Quality of life in chronic pain treated through pulsed radiofrequency therapy: A retrospective study

<p>Anxiety and depression are often symptoms present in people who suffer from chronic pain, compromising the quality of life of these individuals. The objective of this study was to assess whether a pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) treatment, in addition to psychological support intervention, can decrease chronic pain, thereby improving quality of life and restoring psychological well-being.Fifty outpatients with a diagnosis of chronic pain, without any benefit from traditional drug therapies, were selected to perform a PRF treatment in combination with a psychological intervention. They were evaluated before and after the intervention through the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory-II for anxiety and depression symptomatology, respectively, the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36) was used to assess the subject&#39;s quality of life, and the Numerical Rating Scale was used for pain assessment.The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a significant difference in Beck Depression Inventory-II (P &lt; .001), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (P &lt; .01), and Numerical Rating Scale (P = .004). In the SF-36 scores, we observed a significant difference between T0 and T1 in both mental (P &lt; .001) and physical (P &lt; .001) dimensions.This study shows that a chronic pain reduction leads to a decrease of anxiety-depressive symptoms and an improvement in quality of life. PRF seems to be an appropriate method to reduce the chronic pain that influences psychological well-being and quality of life.</p>

Chipmunk body mass variations and life-histories in a pulsed resource ecosystem

<p><span>Phenotypic plasticity is the most immediate mechanism of adaptative response to environmental change. Studying plastic changes in response to fluctuating environments provides insights into how such adjustments may impact life-history traits. Here, we used a 14-year dataset of repeated body mass measurements in male eastern chipmunks (<em>Tamias striatus</em>) to assess the extent of plastic changes for this trait in a resource pulse ecosystem. We first determined the magnitude of variation in body mass at the population level in response to the drastic change in food resource availability from American beech tree seeds (<em>Fagus grandifolia</em>). Males that emerged in the spring from winter torpor following a non-mast year had a lower body mass than males emerging after a mast year, but they tended to recover this loss by mid-June. We found significant among-individual variation in spring body mass plasticity (i.e., individual by environment interaction, I x E). We then investigated the relationships between individual spring body mass plasticity, longevity and lifetime reproductive success. Interestingly, heavier males lived longer than lighter males, but more plastic males had a lower longevity and lower lifetime reproductive success than less plastic males. The report of such plastic response in a stochastic resource system provides valuable insights into the interplay between the costs and benefits of phenotypic plasticity as an adaptation to environmental fluctuations.</span></p>

Automated Remote Pulse Oximetry System (ARPOS)

<p>The Automated Remote Pulse Oximetry dataset consists of colour and IR (infrared) images and distance from camera taken from forty (40) participants. The data consists of regions of interest (ROIs) such as the forehead, cheeks and lips. Participant data has been collected from a real-life environment that is their homes, rather than within a lab setting, as the study was conducted during the covid-19 pandemic. The participants downloaded the ARPOS app developed to acquire participant face data for the research study. Data collected presents various factors such as different illumination within a home environment, different skin pigmentations, genders, age groups and participants with beards. One participant (PIS-3252) also has a nude colour lipstick on. The data was collected to test the hypothesis that heart rate and blood oxygen can be measured remotely using a camera-based system. The ground truth was collected using a commercial pulse oximeter device (Wellue). Alternatively, a few participants used the apple watch series 6 to acquire ground truth data. Different FPS has been collected for participants due to various computing hardware and its processing power.&nbsp;</p> <p>The ground truth vital data (heart rate and blood oxygen)&nbsp;.txt files are aligned with image time frames. ROI images are named as timestamps, i.e., each ROI is acquired for a timestamp. The image name is formatted as &#39;cropped-&#39; + Hour + &#39;-&#39; + Minutes + &#39;-&#39; + Second + &#39;-&#39; + MilliSecond. For example, cropped-0-42-11-427. The data collected for each participant is in two resting states (Resting1, Resting2) and one active state (After Exercise).</p>

The main objectives of this study on the tidal Merrimack River plume are (1) quantify the net influence of straining, advection, and mixing on tidal plume stratification under realistic winds and (2) evaluate the mechanisms responsible for variability in mixing within the near and midfield plume regions over multiple tidal pulses under differing winds. A&nbsp;numerical modeling approach is taken. Data are from the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) results for the study area. Files are in MATLAB data format and are named FigXX_data. mat. Variable names and units correspond to graphed data of each figure in the journal article.</p>

Willingness to replace animal-based products with pulses among consumers in different European countries

<p>The growing world population and increased meat consumption pose a challenge for current food production systems. While pulses present a promising position in terms of low impacts in primary production and high nutritional quality, it is unclear whether consumers are willing to consume pulses instead of meat. Based on an online survey answered by 4,322 respondents across five European countries, this study examined consumers&rsquo;&nbsp;willingness to utilize pulses as a plant-based alternative to animal-based products. More than a third of pulse consumers (42%) were, to some extent, already using pulses as an alternative to animal-based foods. Beef was noted as the most frequently replaced type of food, mainly driven by arguments relating to health, environment, and sustainability, especially relevant for German and Danish consumers. Respondents who did not indicate a current replacement of animal-based foods stated a relatively low willingness to change in the future (40%). German pulse consumers were likely to be part of the low willingness segment. In contrast, Polish consumers possessed a relatively higher incidence of using pulses instead of meat, especially pork and poultry. Respondents with a low replacement willingness indicated a high importance of future pulse-based products to be natural, while respondents already using pulses instead of animal-based foods expected convenient and minimally processed foods. Respondents, who already replaced meat with pulses or expressed a low future willingness, stated to prefer plain pulses over processed pulse-based products,&nbsp;and meat-resembling forms considering the former segment,&nbsp;alternatively to meat. These preferences and expectations should be considered for future product development, especially if aiming to attract unwilling consumers to shift to pulse-based foods.</p>

Meridional composite pulses for low-field magnetic resonance

<p>We discuss procedures for error-tolerant spin control in environments that permit transient, large-angle reorientation of magnetic bias field. Short sequences of non-resonant magnetic field pulses in a laboratory-frame meridional plane are derived. These are shown to have band-pass excitation properties comparable to established amplitude-modulated, resonant pulses used in high, static-field magnetic resonance. Using these meridional pulses, we demonstrate robust z inversion in proton (<sup>1</sup>H) nuclear magnetic resonance near Earth&rsquo;s field.</p>

Temporal FEL Pulse Shaping and Diagnostics at SwissFEL with Tilted Electron Beams

<p>Data for all results shown in my Dissertation.<br>It is a large file archive with simulation and measurement data. Furthermore, almost all analysis scripts are included. The only analysis software missing is the photon spectrum spike analysis, which was written by Adrian Rutschmann.</p> <p>The archive also includes the tex files and a Makefile. From the information (starting from main.tex) one can find the analysis scripts that correspond to each plot.</p> <p>The data was also used for the conference contribution MOP51 to the FEL conference 2022 (fel2022.org).</p>

Full-waveform pulsed LiDAR dataset

<p>A dataset comprised of full-waveform (periodically sampled)&nbsp;pulses emulating LiDAR signals is provided. The waveforms were&nbsp;captured at a sampling rate of 20 Gsample/s and over a dynamic range of 45 dB. Data from: Aquatic ecosystem responds differently to press and pulse nutrient disturbances as revealed by a microcosm experiment

<p><span>Due to climate change and increasing anthropogenic activities, lakes are disturbed frequently, usually by press (e.g., diffused pollution, rising temperatures) or pulse (e.g., storms, rainfall, pollution events) disturbances. Both press and pulse disturbances can affect abiotic and biotic environments, changing the structure of ecosystems and affecting ecosystem services. To confront with the effects of climate change and increasing anthropogenic activities, understanding the different effects of press and pulse disturbances on lake ecosystems is essential. This study assessed the effect of press and pulse disturbances of phosphorus on a microcosmic </span><span>aquatic </span><span>eco</span><span>system</span><span> by measuring the total phosphorus (TP), algae density, and physiological indicators of submerged macrophytes. We found that the microcosmic aquatic ecosystem responded differently to press and pulse disturbances. Our results suggested that it had a lower resistance to pulse phosphorus disturbances than to press phosphorus disturbances. There were significantly higher nutrient concentrations and algal densities in the pulse treatment than in the press treatment. Positive feedback was found between the biomass of submerged macrophytes and the water quality. There was a higher submerged macrophytes biomass at low TP concentration and algal density. In the context of climate change, press and pulse disturbances could have severe impacts on lake ecosystems. Our findings will provide some insight for further research and lake management.</span></p>

Robustness assessment via simulation-based fault injection of the implementation level models of the LEON3, MC8051, and PIC microcontrollers in presence of stuck-at, bit-flip, pulse, and delay fault models

<p>This dataset package contains the results of fault injection experiments for RTL and implementation-level models 3 microprocessors (LEON3, MC8051, PIC).</p> <p><strong>    1.    Package contents:</strong><br>     - raw traces of fault injection experiments: *.lst files<br>     - analysis results grouped by fault models: *.html files in the /REPORT subfolders<br>     - summary for each targeted HDL model and fault model: index.html in each design folder</p> <p>To facilitate the navigation through the contents, it is organized as a tree of *.html pages. The root page is 'index.html' in the archive root.<br> Additionally, to observe the raw traces for each experiment in the convenient form, the *.lst files are processed on the fly by custom python-script, returning the interactive *.html page. Each observation trace is a table, where: <br>     - each row represents an observation vector, comprising {simulation time stamp}, {flags}, {internal state}, {outputs}.<br>     - each cell is highlighted:<br>         a) green if matches with reference trace (fault-free simulation),<br>         b) red   if mismatches with reference trace, denoting error for internals / failure for outputs,<br>         c) violet in case of vector whose timestamp was not in reference (unexpected transition).<br>         These highlighting options can be customized by modifying the linked *.css files.</p> <p>        <br> <strong>        2. Effect Of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field And Microwave Therapy On Pain And Physical Function In Older Adults With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

<p><strong><span>Background and purpose:</span></strong><span>&nbsp;</span><span>Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy and microwaves (MW) are two electrotherapy modalities that have shown to improve pain and function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these therapies is controversial due to diversity in the application parameters and treatment protocols in these patients. The objective is to compare the effectiveness of active PEMF versus MW, as well as sham PEMF, in addressing pain and improving functionality for treating KOA.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong><span> </span><span>Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial. Participants diagnosed with KOA were assigned to an intervention combining an exercise program with active PEMF, MW, or sham PEMF, delivered in three weekly sessions over four weeks. The main outcomes were pain, reported on a 0&ndash;10 cm visual analogue scale (VAS), and functionality, as evaluated with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis (WOMAC) questionnaire, and the Timed Up and Go test. The outcomes were measured at pre-intervention, immediately post-intervention, and one and four months after the intervention.</span></p>
