A mixed-methods study conducted by EURIPA.</span></strong></p> <p><strong><span>Abstract</span></strong></p> <p><strong><span>Background</span></strong></p> <p><span>The role of primary care during a pandemic varies across European countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the working practices of family medicine doctors. It has also impacted the resilience of health systems.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong><span> </span></p> <p><span>This study aimed to examine European health system responses to the pandemic, focusing on rural and urban differences.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Material and methods</span></strong></p> <p><span>This cross-sectional, mixed-methods study used a semi-structured online questionnaire with 68 questions, including 21 free-text comments. Data were collected from May 2020 to January 2021. Key informants from sixteen EURIPA member countries distributed questionnaires to 406 primary care doctors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests (Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U) with a significance threshold of 0.05. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p><span>A statistically significant difference was found between rural (36.4%, 55/151), semirural (19.4%, 24/124), and urban populations (29.8%, 39/131) regarding medicine shortages (&chi;&sup2; = 9.91, df = 4, p = 0.042). <span>&nbsp;</span>The semirural one proved to have a statistically significant difference with the other settings(chi-square post-hoc test, p = 0.004 in post-hoc chi-square test). Significant differences were found between countries in resilience features including, Effectiveness of triage, Adapting to the rapidly changing requirements, Government help, Existence of a community resilience group, Improved interprofessional collaboration, Medicine Shortage and GPs involved in palliative care.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong></p> <p><span>Medicine shortage was more prevalent in rural and urban areas compared to semirural ones. Differences were observed between countries in their responses to the pandemic, particularly in Adapting to the rapidly changing requirements, Effectiveness of triage, Government help, Existence of a Community resilience group. Qualitative analysis confirmed these disparities.</span></p> <p><span>The results emphasize the need for tailored approaches considering diverse contexts in shaping effective health system resilience.</span></p>

Forest resilience to global warming is strongly modulated by local-scale topographic, microclimatic and biotic conditions

<p>Resilience of endangered rear edge populations of cold-adapted forests in the Mediterranean basin is increasingly altered by extreme heatwave and drought pressures. It remains unknown, however, whether microclimatic variation in these isolated forests could ultimately result in large intra-population variability in the demographic responses, allowing the coexistence of contrasting declining and resilient trends across small topographic gradients. Multiple key drivers promoting spatial variability in the resilience of rear edge forests remain largely unassessed, including amplified and buffered thermal exposure induced by heat waves along topographic gradients, and increased herbivory pressure on tree saplings in defaunated areas lacking efficient apex predators. Here we analysed whether indicators of forest resilience to global warming are strongly modulated by local-scale topographic, microclimatic and biotic conditions.</p> <p>We studied a protected rear edge forest of sessile oak (<em>Q. petraea</em>), applying a suite of 20 indicators of resilience of tree secondary growth, including multidecadal and short-term indices. We also analysed sapling recruitment success, recruit/adult ratios and sapling thermal exposure across topographic gradients. We found large within population variation in secondary growth resilience, in recruitment success and in thermal exposure of tree saplings to heatwaves, and this variability was spatially structured along small-scale topographical gradients. Multidecadal resilience indices and curves provide useful descriptors of forest vulnerability to climate warming, complementing assessments based in the analysis of short-term resilience indicators. Species-specific associations of trees with microclimatic variability are reported.</p> <p>Biotic factors are key in determining long-term resilience in climatically-stressed rear edge forests, with strong limitation of sapling recruitment by increased roe deer and wild boar herbivory. Our results also support non-stationary effects of climate determining forest growth responses and resilience, showing increased negative effects of warming and drought over the last decades in declining stands.</p> <p>Our findings do not support scenarios predicting spatially homogeneous distributional shifts and limited resilience in rear-edge populations, and are more supportive of scenarios including spatially heterogeneous responses, characterised with contrasting intra-population trends of forest resilience. We conclude that forest resilience responses to climate warming are strongly modulated by local-scale microclimatic, topographic and biotic factors. Accurate predictions of forest responses to changes in climate would therefore largely benefit from the integration of local-scale abiotic and biotic factors.</p>

Resilient rivers and connected marine systems: a review of mutual sustainability opportunities

<p>Associated data used in the following review paper (under review) - Resilient rivers and connected marine systems: a review of mutual sustainability opportunities. Abstract: The United Nations initiated the sustainable development goals (SDGs) to produce &quot;a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.&quot; Established in 2015, progress of SDGs directed at the aquatic environment is slow despite an encroaching 2030 deadline. The modification of flow regimes combined with other anthropogenic pressures underpin ecological impacts across aquatic ecosystems. Current SDG 14 targets (Life Below Water) do not incorporate the interrelationships of rivers and marine systems systematically, nor do they provide recommendations on how to improve existing management and policy in a comprehensive manner. Therefore, this review aims to illustrate the linkages between rivers and marine ecosystems concerning the SDG 14 targets and to illustrate land to sea based strategies to reach sustainability goals. We provide an applied case study to show how opportunities can be explored. We review three major areas where mutual opportunities are present: 1) rivers contribute to marine and estuary ecosystem resilience (targets 14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.5); (2) resilient rivers are part of the global fisheries sustainability concerns (targets&nbsp; 14.4, 14.6, 14.7, 14.B); and (3) enhancing marine policy and research from a river and environmental flows perspective (targets 14.A, 14.C). New indicators of ecological resilience and invasion resistance to support prioritization and management in the sagebrush biome, United States

<p>Ecosystem transformations to altered or novel ecological states are accelerating across the globe. Indicators of ecological resilience to disturbance and resistance to invasion can aid in assessing risks and prioritizing areas for conservation and restoration. The sagebrush biome encompasses parts of 11 western states and is experiencing rapid transformations due to human population growth, invasive species, altered disturbance regimes, and climate change. We built on prior use of static soil moisture and temperature regimes to develop new, ecologically relevant and climate-responsive indicators of both resilience and resistance. Our new indicators were based on climate and soil water availability variables derived from process-based ecohydrological models that allow predictions of future conditions. We asked: (1) Which variables best indicate resilience and resistance? (2) What are the relationships among the indicator variables and resilience and resistance categories? (3) How do patterns of resilience and resistance vary across the area? We assembled a large database (n = 24,045) of vegetation sample plots from regional monitoring programs and derived multiple climate and soil water availability variables for each plot from ecohydrological simulations. We used USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service National Soils Survey Information, Ecological Site Descriptions, and expert knowledge to develop and assign ecological types and resilience and resistance categories to each plot. We used random forest models to derive a set of 19 climate and water availability variables that best predicted resilience and resistance categories. Our models had relatively high multiclass accuracy (80% for resilience; 75% for resistance). Top indicator variables for both resilience and resistance included mean temperature, coldest month temperature, climatic water deficit, and summer and driest month precipitation. Variable relationships and patterns differed among ecoregions but reflected environmental gradients; low resilience and resistance were indicated by warm and dry conditions with high climatic water deficits, and moderately high to high resilience and resistance were characterized by cooler and moister conditions with low climatic water deficits. The new, ecologically-relevant indicators provide information on the vulnerability of resources and likely success of management actions and can be used to develop new approaches and tools for prioritizing areas for conservation and restoration actions.</p>

Preparedness for Contingencies: A Systematic Review of the Factors that Influence the Crisis Resilience of Project Managers

<p>The goal of this review paper is to investigate factors that contribute to project managers&#39; crisis resilience through a systematic review of the literature and bibliometric analysis using VOXviewer. Existing research on project management and resilience focuses on urban resilience, community resilience, organisational resilience, team resilience, individual resilience, resilience of critical infrastructure, and flood resilience. In the context of project managers, however, the factors that influence crisis resilience and preparedness remain unclear. Using the PRISMA framework for systematic literature, 55 peer-reviewed articles published between 1993 and 2022 that met our criteria were identified through a structured keyword search in the Scopus and WoS databases. The systematic review and bibliometric analysis reveal eight (8) clusters, which we further categorise into four determinants. This is the most important finding of this review. In the context of the roles of project managers, the results of a comparative analysis reveal four prominent factors for enhancing crisis resilience: 1. leadership (individual resilience, influence, team trust, emotional intelligence); 2. interpersonal skill (conflict management, persistence, crisis preparedness); 3. agility (proactiveness, coping capacity, and adaptive capacity); 4. risk management and vulnerability (perception, awareness)&nbsp;. These factors are essential for developing project managers who are less susceptible to future crises and disasters. This study has exhaustively characterised the possibilities and capacities of crisis resilience in terms of competency, integration, collaboration, and novelty; however, the search was restricted to a small number of databases and a short period of time, which could be explored in future research. According to the findings, most previous research on crisis resilience focused on emergency preparedness and was primarily conducted in Western and American studies. There is a lack of a holistic perspective on crisis resilience, which will be developed. We believe that international collaboration efforts to establish a platform for the exchange of knowledge between Western and American nations and ASEAN members are necessary</p>

Malaysian Coral Reef Ecosystem Resilience

GEOLAB Project CTP-ISSR: monotonic and cyclic Centrifuge Tests on Piles in sand proving Innovative Solutions to enhance Structural Resilience

<p>The existing structures are facing continuous changes in the loading conditions during their life span. These changes can be caused by weather and geo-hazards events and affect the structural response which is often already weakened by aging.</p> <p>A clear understanding of the interaction between the superstructure, the foundation and the surrounding soil is one of the crucial aspects to deal with to adapt the design and maintenance to enhance the resilience of new and existing Critical Infrastructures (CI) often used way beyond their life expectancy. Besides the loading components already considered in engineering practice, CI endure loads having cyclic nature acting continuously during service life (e.g., wind) which are often disregarded in foundation design and may trigger collapse mechanisms. Indeed, they are usually modelled as equivalent-static actions thus neglecting the accumulation of generalized permanent displacements of piled foundations in terms of settlement, sliding and rotation. This lack in design approach can be attributed to very limited research contributions dealing with cyclic loads.&nbsp;</p> <p>The CTP-ISSR (monotonic and cyclic Centrifuge Tests on Piles in sand proving Innovative Solutions to enhance Structural Resilience) project aims at investigating via centrifuge tests the behaviour of piled foundations under different loading types. Two series of centrifuge experiments on annular shaped pile groups and isolated piles embedded in Hostun sand were carried out at an increased gravity of 50 g in the Turner Beam Centrifuge at Schofield Centre, University of Cambridge.&nbsp;</p> <p>To simulate prototype reinforced concrete piles, model piles, made up of cement and metal wires, were manufactured in laboratory by means of an ad-hoc mould and manual mortar pouring. Such modelling is necessary to replicate the strong dependency of pile cross-sectional moment capacity on the axial force. Piles were installed in an 850 mm steel tub filled with manually poured Hostun sand prepared with a low-to-medium relative density.&nbsp;</p> <p>The first test included 2 single piles ad 2 groups of 8 piles connected by a circular rigid cap clear from the soil. The model foundations were subjected to monotonic vertical loads or vertical eccentric cyclic loads of different amplitudes and frequencies. In a similar fashion, the second test included 3 single piles ad 2 pile groups. In this case, the model foundations were subjected to monotonic vertical or horizontal loads or to cyclic horizontal loads of different amplitudes and frequencies. The response of the foundation system, in terms of loads and displacements, was monitored through loads cells, Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs) and Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS). A miniaturized Cone Penetration Test (mini-CPT) was used to characterize the soil before the test execution. The experimental campaign was accomplished in 10 working days (including, among the others, model preparation, execution, data acquisition and dismantle).&nbsp;</p> <p>The results of the experiments will serve as benchmarks for the development of a non-linear macroelement for piled foundation. Adopting this innovative approach allows the strengthening of CI resilience by adapting the traditional design and maintenance to properly consider changing loading conditions in a simple yet reliable manner.&nbsp;</p> <p>Researchers and practitioners will be the beneficiaries of the outcome of this research, expecting the following advantages:&nbsp;<br> - Innovation in design, with the possibility to properly consider cyclic loading;<br> - Improvement in identifying possible failure mechanisms and the required maintenance to enhance reliability and resilience of existing CI.</p>

The focus will be on participatory processes and citizen engagement practices, looking in particular at their relevance for physically and socially vulnerable urban areas. The event is designed as a knowledge-sharing opportunity for cities and will include the participation of researchers and experts working on the field with municipalities.</p> <p>The project &ldquo;Waterproofing Data: Engaging Stakeholders in Sustainable Flood Risk Governance for Urban Resilience&rdquo; will be discussed as a successful case study, focusing on data co-production practices and the role of digital tools. The project has been implemented in several Brazilian cities to build resilience to flooding in vulnerable communities by engaging citizens in data generation processes critical to design effective early-warning systems and strategies to reduce the risk of flood-related events. Professor Jo&atilde;o Porto De Albuquerque (University of Glasgow, UK) and Professor Maria Alexandra Viegas da Cunha (Funda&ccedil;&atilde;o Getulio Vargas, S&atilde;o Paolo, Brasil) will illustrate the results of Waterproofing Data project and its innovative methodology, discussing opportunities for its implementation in cities both in Brasil and Europe and application to a broad spectrum of extreme events, from flooding to heatwaves and drought.</p>

Message metadata includes satellite and transmitter identifier, satellite position, timestamp, and estimated noise level. Data used in: Assessing the resilience and viability of communities in a changing environment

<p>In order to assess community resilience, we propose to analyse how variation in overall abundance of individuals affect the number of species. We define community senstivity as the ratio between rate of change in log expected number of individuals in the community and the rate of change in the log expected number of species. Second, we define community resistance as the proportional reduction in expected number of individuals that the community can sustain before expecting to lose one species. To illustrate these concepts we use four datasets of bird communities in European deciduous forests.</p> <p>We estimated the total variance of the species abundance distribution in order to calculate the community sensitivity and resistance. We found large differences in species heterogeneity and species-specific response to environmental fluctuations, the two major components of the total variance.</p> <p>The datasets are collected from various previously published sources, see references below and in the paper. The code for importing and analysing the raw data as done in the paper can be found here:<span class="ng-binding"> <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8252471">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8252471</a>, but we also provide better-structured datasets for easier applications to others.<br></span></p>

Data archive for: Fire-regime variability and ecosystem resilience over four millennia in a Rocky Mountain subalpine watershed

<p>Wildfires strongly influence forest ecosystem processes, including carbon and nutrient cycling and vegetation dynamics. As fire activity increases under changing climate conditions, the ecological and biogeochemical resilience of many forest ecosystems remains unknown. To investigate the resilience of forest ecosystems to changing climate and wildfire activity over decades to millennia, we developed a 4800-yr high-resolution lake-sediment record from Silver Lake, Montana, USA (47.360° N, 115.566° W). Charcoal particles, pollen grains, element concentrations, and stable isotopes of C and N serve as proxies of past changes in fire, vegetation, and ecosystem processes such as nitrogen cycling and soil erosion, within a small subalpine forest watershed. A published lake-level history from Silver Lake provides a local record of paleohydrology. A trend toward increased effective moisture over the late Holocene coincided with a distinct shift in the pollen assemblage c. 1900 yr BP, resulting from increased subalpine conifer abundance. Fire activity, inferred from peaks in macroscopic charcoal, decreased significantly after 1900 yr BP, from one fire event every 126 yr (83–184 yr, 95% CI) from 4800–1900 yr BP, to one event every 223 yr (175–280 yr) from 1900 yr BP to present. Across the record, individual fire events were followed by two distinct decadal-scale biogeochemical responses, reflecting differences in ecosystem impacts of fires on watershed processes. These distinct biogeochemical responses were interpreted as reflecting fire severity, highlighting (i) erosion, likely from large or high-severity fires, and (ii) nutrient transfers and enhanced within-lake productivity, likely from lower-severity or patchier fires. Biogeochemical and vegetation proxies returned to pre-fire values within decades regardless of the nature of fire effects. Paleo records of fire and ecosystem responses provide a novel view revealing past variability in fire effects, analogous to spatial variability in fire severity observed within contemporary wildfires. Overall, the paleo record highlights ecosystem resilience to fire across long-term variability in climate and fire activity. Higher fire frequencies in past millennia relative to the 20th and 21st centuries suggest that northern Rocky Mountain subalpine ecosystems could remain resilient to future increases in fire activity, provided continued ecosystem recovery within decades.</p>
