Langenheim Plant Species Data (1953) and Associated Resurvey Datasets (2014), Gunnison Basin, Colorado, USA
Quantitative plant abundance data were collected from the same 121 sites at two time periods separated by 65 years (1948-1952 and 2012-2014) in the Colorado Rocky Mountains to examine changes in plant community composition. The sites range in elevation from 2600m to 4100m. Approximately 30 sites were sampled from each of four habitat types: sagebrush (2528-3119m, n=27 sites), spruce-fir forest understory (3001-3520m, n=31 sites) , upland herb = montane meadow (3124-3850m, n=30 sites), and alpine (3549-4013m, n=33 sites). The earlier data set was collected by Jean H. Langenheim (1953, 1962) and consisted of counts of species occurrences along approximately 100m paced transects, noting species touching her boot tip every pace (n=100 sampled points per site). The later data set was collected by Stephanie D. Zorio (2015, 2016) consisting of counts of species occurrences every 1m along 300m transects (n=300 sampled points per site). The sites resurveyed by Zorio (2015, Zorio et al. 2016) were placed as close as possible to the original sites based on the written descriptions of Langenheim, but are only approximate. The GPS coordinates given for the resurveyed sites are the centerpoint of 2 perpendicular 150m transects, one across the slope and the other perpendicular to the slope. GPS coordinates for alpine sites along narrow ridges are the start and end points of three 100m transects along the ridge. Georeferenced localities and environmental site data are presented in Table 2: Lang Zorio Env Site Data. Langenheim’s original data were extracted from tables in her thesis (Langenheim 1953). These data omitted species that occurred in fewer than 14% of sites of a given habitat type (constancy). Species that occurred at very low frequencies (<1% per site) were only denoted as an x in the tables. Zorio converted these to frequencies of 0.5 for quantitative comparative purposes. This data set contains 157 species from 27 families across all sites and habitats. Species in seve
Locally verified evaporation data from a NOAA evaporation pan at USDA Jornada Experimental Range headquarters, southern New Mexico USA, 1953-1979
This data package contains locally verified monthly total pan evaporation data from a NOAA National Weather Service station located at the USDA Jornada Experimental Range headquarters in southern New Mexico, USA. The evaporation pan measurements commenced in 1953 and ended in 1979 when the instrument was decommissioned. Pan evaporation observations were made using standard U.S. climatological service instrumentation and procedures. The included data were verified and transcribed directly from records retrieved from NOAA in ~1995 and have since undergone quality control and assurance procedures different than those in place at NOAA. These data therefore differ from those directly downloadable from NOAA servers. There is no further data from this decommissioned instrument, so this dataset is now complete and data will no longer be updated here. All observations from this weather station have also undergone NOAA QA/QC procedures and those data are available by accessing the Jornada Experimental Range, NM US GHCN station through the National Climatic Data Center portal (https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/datasets/GSOM/stations/GHCND:USC00294426/detail - monthly pan evaporation data are available back to 1930, but there may be data issues prior to 1953).
A Land-use/Land Cover Classification of Baltimore City in 1953
Land-use and land cover classifications are typically created using automated methods to analyze modern, spatially explicit color aerial imagery. However, creating classifications from black and white historical aerial imagery presents a number of challenges that require a combination of more traditional, manual techniques and approaches. A georectified mosaic of 113 aerial images was digitized in ArcGIS to create a land-use/land cover classification. The analyzed area covered 700 km2 (270 mi2) including all of Baltimore City, and a portion of Baltimore County immediately surrounding the city. A combination of 8 land-use and land cover classes were used: Agriculture, Barren, Built (Other), Forest, Grass/Shrubland, Industrial, Residential, and Water. This geospatial data set captures an ecologically and socially important moment in the post-war history of the city. It can be used to examine relationships between property ownership and forest patch dynamics across time. These insights may help inform future environmental planning, conservation, management, and stewardship goals for Baltimore City forest patches, and other cities throughout the region.

ERA5-Land selected indicators daily aggregates for Africa, 1953
<p>This deposit contains NetCDF files with daily aggregates from Copernicus Era5-Land for eight selected indicators, covering Africa for 1953.</p> <p>Each file represents one indicator aggregation for one month of the year. Inside each NetCDF file, the layers contain the daily aggregates.</p> <p>For 2m dewpoint pressure, 10m u-component of wind, 10m v-component of wind, surface pressure, the mean function was used for aggregation. For total precipitation, the sum function was used for aggregation. For 2m temperature, the functions maximum, mean, and minimum were used for aggregation.</p>

Landslide inventory (1953-1996), Andrews Experimental Forest and Blue River Basin.
Landslide inventory (1953-1996), Andrews Experimental Forest and Blue River Basin. This layer is a combination of data from four landslide inventory efforts that have been conducted in the area beginning in the late 1960's. Data represent landslide occurrences between 1953 and 1996. Data are in the UTM coordinate system; zone 10, NAD27. The data table that describes the characteristics of the landslides inventoried in the following: Individual layers tied to inventories by Ted Dyrness, Fred Swanson, Dan Marion, and Matt Wallenstein were appended and linked to the shape file. This file is associated with the slideinv layer, which is a combination of data from four landslide inventory efforts that have been conducted in the area beginning in the late 1960's. Points have been screen digitized from field maps using streams, roads, contour lines, and harvest units as reference layers.
Georectified Mosaic of Aerial Images of Baltimore City in 1953
Landscape analyses are typically done using spatially explicit color aerial imagery. However, working with non-spatial black and white historical aerial photographs presents several challenges that require a combination of techniques and approaches. We analyzed 113 aerial images covering approx. 700 km2 (270 mi2) including all of Baltimore City, and a portion of Baltimore County surrounding the City. The images were taken between August 23rd 1952 and February 14th 1953. High-resolution scans were georeferenced and georectified against modern satellite imagery of the area and then combined to create a single raster mosaic. This process converted the images from a disparate set of photographs into a spatially explicit GIS data set that can be used to observe changes in land patches over time—and ultimately integrated with other long-term social, economic, and ecological data.
Elevation gradient plant species composition data for A1, B1, C1, D1, 1953 - 1996.
Plant species presence and abundance (Kooiman and Korb data) were recorded at four stands along an elevational gradient in the Front Range of Colorado. Each stand location was determined by Dr. John Marr. The Marr species data were recorded from at least 12 3ft x 3ft plots located in the corners of his 66ft x 66ft tree quadrats. Only species presence was recorded, not abundance. The Kooiman and Lindhart as well as the Korb data were collected from 50 85cm x 100cm plots which were systematically located within a sampling strip measuring 2m x 100m. Plots were located every two meters alternating left and right of the sampling strip. Species present in the strip but not in the plots were recorded by Kooiman as well as Korb. Species names in this data set are from Weber and Wittman 1996; the Marr and Kooiman datasets were updated using Weber and Wittman's list.
