Data of Västilä & Jilbert (2024): Evaluating multiannual sedimentary nutrient retention in agricultural two-stage channels

<p>This dataset contains measured and modelled data on the flow-sediment-nutrient interactions in a two-stage (compound) agricultural channel in Sipoo, Finland. The whole dataset is analyzed by V&auml;stil&auml; &amp; Jilbert (2024), but parts of the data have been previously described and analyzed by <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15715124.2011.572888" target="_blank" rel="noopener">V&auml;stil&auml; &amp; J&auml;rvel&auml; (2011)</a>, <a href="https://ascelibrary.org/doi/full/10.1061/%28ASCE%29HY.1943-7900.0001058" target="_blank" rel="noopener">V&auml;stil&auml; et al. (2016)</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11368-017-1776-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">V&auml;stil&auml; &amp; J&auml;rvel&auml; (2018)</a> and <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/13/16/9349" target="_blank" rel="noopener">V&auml;stil&auml; et al. Retention fraction of 15N-labelled deposited ammonium and nitrate in forests

<p>The impacts of enhanced nitrogen (N) deposition on global forest carbon (C) sink and other ecosystem services may depend on whether N is deposited in reduced (mainly as ammonium) or oxidized forms (mainly as nitrate) and the subsequent fate of each. However, the fates of the two key reactive N forms and its contribution to forest C sink is unclear. W<span><span>e conducted ecosystem-scale paired <sup>15</sup>N-labelling experiments in nine forests across China to quantify N retention fractions for both deposited ammonium and nitrate, including tropical and sub-tropical forests for the first time. By combining these results with four previous experiments from temperate Europe and North America, here we show that total ecosystem N retention is similar for ammonium and nitrate, but plants consistently take up more of the labelled nitrate  than ammonium<sup> </sup> while soils retain more ammonium than nitrate. Nitrogen retention in plants and soils across sites is predicted by a combination of tree (NPP and woody biomass) and soil (organic layer mass and soil C/N ratios) variables. Greater proportions of deposited N are retained in N-limited ecosystems with low soil N availability and high soil C/N ratios. We estimate that N deposition-induced C sink in forests contributes more than 20% of the total terrestrial C sink. Although less N is deposited in oxidized than reduced state, their total contributions to the global forest C sink are approximately equal due to more efficient use by trees of the oxidized than the reduced form. Our study demonstrates differential fates of reduced and oxidized N deposition that improves current understanding of the C-N interaction in forests and indicates a greater C sink attributable to atmospheric N deposition than previous estimates.</span></span></p>

Phosphorus supply increases nitrogen transformation rates and retention in soil: a global meta-analysis

<p>Interactions between nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are important for plant growth and ecosystem carbon (C) sequestration. While effects of N supply on P dynamics have been much studied, much less is known about the opposite (P-effect on N). We conducted a meta-analysis by compiling a total of 1734 individual experimental observations from 116 peer-reviewed publications to assess P-addition effects on soil N dynamics. Globally, P additions increased the soil total N (TN) pool, potentially as a result of enhanced plant and microbial immobilization and reduced N losses, with a stronger effect detected under longer duration of P addition (≥ 5 years). A coupled increase in soil organic C with TN signifies the fundamental role of exogenous P supply in enhancing soil C sequestration. Phosphorus addition accelerated some of the soil N cycling processes including gross N mineralization, gross nitrification, and denitrification, with the effect sizes varying among ecosystem types and increasing with P addition rates. Our results indicate the fundamental role of P in affecting soil N pools and processes, and highlight the efficacy of P supply in sequestering soil C and mitigating global C emission.</p>

Partner retention as a mechanism to reduce sexual conflict over care in a seabird

<p><span>The costs of caring for offspring are predicted to lead to an evolutionary conflict between parents, where each parent benefits if the other provides the majority of care. However, in many biparental species, breeding partners remain together for multiple breeding attempts and their respective future reproductive fitness prospects are therefore intertwined. Since an increase in current care by a long-term partner reduces that partner's future investment and longevity, individuals do not automatically only benefit when their partner provides care. We test whether selection will favour individuals that reduce the burden of care falling on long-term partners, thus decreasing evolutionary conflict over parental care. Using a semi-natural, captive colony of black-headed gulls (<em>Chroicocephalus ridibundus</em>), we show that benefits of long-term partner retention can indeed reduce sexual conflict. Long-term partners have less intense courtships and are more behaviourally compatible, and individuals in long-term pairs spare each other's resources by increasing their own parental investment compared to those with new partners. Lastly, we demonstrate that high partner compatibility in newly-formed pairs can select for commitment to the pair bond. Our results highlight that compatibility benefits of long-term partnerships can increase selection for mate retention and increase parental investment.</span></p>

Data for: Low protease activity in B cell follicles promotes retention of intact antigens after immunization

<p>The structural integrity of vaccine antigens is critical to the generation of protective antibody responses, but the impact of protease activity on vaccination in vivo is poorly understood. We characterized protease activity in lymph nodes and found that antigens were rapidly degraded in the subcapsular sinus, paracortex, and interfollicular regions, whereas low protease activity and antigen degradation rates were detected in the vicinity of follicular dendritic cells (FDCs). Correlated with these findings, immunization regimens designed to target antigen to FDCs led to germinal centers dominantly targeting intact antigen, whereas traditional immunizations led to much weaker responses that equally targeted the intact immunogen and antigen breakdown products. Thus, spatially compartmentalized antigen proteolysis affects humoral immunity and can be exploited.</p>

ART uptake and early retention among pregnant women screened HIV infected in informal health centers in Cameroon

<p><span>Informal health centers </span><span>are booming in Cameroon and are utilized by a large part of the population. Most of these IHCs have antenatal care services (ANC) and screen pregnant women for HIV.  This dataset was collected in informal health centers in two cities in Cameroon: Douala and Yaounde.</span></p> <p><span>This dataset aimed at firstly, investigate the initiation of Antiretroviral therapy (ART) in pregnant women screened positive for HIV in antenatal care services of IHCs, three months after HIV screening as well as their retention at 3 months post-initiation. Secondly, study the association between this intiation and retention with type of PMTCT site or model of care ( IHCs that offered integrated ANC and ART, VS those that required referral to HIV care centers). Third, identifying associated factors to ART non-initiation in this population</span><span>.</span></p> <p>From January 2018 to July 2020, we carried out a cohort study of pregnant women attending their first ANC and screened HIV positive at IHCs in Cameroon. <span>Consenting participants  were interviewed at three points: </span><span>the day of the delivery of the antenatal HIV test result, 3 months later and three months after ART initiation, using anonymous standardized questionnaires. The data collected were entered into Kobo collect and analyzed in SPSS V23.0 software.</span></p> <p>Descriptive statistics were performed. Frequencies and percentage for categorical variables; median and interquartile ranges for continuous variables. Proportions were used to calculate ART coverage and retention. Chi-square was used to compare the proportions of initiation of ART and retention between group of women screened in IHCs without ART and those screened in IHCs with ART integrated in antenatal care service. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated to ART non-initiation at 95% confidence interval. Baseline variables were initially analyzed univariately and those which were significant at the level of 5% were retained for multivariable logistic regression. Baseline variables used for this purpose were type of PMTCT site, age group, study level, income generating activity, income generating activity of partner, relationship duration, Primiparity, Pregnancy willingness, perceived self-efficacy of being able to initiate ART.</p> <p>A total of 182 pregnant women living with HIV were enrolled in the study. At the first ANC, 91% (166/182) were naïve of ART. Among them, only 45% (74/166) initiated ART and 65% (48/74) of them were retained in ART 3 months later. PWLHIV screened in IHCs with no ART (aOR = 14.07, 95%CI: 4.68-42.32, p&lt;0.001) and those who doubted their perceived capacity to initiate ART (aOR= 15.43, 95% CI: 4.45 to 53.44, p&lt; 0.001) were more likely to not initiate ART</p> <p>Given the low enrollment in ART among pregnant women living with HIV, screened in informal health centers, and the early low retention among those who initiated ART, greater attention in PMTCT policies in Cameroon should be given to pregnant women screened positive for HIV during ANC in informal health centers, in order to guarantee them a continuum of PMTCT care.</p>
