Data from: How scientists perceive the evolutionary origin of human traits: results of a survey study
Various hypotheses have been proposed for why the traits distinguishing humans from other primates originally evolved, and any given trait may have been explained both as an adaptation to different environments and as a result of demands from social organization or sexual selection. To find out how popular the different explanations are among scientists, we carried out an online survey among authors of recent scientific papers in journals covering relevant fields of science (palaeoanthropology, palaeontology, ecology, evolution, human biology). Some of the hypotheses were clearly more popular among the 1266 respondents than others, but none was universally accepted or rejected. Even the most popular of the hypotheses were assessed "very likely" by <50 % of the respondents, but many traits had 1–3 hypotheses that were found at least moderately likely by >70 % of the respondents. An ordination of the hypotheses identified two strong gradients. Along one gradient, the hypotheses were sorted by their popularity, measured by the average credibility score given by the respondents. The second gradient separated all hypotheses postulating adaptation to swimming or diving into their own group. The average credibility scores given for different subgroups of the hypotheses were not related to respondent's age or number of publications authored. However, (palaeo)anthropologists were more critical of all hypotheses, and much more critical of the water-related ones, than were respondents representing other fields of expertise. Although most respondents did not find the water-related hypotheses likely, only a small minority found them unscientific. The most popular hypotheses were based on inherent drivers, i.e. they assumed the evolution of a trait to have been triggered by the prior emergence of another human-specific behavioural or morphological trait, but opinions differed as to which of the traits came first.
Data from: Willing or unwilling to share primary biodiversity data: results and implications of an international survey
Biodiversity science and conservation increasingly depend on the sharing and integration of large amounts of data, but many researchers resist sharing their primary biodiversity data. We recently conducted an international survey to ascertain the attitudes, experiences, and expectations regarding biodiversity data sharing and archiving of researchers. The results show that whereas most respondents are willing to share paper-related biodiversity data, more than sixty percent of respondents are unwilling to share primary data before publishing. Results indicate an underdeveloped culture of data sharing and several major technological and operational barriers. A major concern for researchers is appropriate benefits from data sharing. Most respondents would accept data archiving policies of journals. Researchers also express concerns about how to easily and efficiently deal with data and data quality in public databases. Expectations for biodiversity databases include standardization of data format, user-friendly data submission tools, formats for different types of data and coordination among databases. The survey results provide suggestions for improving data sharing and archiving by individual scientists, organizations, journals, and databases.
Data from: Clinical decision making in spinal fusion for chronic low back pain. Results of a nationwide survey among spine surgeons
OBJECTIVES: To assess the use of prognostic patient factors and predictive tests in clinical decision making for spinal fusion in patients with chronic low back pain. DESIGN AND SETTING: Nationwide survey among spine surgeons. PARTICIPANTS: Surgeon members of the Dutch Spine Society were questioned on their treatment strategy for chronic low back pain. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The surgeons' opinion on the use of prognostic factors and tests for patient selection were addressed, and the degree of uniformity was assessed. In addition, the influence of surgeon specific factors, such as clinical experience and training, was determined. RESULTS: The comments from 62 surgeons (70% response rate) were analysed. Forty-four surgeons (71%) had extensive clinical experience. There was a statistically significant lack of uniformity of opinion in 7 of the 11 items on prognostic factors and 8 of the 11 items on predictive tests, respectively. Imaging was valued much higher than predictive tests, psychological screening, or patient preferences (all p<0.01). Apart from the use of discography and long multi-segment fusions, differences in training or clinical experience did not appear to be of significant influence on treatment strategy. CONCLUSIONS: The present survey showed a lack of consensus among spine surgeons on the use of predictive tests for patient selection. Prognostic patient factors were not consistently incorporated in their treatment strategy. Clinical decision making for spinal fusion to treat chronic low back pain does not have a uniform evidence base in practice. Future research should focus on identifying subgroups of patients for whom spinal fusion is an effective treatment. Only a reliable prediction of surgical outcome, combined with the implementation of individual patient factors, may enable the instalment of consensus guidelines in surgical decision making for chronic low back pain.
Dataset for: Extent and types of gender-based discrimination against female medical students and physicians at five university hospitals in Germany – Results of an online survey
<p><strong><span>Objective</span></strong><span>: There is a gap in research on gender-based discrimination (GBD) in medical education and practice in Germany. This study therefore examines the extent and forms of GBD among female medical students and physicians in Germany. Causes, consequences and possible interventions of GBD are discussed.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span>: Female medical students (n=235) and female physicians (n=157) from five university hospitals in northern Germany were asked about their personal experiences with GBD in an online survey on self-efficacy expectations and individual perceptions of the "glass ceiling effect" using an open-ended question regarding their own experiences with GBD. The answers were analyzed by content analysis using inductive category formation and relative category frequencies. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span>: From both interviewed groups, approximately 75% of each reported having experienced GBD. Their experiences fell into five main categories: sexual harassment with subcategories of verbal and physical, discrimination based on existing/possible motherhood with subcategories of structural and verbal, direct preference for men, direct neglect of women, and derogatory treatment based on gender.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><strong><span>Conclusion</span></strong><span>: The study contributes to filling the aforementioned research gap. At the hospitals studied, GBD is a common phenomenon among both female medical students and physicians, manifesting itself in multiple forms. Transferability of the results beyond the hospitals studied to all of Germany seems plausible. Much is known about the causes, consequences and effective countermeasures against GBD. Those responsible for training and employers in hospitals should fulfill their responsibility by implementing measures from the set of empirically evaluated interventions.</span></p>

<p>In order to provide a picture of marine science communication in Europe being presented at the European Marine Board Future Science Brief N°8 ‘<a href="https://www.marineboard.eu/publications/marine-science-communication-europe-way-forward">Marine Science Communication in Europe: a way forward</a>’, the European Marine Board Communications Panel (EMCP) carried out three surveys targeting different stakeholder groups from across Europe. The results of these surveys underpin this document. Two main, in-depth surveys were carried out, one targeting experts (Ocean scientists, marine policy-makers, industry representatives, media professionals and Ocean communication or education experts) and the other targeting secondary-school students (17-18 years old). This dataset presents the results of the survey targeting students.</p>

Results of Common Loon territory monitoring (1979–2009) and of chick monitoring surveys (2004–2006) at Voyageurs National Park
<p>Recovering species are not returning to the same environments or communities from which they disappeared. Conservation researchers and practitioners are thus faced with additional challenges in ensuring species resilience in these rapidly changing ecosystems. Assessing the resilience of species in these novel systems can still be guided by species' ecology, including knowledge of their population size, life history traits, and behavioral adaptations, as well as the type, strength, and number of ways that they interact with other species in the community. We summarized broad trends of Common Loons (<em>Gavia</em> <em>immer</em>) breeding at Voyageurs National Park during 1973–2009 and evaluated the effects of increased risk from recovering Bald Eagles (<em>Haliaeetus</em> <em>leucocephalus</em>) on chick survival during 2004–2006. Adult Common Loons appear to have increased over time. Using Bayesian survival models that accounted for imperfect detection of unmarked individuals, we determined that chick survival of Common Loons was high from year to year and was unrelated to predation risk from Bald Eagles as chicks in territories closer to active nests did not experience greater mortality than those further away. We suggest that Common Loon chicks were unaffected by the recovery of this top predator during the three years of sampling. Previous research indicates that Bald Eagles and other predators are an important source of egg losses, but Common Loons can compensate by re–nesting. Despite current uncertainties from anthropogenic threats, knowledge of a species' ecology remains instrumental in determining their resilience during recovery. </p>
