Blood Pressure and Body Weight Have Different Effects on Pulse Wave Velocity and Cardiac Mass in Children.
<p><strong>Background: </strong>High blood pressure (BP) and excess weight can lead to early cardiovascular organ damage already in children. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) is the non-invasive gold standard method for assessing aortic stiffness, while carotid-radial PWV (cr-PWV) provides information on the distensibility of the upper limb arteries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of BP and BMI z-scores with arterial stiffness and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in a pediatric population.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>In 343 children (57.7% males; age ± SD 11.7 ± 2.9 years), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) BP, BMI, cf-PWV, cr-PWV and LVMI were measured. A multiple linear regression model was used to assess the impact of BMI and SBP (or DBP) z-scores on cf-PWV, cr-PWV and LVMI.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>About 21% of children were normal weight, 34% were overweight and 45% obese. Adjusted for possible confounders, SBP and DBP z-scores were significantly associated with cf-PWV (<em>p</em> < 0.001), while only DBP z-scores were related to cr-PWV (<em>p</em> < 0.01). BMI was neither associated with cf-PWV nor with cr-PWV values but was a strong predictor of LVMI (<0.001), whereas cardiac mass and BP z-scores were not related.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Our study suggests that, in children, elevated BP values and excess weight may have different effects on the heart and the vessels in causing early cardiovascular alterations.</p> <div class="pg-extension"> </div>

LP MOON SUN PULSE DATA V1.0
The sun pulse data set is a record of times that the Lunar Prospector sun sensor detects the Sun. These sun pulse times are derived from ground processing of the sun sensor data, earth-moon limb sensor data, and the spacecraft ephemeris. This data set is part of the Lunar Prospector Level 0 data archive. The sun pulse times are used in determining the spacecraft spin rate and orientation as a function of time. Because the Lunar Prospector spacecraft is sometimes in eclipse with the Sun, the sun pulse data set is generated on the ground to include both actual sun pulse times based on the sun sensor measurements and estimated sun pulse times based on the history of spin rate change during all prior eclipses.
Prognostic Relevance of Left Ventricular Thrombus Motility: Assessment by Pulsed Wave Tissue Doppler Imaging
<p>Raw data.</p> <p>Abstract<br> Pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging (PW-TDI) easily detects motion of cardiac structures. Hence, PW-TDI could be of value for<br> assessing potentially cardioembolic masses. We sought to evaluate the prognostic value of left ventricular (LV) thrombus mobility<br> assessed by PW-TDI. In 83 consecutive patients with echocardiographically detected LV thrombi, PW-TDI echocardiographic<br> study was performed. At 1-year follow-up, the composite of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) defined as all-cause<br> mortality plus hospitalizations for stroke/systemic embolism was evaluated. Seventy-two patients (77.1 + 13.1 year/old,<br> 32 males) were studied. All thrombi were located at the LV apex. At 1-year follow-up, 17 cardioembolic events occurred. By<br> univariable Cox analysis, variables associated with MACE were heart rate (hazard ratio: 1.02, 95% CI: 1.00-1.05; P ¼ .03), thrombi<br> with mobile free edge (hazard ratio: 3.25, 95% CI: 1.25-8.44; P ¼ .01), hypoechoic thrombi (hazard ratio: 2.86, 95% CI: 1.10-7.42;<br> P ¼ .03), and mass peak antegrade velocity (Va) 10 cm/s (hazard ratio: 8.79, 95% CI: 2.00-38.5; P ¼ .004). By multivariable<br> analysis, thrombi with mobile free edge (hazard ratio: 3.54, 95% CI: 1.23-10.2; P ¼ .02), and mass peak Va 10 cm/s (hazard ratio:<br> 7.97, 95% CI: 1.60-39.6; P ¼ .01) retained statistical significance. Mass peak Va 10 cm/s predicted the composite end point with<br> 94% sensitivity and 85% specificity (area under the curve ¼ 0.86). In conclusion, PW-TDI allows objective prognostication of LV<br> thrombi embolic risk.</p>

<p><strong>Objectives: </strong>Reduced cardiac output (CO) has been considered crucial in symptoms' genesis in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Absolute value and temporal behaviour of O<sub>2</sub>-pulse (oxygen uptake/heart rate (VO<sub>2</sub>/HR)), and the VO<sub>2</sub>/work relationship during exercise reflect closely stroke volume (SV) and CO changes, respectively. We hypothesise that adding O<sub>2</sub>-pulse absolute value and kinetics, and VO<sub>2</sub>/work relationship to standard cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) could help identify more exercise-limited patients with HCM.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>CPETs were performed in 3 HCM dedicated clinical units. We retrospectively enrolled non-end-stage consecutive patients with HCM, grouped according to left ventricle outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) at rest or during Valsalva manoeuvre (72% of patients with LVOTO <30; 10% between 30 and 49 and 18% ≥50 mm Hg). We evaluated the CPET response in HCM focusing on parameters strongly associated with SV and CO, such as O<sub>2</sub>-pulse and VO<sub>2</sub>, respectively, considering their absolute values and temporal behaviour during exercise.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>We included 312 patients (70% males, age 49±18 years). Peak VO<sub>2</sub> (percentage of predicted), O<sub>2</sub>-pulse and ventilation to carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO<sub>2</sub>) slope did not change across LVOTO groups. Ninety-six (31%) patients with HCM presented an abnormal O<sub>2</sub>-pulse temporal behaviour, irrespective of LVOTO values. These patients showed lower peak systolic pressure, workload (106±45 vs 130±49 W), VO<sub>2</sub> (21.3±6.6 vs 24.1±7.7 mL/min/kg; 74%±17% vs 80%±20%) and O<sub>2</sub>-pulse (12 (9-14) vs 14 (11-17) mL/beat), with higher VE/VCO<sub>2</sub> slope (28 (25-31) vs 27 (24-31)) (p<0.005 for all). Only 2 patients had an abnormal VO<sub>2</sub>/work slope.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>None of the frequently used CPET parameters, either as absolute values or dynamic relationships, were associated with LVOTO. Differently, an abnormal temporal behaviour of O<sub>2</sub>-pulse during exercise, which is strongly related to inadequate SV increase, correlates with reduced functional capacity (peak and anaerobic threshold VO<sub>2</sub> and workload) and increased VE/VCO<sub>2</sub> slope, identifying more advanced disease irrespectively of LVOTO.</p>
Non-Invasive assessment of arterial stiffness: pulse wave velocity, pulse wave analysis and carotid cross sectional distensibility. Comparison between methods
<p>Background: The stiffening of large elastic arteries is currently estimated in research and clinical practice by propagative and non-propagative models, as well as parameters derived from aortic pulse waveform analysis. Methods: Common carotid compliance and distensibility were measured by simultaneously recording the diameter and pressure changes during the cardiac cycle. The aortic and upper arm arterial distensibility was estimated by measuring carotid–femoral and carotid–radial pulse wave velocity (PWV), respectively. The augmentation index and blood pressure amplification were derived from the analysis of central pulse waveforms, recorded by applanation tonometry directly from the common carotid artery. Results: 75 volunteers were enrolled in this study (50 females, average age 53.5 years). A significant inverse correlation was found between carotid distensibility and carotid–femoral PWV (r = −0.75; p < 0.001), augmentation index (r = −0.63; p < 0.001) and central pulse pressure (r = −0.59; p < 0.001). A strong correlation was found also between the total slope of the diameter/pressure rate carotid curves and aortic distensibility, quantified from the inverse of the square of carotid–femoral PWV (r = 0.67). No correlation was found between carotid distensibility and carotid–radial PWV. Conclusions: This study showed a close correlation between carotid–femoral PWV, evaluating aortic stiffness by using the propagative method, and local carotid cross-sectional distensibility.</p>

<p><strong>Metal-Oxide (MOx) electronic nose (e-nose) sensor recordings, for odour pulses of various concentration levels </strong></p> <p>This data is a subset of a larger, yet unpublished dataset - collected by the following authors: Dennler N., Drix D., Warner T., Rastogi R., van Schaik A., Schaefer A., Schmuker M.</p> <p> </p> <p>The custom-made electronic nose used to collect the data is a successor of the device described in Drix & Dennler et al. [1]. It comprises four Metal Oxide (MOx) gas sensors operated at a constant heater voltage, and . </p> <p>The odour stimuli were provided by a multi-channel odour delivery device that is described in detail by Ackels et al. [2]. It offers a high temporal fidelity, which is achieved by combining high-speed gas valves, flow controllers, as well as short and narrow gas pathways. </p> <p>The data collection comprises of recordings where odourant headspace samples were embedded in constant airflow and presented to the e-nose. Data of four different odourants were used: Ethyl Butyrate (EB), Eucalyptol (Eu), Isoamyl Acetate (IA), and 2 - Heptanone (2H). EB, Eu and IA gases were diluted in mineral oil at a ratio of 1 : 5, and 2H was diluted in a ratio of 1:50. The delivered odour concentration was varied by modulating the valve shutter duty cycle, ensuring a linear relationship between five different concentration levels (E.g. C5 = 5 x C1). Fluctuations in flow during gas presentations were minimized by careful calibration.</p> <p>The filenames consist of the timestamp (in processor time), the gas identity, and a concentration level between 1 and 5. </p> <p> </p> <p>[1] D.
