Dataset: Pyroelectric Influence on Lithium Niobate During the Thermal Transition for Cryogenic Integrated Photonics
<p>Dataset of the publication "Pyroelectric Influence on Lithium Niobate During the Thermal Transition for Cryogenic Integrated Photonics", F. Thiele, et al., in the journal Materials for Quantum Technology (2023).</p> <p>Abstract:</p> <blockquote> <p>Lithium niobate has emerged as a promising platform for integrated quantum optics, enabling efficient generation, manipulation, and detection of quantum states of light. However, integrating single-photon detectors requires cryogenic operating temperatures, since the best performing detectors are based on narrow superconducting wires. While previous studies have demonstrated the operation of quantum light sources and electro-optic modulators in LiNbO<sub>3</sub> at cryogenic temperatures, the thermal transition between room temperature and cryogenic conditions introduces additional effects that can significantly influence device performance. In this paper, we investigate the generation of pyroelectric charges and their impact on the optical properties of lithium niobate waveguides when changing from room temperature to 25 K, and vice versa. We measure the generated pyroelectric charge flow and correlate this with fast changes in the birefringence acquired through the Sénarmont-method. Both electrical and optical influence of the pyroelectric effect occur predominantly at temperatures above 100 K.</p> </blockquote>
Negative Differential Resistance, Instability, and Critical Transition in Lightning Leader
<p>There is a challenging issue of die out and restrike of leaders in a burst of lightning event, such as multiplicity of strokes in grounded flash or recoil leader in cloud flash, although the argument involves the effects of channel characteristic of negative differential resistance instability, there is internal consistency about the instability, the bi-stability of insulation and induction and their critical transition from the view of bifurcation theory of nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we examined the differential resistance characteristics of the leader-streams lighting system, we associate the leader-streamer channel differential resistance characteristics and sign change with channel state and instability transitions. The critical current and potential difference conditions for the stable transition of the leader-streamer channel are investigated. It is found that the necessary current required for the stable development of the channel is increased with the length of the leader channel, while the internal channel electric field of the leader decreases accordingly.</p>

Data from: Topological transitions of the generalized Pancharatnam-Berry phase
<p>Distinct from the dynamical phase, in a cyclic evolution, a system's state may acquire an additional component, a.k.a. geometric phase. Recently, it has been demonstrated that geometric phases can be induced by a sequence of generalized measurements implemented on a single qubit. Furthermore, it has been predicted that such geometric phases may exhibit a topological transition as a function of the measurement strength. We demonstrate and study this transition experimentally by employing an optical platform where the qubit is represented by the polarisation of light and the weak measurement is performed by means of coupling with the spatial degree of freedom. Our protocol can be interpreted in terms of environment-induced geometric phases, whose values are topologically determined by the environment-system coupling strength. Our results show that the two limits of geometric phase induced by either sequences of either weak or projective measurements are topologically distinct. </p>
Constitutive behavior of olivine gouge across the brittle-ductile transition
<p>The bottom of the lithosphere is characterized by a thermally controlled transition from brittle to ductile deformation. While the mechanical behavior of rocks firmly within the brittle and ductile regimes is relatively well understood, how the transition operates remains elusive. Here, we study the mechanical properties of pure olivine gouge from 100 to 500ºC under 100 MPa pore-fluid pressure in a triaxial deformation apparatus as a proxy for the mechanical properties of the upper mantle across the brittle-ductile transition. We describe the mechanical data with a rate-, state-, and temperature-dependent constitutive law with multiple thermally activated deformation mechanisms. The stress power exponents decrease from 70±10 in the brittle regime to 17±3 and 4±2 in the semi-brittle and ductile regimes, respectively. The mechanical model consistently explains the mechanical behavior of olivine gouge across the brittle-ductile transition, capturing the gradual evolution from cataclasis to crystal plasticity.</p>
Transition between distinct hybrid skyrmion textures through their hexagonal-to-square crystal transformation in a polar magnet
<p>The file Manuscript data files.7z contains the experimental data used for creating the figures in the manuscript entitled "Transition between distinct hybrid skyrmion textures through their hexagonal-to-square crystal transformation in a polar magnet" that appear in Nature Communications 14, 8050 (2023).</p><p>Paper abstract: Magnetic skyrmions, topological vortex-like spin textures, garner significant interest due to their unique properties and potential applications in nanotechnology. While they typically form a hexagonal crystal with distinct internal magnetisation textures known as Bloch- or Néel-type, recent theories suggest the possibility for direct transitions between skyrmion crystals of different lattice structures and internal textures. To date however, experimental evidence for these potentially useful phenomena have remained scarce. Here, we discover the polar tetragonal magnet EuNiGe3 to host two hybrid skyrmion phases, each with distinct internal textures characterised by anisotropic combinations of Bloch- and Néel-type windings. Variation of the magnetic field drives a direct transition between the two phases, with the modification of the hybrid texture concomitant with a hexagonal-to-square skyrmion crystal transformation. We explain these observations with a theory that includes the key ingredients of momentum-resolved Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that compete at the observed low symmetry magnetic skyrmion crystal wavevectors. Our findings underscore the potential of polar magnets with rich interaction schemes as promising for discovering new topological magnetic phases.</p>
Perturbative effective field theory expansions for cosmological phase transitions, dataset
<p>This dataset is the work of Oliver Gould and Tuomas V.I. Tenkanen. It collects the numerical data from the paper <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.01672">"Perturbative effective field theory expansions for cosmological phase transitions"</a> (2023). It primarily contains data from perturbative calculations of the thermal evolution of the real-triplet extended Standard Model at two benchmark parameter points.</p><p>In addition, for comparison to the perturbative results, we have included data of the scalar quadratic condensates as a function of temperature from the lattice Monte-Carlo simulations of Lauri Niemi, Michael J. Ramsey-Musolf, Tuomas V.I. Tenkanen and David J. Weir, from the paper <a href="https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.171802">"Thermodynamics of a Two-Step Electroweak Phase Transition"</a> (2020). We thank the authors for granting permission to reproduce this data here.</p><p>Everything is contained within the archive file <a href="https://zenodo.org/api/records/10353066/draft/files/triplet_two_step_data.tar.gz/content">triplet_two_step_data.tar.gz</a>, a tarball compressed with Gzip. Scaling regimes and fluctuations of observables in computer glasses approaching the unjamming transition
<p>This dataset can be used to reproduce the figures in the corresponding manuscript, in preparation for publication in the Journal of Chemical Physics. As described in the manuscript, the (mostly statistical) quantities presented here were computed from ensembles of simulated disordered solids (harmonic sphere packings, diluted spring networks, and packing derived networks). The individual simulations involve the minimization of the system's energy which is computed from positional degrees of freedom (of particles in a packing or nodes in a network). Macroscopic quantities (such as shear modulus or contact number/excess connectivity) are then computed for each sample. The displacement response feilds are computed by solving a linear matrix equation involving the Hessian of 2D packings of harmonic spheres. See the manuscript for more details.</p>
Short-range correlation of stress chains near solid-to-liquid transition in active monolayers
<p>Using a three-dimensional model of cell monolayers, we study the spatial organization of active stress chains as the monolayer transitions from a solid to a liquid state. The critical exponents that characterize this transition map the isotropic stress percolation onto the two-dimensional random percolation universality class suggesting short-range stress correlations near this transition. This mapping is achieved via two distinct, independent pathways: (i) cell-cell adhesion and (ii) active traction forces. We unify our findings by linking the nature of this transition to high-stress fluctuations, distinctly linked to each pathway. The results elevate the importance of the transmission of mechanical information in dense active matter and provide a new context for understanding the non-equilibrium statistical physics of phase transition in active systems.</p>

Plankton and benthic foraminiferal dataset for the study of the Eocene-Oligocene transition
<p>The Eocene–Oligocene transition (EOT) was the crucial turning point when Earth's climate shifted to its current cool state. Understanding how life responded to this "warmhouse-to-icehouse" shift was limited by the absence of high-resolution fossil data. Here, we use a novel AI algorithm to construct a 28-myr-long species richness history of foraminifera with ~26,000-year resolution. A significant richness decline occurred during the EOT, eliminating 74% of species. Planktonic and larger benthic foraminiferal extinctions are associated with rapid cooling, sea-level fall, and positive carbon isotopic excursion. However, small benthic foraminifera in deep oceans experienced a two-phase biocrisis coinciding with changes in food supply and volcanic activity. These findings reveal complicated, ecologically differentiated environment-life processes and the need to reconsider other major bioevents in deep time.</p>

Results for the paper "The impact of temporal hydrogen regulation on hydrogen exporters and their domestic energy transition"
<p>As global demand for green hydrogen rises, potential hydrogen exporters move into the spotlight. However, the large-scale installation of on-grid hydrogen electrolysis for<br>export can have profound impacts on domestic energy prices and energy-related emissions. Our investigation explores the interplay of hydrogen exports, domestic<br>energy transition and temporal hydrogen regulation, employing a sector-coupled energy model in Morocco. We find substantial co-benets of domestic climate change<br>mitigation and hydrogen exports, whereby exports can reduce domestic electricity prices while mitigation reduces hydrogen export prices. However, increasing hydrogen<br>exports quickly in a system that is still dominated by fossil fuels can substantially raise domestic electricity prices, if green hydrogen production is not regulated.<br>Surprisingly, temporal matching of hydrogen production lowers domestic electricity cost by up to 31% while the effect on exporters is minimal. This policy instrument can<br>steer the welfare (re-)distribution between hydrogen exporting firms, hydrogen importers, and domestic electricity consumers and hereby increases acceptance<br>among actors.</p>
