<p>Raw data used for the article "Premature birth affects visual body representation and body schema in preterm children"</p> <p>Research has demonstrated that from the first six months of life infants show early sensitivity to body visual features and rely on sensorimotor and proprioceptive inputs in forming representations of their own bodies. Premature birth interferes with typical exposition to visual, sensorimotor and proprioceptive stimulation, thus presumably affecting the development of body representations. Here, we tested this hypothesis by comparing the performance of preterm children with that of age-matched full-term children in two tasks assessing, respectively, visual body processing and body schema. We found that preterm children had spared configural processing but altered holistic processing of others’ bodies and showed a general difficulty in expressing visuospatial judgements on body stimuli. Furthermore, body-centered visuospatial abilities were associated with specific impairments in operating object-based visuospatial transformations. The findings of this study indicate that preterm birth might interfere with the development of body representations at the levels of body visual perceptual processing and of body schema, with effects even on visuo-spatial abilities for non-bodily stimuli. Body-centered rehabilitative interventions should be proposed to preterm children in order to enhance visuo-spatial abilities and higher-level cognitive functions.</p>
Visual and Motor Skills Development in Preterm and Term Infants
<p>Preterm birth is a common occurrence that warrants the attention of the World Health Organization due to its potential long-term consequences across various domains, including visual, motor, and executive skills. Despite frequent monitoring of infant development in follow-up procedures, the predominant use of developmental scales often overlooks the integration of electrophysiological data.</p> <p>In light of this, the primary aim of this study is to contribute to the analysis of the developmental consequences of preterm birth. To achieve this, two groups of healthy infants (preterm and term) will be followed longitudinally during their first year at four specific time points (4, 6, 9, and 12 months). Monitoring methods will encompass clinical parameters, the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, as well as electrophysiological signals such as Visual Evoked Potentials and Electrodermal Activity.</p> <p>The algorithms used to process visual evoked potential and electrodermal activity will be shared afther the data dissemination. </p> <p>The data will be presented in an organized manner, grouping participants by preterm or term condition, with each participant's data from all four assessment appointments being comprehensively showcased.</p>
Masked or not, I smile to you: Exploring full-term and preterm infants' social smiles to adults wearing a protective facemask
<p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “Exploring full-term and preterm infants’ social smiles to adults wearing a protective facemask”, published on Infant Behavior and Development Journal, doi: 10.1016/j.infbeh.2024.101947. This publication explores early emergence of social smiles in preterm (PT) and full-term (FT) infants at 3 months (corrected age for prematurity) and how the use of protective facemasks by adults affects the display of social smiles.</p> <p>Procedures</p> <p>We enrolled 30 FT and 30 PT infants (gestational age ≤ 32 weeks). Infants' social smiles displays were assessed at 2–3-month-age (corrected) across a three-episode (masked mother; unmasked mother; masked adult female stranger) videotaped interactive task. During each episode, the adult was instructed to maintain specific facial expressions (happy-smiling, sad-frowning, neutral-unresponsive) for 15 second windows and then instructed to interact spontaneously for 45 s (of which the first 15 s were coded). Social smiles were coded in each 15 s sequence as 0, absent or 1, present at least once.</p> <p>Analytical plan</p> <p>A 2-block hierarchical logistic regression was used, firstly testing for differences in probability of social smiles display in the three mask conditions (masked mother – MM, masked stranger – MS, and unmasked mother – UM) (Model 1) and subsequently exploring possible additional effects of group (full term – FT, preterm – PT) and facial expression (smiling, neutral, frown, and interactive) (Model 2).</p> <p>Findings in brief</p> <p>FT and PT infants did not differ in the display of social smiles. In both groups, social smiles were mostly exhibited in response to happy/smiling and spontaneously interacting partners. Overall, no effect of wearing a protective facemask emerged. The use of protective facemasks did not result in a lower display of social smiles. The findings suggest that FT and PT might be equally sensitive to their adult interactive partners in terms of social smiles displays at 2 – 3-month-age.<span> </span></p>
