"Shifts in Phytoplankton Composition and Stepwise Climate Change during the Middle Miocene" - Age-depth models and calcareous nannofossil census data
<p>This is a data supplement to the paper "Shifts in Phytoplankton Composition and Stepwise Climate Change during the Middle Miocene" (Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology).</p> <p><strong>Data Set S1</strong>. Age-depth models.</p> <p>This data set includes the file SI_Tables S2-S5_Henderiks_etal.xlsx containing raw age-depth tie point compilations for each site and sample age estimates, as well as the final, site-specific input files and output (age assignments) from the <em>Undatable </em>Matlab software Version 1.1 (Lougheed and Obrochta, 2019; https://doi.org/10.1029/2018PA003457). The age-depth models presented in this study can be reproduced by running the age-depth model input files in the <em>Undatable</em> graphical user interface (GUI), whereby the necessary settings for the specific number of Monte Carlo iterations, xfactor and bootstrapping are contained in the header of the input files. Note that input and output files are grouped in two zipped folders: a cm- and meter-depth scale version (the latter decreases computing time and produced the age-depth plots shown in Figures S1 and S2 of the paper).</p> <p><strong>Data Set S2</strong>. Calcareous nannofossil census data.</p> <p>The file SI_ds02_Henderiks_etal.xlsx consists of two separate data sheets:<br> 1. Middle Miocene nannofossil abundance estimates (N/g) and genus-level census counts (%, ±95% CI) at 5 different Atlantic deep-sea sites (Sites 982, 608, 925, 926 and 1264).<br> 2. <p>This map contains all datasets and R-scripts used to write the paper with the same name. This map also contains the original research proposal on which the datasets are based. The datasets contain location data on the cytotypes of the common Dandelion and the Cuckoo flower in Europe. The data has been collected using a meta-analysis. The R-scripts present are for data preparation, SDM's for current and future scenarios and bioclimatic variable preparation.</p>

Data from: Climate change and landscape-use patterns influence recent past distribution of giant pandas
<p>Climate change is one of the most pervasive threats to biodiversity globally, yet the influence of climate relative to other drivers of species depletion and range contraction remain difficult to disentangle. Here, we examine climatic and non-climatic correlates of giant panda (<i>Ailuropoda melanoleuca</i>) distribution using a large-scale 30-year dataset to evaluate whether a changing climate has already influenced panda distribution. We document several climatic patterns, including increasing temperatures, and alterations to seasonal temperature and precipitation. We found that while climatic factors were the most influential predictors of panda distribution, their importance diminished over time, while landscape variables have become relatively more influential. We conclude that the panda's distribution has been influenced by changing climate, but conservation intervention to manage habitat is working to increasingly offset these negative consequences.</p>

Citizens Assemble: A study on the impact of climate reporting in the Irish media 'before', 'during' and 'after' the Citizens' Assembly on 'How the State can make Ireland a leader in tackling climate change'.
<p>This dataset contains the .csv file with raw coded data from 594 articles in four Irish media publications (Coded_2020.csv), the .csv file containing all 594 articles (All articles in full (594).csv) along with the associated R Notebook (Citizens Assemble.Rmd) allowing those interested to download the R code. Fonio millet genome unlocks African orphan crop diversity for agriculture in a changing climate
<p class="western">Sustainable food production in the context of climate change necessitates diversification of agriculture and a more efficient utilization of plant genetic resources. Fonio millet (<i>Digitaria exilis</i>) is an orphan African cereal crop with a great potential for dryland agriculture. Here, we established high-quality genomic resources to facilitate fonio improvement through molecular breeding. These include a chromosome-scale reference assembly and deep re-sequencing of 183 cultivated and wild <i>Digitaria</i> accessions, enabling insights into genetic diversity, population structure, and domestication. Fonio diversity is shaped by climatic, geographic, and ethnolinguistic factors. Two genes associated with seed size and shattering showed signatures of selection. Most known domestication genes from other cereal models however have not experienced strong selection in fonio, providing direct targets to rapidly improve this crop for agriculture in hot and dry environments.</p>
Predicting hydrologic responses to climate changes in highly glacierized and mountainous region Upper Indus Basin
<p><span>The Upper Indus Basin (UIB) is a major source of supplying water to different areas because of snow and glaciers melt and</span><span> is also enduring the regional impacts of global climate change. The expected changes in temperature, precipitation, and snowmelt </span><span>could be reasons for further escalation of the problem. </span><span>Therefore, estimation of hydrological processes </span><span>is </span><span>critical for UIB. The objectives of this paper were to estimate the impacts of climate change on water resources and future projection for surface water under different climatic scenarios using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The methodology includes</span><span>:</span><span> (i) development of SWAT model using </span><span>land cover, soil and meteorological data; (ii) calibration of the model using daily flow data from </span><span>1978-1993; (iii) model validation for the time 1994-2003; (iv) bias correction of Regional Climate Model (v) </span><span>utilization of </span><span>bias corrected RCM for future assessment under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 </span><span>for mid (2041-2070) and late century (2071-2100). The results of the study revealed a strong correlation between simulated and observed flow </span><span>with R<sup>2</sup> and NSE equals 0.85 each for daily flow</span><span>. For validation, R<sup>2</sup> and NSE were found to be 0.84 and 0.80 respectively. Compared to baseline period (1976-2005), the result of RCM showed an increase in temperature ranging from 2.36°C to 3.50°C and 2.92°C to 5.23°C for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 respectively, till the end of 21<sup>st</sup> century. Likewise, the increase in annual average precipitation is 2.4% to 2.5% and 6.0% to 4.6% (mid to late century) under RCP 4.5 and 8.5 respectively. The model simulation results for RCP4.5 showed increase in flow by 19.24% and 16.78% for mid and late century respectively. For RCP8.5, the increase in flow is 20.13% and 15.86% during mid and late century respectively. The model was more sensitive towards available moisture and snowmelt parameters. Thus, SWAT model </span><span>could </span><span>be used as effective tool for climate change valuation and for sustainable management of water resources in future.</span></p>
