Lake ice clearance and formation data for Green Lakes Valley, 1968 - ongoing.
Records were based on intermittent observation of the extent of ice cover on Silver Lake, Lake Albion, and Green Lakes 1-5, dependent on observers present for other reasons (or in some cases from photos or satellite data). Dates of freeze-up (formation), breakup (first melt or open water), and lake-ice clearance were recorded, along with visual estimates of percent ice cover at various dates prior to complete meltout in spring. The latter estimates are only included starting in 2019.
Daily rainfall series and rainfall erosivity in Mexico for three climatic normals (1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017)
As in many countries around the world, there are some issues in the Mexican rainfall series, such as missing values, short measurement periods, and series homogeneity (breaks due to station relocation and measurement mistakes), which further compound the challenge of using climate data. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop a complete and helpful rainfall series database by following an imputing and homogenization process of the rainfall series. This research has compiled and systematized a national dataset with daily rainfall and rainfall erosivity for three climatic normals CN (1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017). We have used the "climatol" package to fill the data. After, we calculated daily rainfall erosivity using a power law model. As a result, we obtained 1370, 1679, and 1683 rainfall series for the CNs 1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017, respectively. The median values of the rainfall erosivity for the three CNs were 3245, 3070, and 3327 MJ mm/ ha h yr, respectively. We are making this database available for public consultation for researchers and students, technical assistants, decision-makers, and others interested in environmental studies in Mexico.
IISD Experimental Lakes Area: Chemistry of LTER Lakes, 1968-2024
The IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) Chemistry of LTER Lakes data package provides lake chemistry data from five reference lakes in northwestern Ontario, Canada for the years 1968-2024. This data package includes both tabular data and metadata files. The chemistry data includes the analysis of physical, nutrient, biological, inorganic, and organic parameters for long-term ecological research across lakes 114, 224, 239, 373, and 442. The dataset contains a row for each parameter measured at a specific date, lake, and depth (integrated layer or profile level). Metadata in this data package include a table of location coordinates and record counts and a PDF information sheet. The table of coordinates and counts is useful to know where the lakes and specific sampling sites are located and as an overview of data availability per lake (Lake 239 has the longest and most consistent data record). The info sheet provides additional metadata details about the dataset, including background and uses of the datasets, a data dictionary, diagrams, descriptions of methods and instruments, and additional references. The info sheet also contains a table that lists chemical parameter names and metadata used in this EDI repository alongside their equivalencies in the DataStream repository to help understand differences in naming conventions between the two parallel repository data packages. This data package is ongoing—updates will be provided as data are collected from these lakes in subsequent years. If data are not present here for a specific IISD-ELA lake that you are interested in, please get in touch with us. The data in this chemistry data package on EDI are also published in parallel at the Lake Winnipeg DataStream repository (https://doi.org/10.25976/fq3n-8207). The differences between the two are: the formatting of data and metadata (particularly how integrated sample information is organized across columns, and the differing chemical parameter names and metadata explai
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Mirror Lake Ice Cover 1968 - ongoing
This data set reports ice on and ice off dates for Mirror Lake beginning in 1968 and continuing through the present. Mirror Lake is located within the Hubbard Brook valley in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and has been the subject of numerous limnological investigations since the early 1960s. These Mirror Lake data are part of the Hubbard Brook Watershed Ecosystem Record (HBWatER), a long-term record of weekly sampling of nine gaged watersheds at Hubbard Brook which includes the stream draining Mirror Lake. The collection and management of the long-term record was initiated in 1963 by Gene E. Likens, F. Herbert Bormann, Robert S. Pierce, and Noye M. Johnson. HBWatER is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and Jeff Merriam (USFS) and the dataset is curated and maintained by a team of researchers: Chris Solomon (Cary IES), Emily Bernhardt (Duke), Bill McDowell (UNH), Charley Driscoll (Syracuse U.), Keith Nislow (USFS), and Mark Green (Case Western). Current financial Support for HBWatER is provided by NSF LTREB # 2401760 and the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Lake level surveys in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1968-2025, ongoing)
This data package contains lake level measurements from multiple lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, collected seasonally as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) program. Measurements were obtained manually using optical leveling techniques relative to established local benchmarks. Locations include Lake Fryxell, Lake Hoare, and the east lobe of Lake Bonney in Taylor Valley; Lake Vanda and Don Juan Pond in Wright Valley; Lake Vida in Victoria Valley; Lake Miers in Miers Valley; and Lake House and Lake Joyce in Pearse Valley. These long-term data provide valuable context for understanding lake level dynamics and hydrologic change in this polar desert ecosystem.
IISD Experimental Lakes Area: Bathymetry Data Package, 1968-2025
The IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) bathymetry data package provides bathymetric data on IISD-ELA lakes in a variety of formats and degrees of processing. The data package has been organized into four parts: tabular, geospatial, maps, and additional metadata. Tabular data include cumulative and interval values for area and volume at specific depth ranges, summary statistics (perimeter, surface area, total volume, mean depth, and maximum depth), and metadata for the lakes (such as water level on date of survey and methods used to collect and process the data). Geospatial data are suitable for map-making and geospatial analysis. The geospatial folder includes raw coordinate data (CSV) and processed geospatial outputs: contour lines (geodatabase and geopackage), lake polygons (geodatabase and geopackage), and raster DEMs (geodatabase and TIFF). Maps are provided in PDF format in black and white or colour. Where current maps are not available, historical maps have been provided, which are black and white scans. Additional metadata files include the Info Sheet PDF, which provides details for interpreting column names and understanding surveying and processing methods. A materials overview CSV table is provided, outlining which data types are available for each lake. A lake polygon metadata CSV table specifies which satellite imagery providers and dates were used to refine lake polygon outlines. The data package is ongoing - updated data will be provided as more lakes are surveyed and data processed. If current data do not exist for the lake you are interested in, please get in touch with us - we may be able to add a survey of that lake to our bathymetry survey schedule.
Stream chemistry concentrations and fluxes using proportional sampling in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 1968 to present
Stream chemistry sampling and analysis was initiated at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in 1968 in two small watersheds (Watersheds 9,10). Sampling has expanded as additional paired watershed studies (Watersheds 1, 2, 6, 7, 8) and monitoring (Mack, Lookout Cr) were initiated over time. Water samples are collected proportionally to streamflow as a function of stage height and composited at each stream gauging site. Composite sample periods are generally three weeks and 3 one-week samples are commonly composited in the lab before analysis. Water samples are analyzed at the Cooperative Chemical Analytical Lab (CCAL) (http://www.ccal.oregonstate.edu/ ). Concentrations of analytes include dissolved and particulate nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, as well pH, conductivity, suspended sediment, and full suite of cations and anions. Monthly and annual mean concentrations are calculated by weighting 3-week periods by streamflow. Fluxes are calculated using concentrations and flow. The original objective was to examine the nutrient budgets for small watersheds and to evaluate changes in average concentrations and fluxes following timber harvest in comparison with unharvested reference watersheds. This study is conducted in conjunction with Andrew's precipitation chemistry (CP002) and the U.S. National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP).

Air Temperature, Soil Temperature, Precipitation, Snow Depth at Long Term Tree Growth Sites; 1968-Present : Weekly
Part of the Long Term Tree Growth study. This dataset is an accumulation of various manual measurements made on a weekly to monthly basis. It originally included snow stakes, rain buckets, max/min thermometers and a series of soil temperature sensors. Over the years equipment has changed. The soil temperature sensors exceeded their field life during the 1990's and were dropped from the study. In 2001 logging air temperature and relative humidity sensors were installed and those measurements were discontinued. In 2002 logging rain gauges were installed to replace the manual buckets. Both styles were during that growing season and the manual buckets were removed before the 2003 field season. All that remains active in this dataset are the snow stake measurements.
Standardized ring-width chronologies of thinleaf alder growth along the Tanana River floodplains spanning 1968-2006.
This dataset contains landscape level and site level standardized ring-width chronologies (1968-2006) of thinleaf alder growth along the Tanana River floodplains. The raw tree ring-width series from each alder disk was individually detrended to remove age-related growth trends. The chronologies represent the high-frequency variation in ring-width to be analyzed at the inter-annual time scale.
