularly the mesofauna that are important components of the detrital food web. Further, while there is a well-documented impact of vegetation on soil fauna communities, the role of vegetation in buffering the soil community against such environmental changes is unclear. We conducted a short-term field study to (1) assess how the amount and frequency of monsoon season precipitation pulses influence soil arthropod communities and (2) explore the role of plant-soil linkages in the response of soil arthropod communities to altered precipitation. We experimentally altered the size (ambient and 50% increase) and frequency (ambient and 2X reduced frequency) of monsoon season precipitation for two dominant shrubs representing distinctly different functional types, as well as interplant spaces. We measured the resulting soil arthropod abundance, diversity, and composition, as well as key soil properties to characterize the soil habitat beneath each vegetation type.

Soil respiration and precipitation data at resin bag sites on canopy gradient sites at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in 1998 (dataset 1056)

We tested whether inputs from canopy herbivores would affect soil processes such as respiration, nutrient cycling, and decomposition along an elevation gradient. The five treatments we used were frass additions, throughfall additions, removal of all litter that fell during the study, removal of greenfall that fell during the study, and controls. Soil respiration was significantly reduced on low and mid elevation sites in litter exclusion, greenfall exclusion and throughfall addition treatments (from 0.846 g CO2/m2/h for controls to 0.618, 0.667, and 0.708 g CO2/m2/h, respectively, for the three treatments).

Precipitation from the Taylor Slough, just outside Everglades National Park (FCE), South Florida from August 2000 to December 2006

Rain level is recorded at least every thirty minutes at TS/Ph4 and TS/Ph5 (data since 2000). Rain level data are collected using ISCO rain level gages attached to ISCO autosamplers, which also act as dataloggers. We condense these data into daily cumulative rainfall, although hourly rain level data are also available.

The data file included here reports 1-second (1997-2016) or 1-minute (2016-present) frequency precipitation data, in millimeters, from this rain gauge during precipitation events. There are no data records for rain amounts less than 0.1 mm. Plant cover under precipitation and nitrogen manipulation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2006-2008

This data package contains plot cover data from a precipitation and nitrogen manipulation experiment conducted on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2006-2008. The objective of the study was to understand the interaction of precipitation and nitrogen fertilization on aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) legacies. Rain-out shelters or supplemental irrigation were used to create 5 levels of precipitation: -80% and -50% reduced, ambient control, and +50% and +80% increased PPT. Half of the plots were randomly assigned to receive ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Plant cover was sampled with a line intercept method in fall 2006 before any treatments began, then again in fall 2007 and 2008 after treatments had been applied. Daily precipitation from a network of weighing rain gauges on the Jornada Experimental Range (Jornada Basin LTER), 1976-2011.

This completed dataset contains daily precipitation measurements from a network of weighing rain gauges (Belfort Universal Precipitation Gauges, Series 5-780) at 58 locations on the Jornada Experimental Range in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA between January 1976 and December 2011. Locations and the dates during which data were collected were generally project-oriented. Temporal coverage per location is quite variable and ranges between 1,647 and 13,024 days. The network was maintained by USDA Agricultural Research Service personnel. After 2011 the remaining weighing rain gauges were replaced by tipping bucket gauges and those data are available separately.

Pre-dawn water potential of leaves from reduced and enhanced precipitation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2008

This data package contains pre-dawn water potential data for leaves collected from mesquite shrubs and black grama grasses at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2007-2008. The purpose of this study was to quantify ecophysiological performance of shrubs and grasses in the context of precipitation manipulations. One mesquite and one black grama leaf from each plot (n = 20 plots; 5 PPT treatments X 4 replicate plots/treatment) were measured 5 times beginning July 2007 and ending in August 2008. The precipitation treatments consisted of +/-80%, +/-50%, and ambient/control. Leaves were excised from plants and immediately measured for water potential (MPa) with a pressure chamber at least 0.5 h before dawn. The data set is complete.
