Soil moisture and soil temperature from Benchmark Stations at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 1987 to present

A three-level hydro-climatological network for data monitoring was established in 1994. The networks at each level are nested to form a coordinated program of data acquisition and measurement. A future vision of linking the benchmark meteorological stations with regional weather stations to expand the future scope of studies was also considered in designing this network. The first-level in this top-down approach consists of Benchmark Meteorological Stations (BMS) and Benchmark Stream Stations. The BMS are designed to represent the environment across the Andrews. These stations are intended to provide complete, long-term, high temporal resolution, meso-scale hydroclimatological data. The location of the BMS network is based on factors such as elevation, aspect, vegetation gradients, and accessibility. Collected meteorological parameters are generally standardized across the BMS as well as methods and instrumentation. Secondary Meteorological Stations also follow standardized methods and serve similar purposes but are somewhat limited in meteorological parameters collected. The Primary Meteorological Station (PRIMET), Central Meteorological Station (CENMET), Upper Lookout Meteorological Station (UPLMET), and Vanilla Leaf Meteorological Station (VANMET) are the four Benchmark Stations, Climatic Station at Watershed 2 (CS2MET) and the Hi-15 Meteorological Station (H15MET) are Secondary Stations. These soil parameters were previously part of database code MS001, but were separated out into their own database in 2024.

Aquatic Vertebrate Population Study in Mack Creek, Andrews Experimental Forest, 1987 to present

Populations of Coastal Cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii) in two standard reaches of Mack Creek in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest have been monitored since 1987. Monitoring of Coastal Giant Salamanders, Dicamptodon tenebrosus began in 1993. The two standard reaches are in a section of clearcut forest (ca. 1963) and an upstream 500 year old coniferous forest. Sub-reaches are sampled with 2-pass electrofishing, and all captured vertebrates are measured and weighed. Additionally, a set of channel measurements are taken with each sampling. This study constitutes one of the longest continuous records of salmonid populations on record.

Lithic raw data for Sheppard's (1987) thesis on the Capsian

<div> <div> <div> <p>This is a collection of six lithic raw data spreadsheets created in the course of Peter Sheppard&rsquo;s doctoral project on the prehistoric tradition of Northwest Africa known as the Capsian. Sheppard&rsquo;s project investigated technological and stylistic variation in Capsian lithics. The spreadsheets provided here contain about 507,000 observations collected on some 20,100 artefacts (blanks, cores, burins, backed bladelets, and geometric microliths) from 16 sites. We recovered these data uncorrupted, byte-for-byte from a 40-year-old tape. In the provided PDF document, we restate with additional clarifications the data definitions from Sheppard (1987). We also detail the steps we took to transform the files found on the tape into usable data spreadsheets.</p> </div> </div> </div>

Landscape Ecosystem Classification Soils and Vegetation Plots Data at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, Michigan from 1987 to 2015 remeasurements

Landscape ecosystems are a means of understanding the spatial patterns of and the functional interrelationships in forest ecosystems. Landscape ecosystem research is a multifactor, holistic approach to identifying, classifying, describing, and mapping terrain ecosystems. Abiotic and biotic factors are integrated in the field to distinguish repeating units similar in ecological structure and function. Landscape ecosystems are identified by simultaneous integration of physiographic, soil, and vegetation information. The more stable components--physiography and soil--largely determine local climate, and water and nutrient relations, and thus the interrelationships of physiography and soil form the foundation of a landscape ecosystem classification. Vegetation is seen as a phytometer that integrates the many abiotic factors and their interactions, and therefore reflects differences in ecosystem structure and function. When the three main ecosystem factors are analyzed simultaneously, one can perceive interrelationships that result in ecologically meaningful differences among segments of the ecosphere. Landscape ecosystems are spatial; they are volumetric, multi-dimensional segments of earth, whose components include soil, water, atmosphere, solar radiation, and biota. These segments can be identified, classified, described, and mapped at various scales. From the years of 1988 to 2001, various graduate students of Burton V. Barnes completed their masters thesis and dissertations in this pursuit. The attached data set is a culmination of these individual work. Each plot has measurements at various scales within the 10 by 30 meet plot. A stratified random design was used to locate plot locations. The random design was stratified by major and minor landforms in the region. All trees within the plot where identified and dbh was measured. All individual shrubs where identified and abundance was counted within the entire plot. Soils pits locations for each plot where selected

Density and cover of winter annual plants in three harvester ant habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1987

This dataset contains plant cover and density data collected in three harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex rugosus) nesting habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 1987. The purpose of this investigation was to answer three general questions: 1. How does the modification of soil properties and the ratios of resources (e.g., water-N) by ants alter species assemblages of winter annual plants at the edge of the ant nests? 2. How does the "spring cleaning", clipping, predation or herbivory by ants affect success of the winter annual plants at the edge of ant nests? 3. Are there significant differences in the floristic assemblage and belowground standing crop (root biomass) between the edge of ant nest and the surrounding unaffected soils? Variables included in the dataset include density and cover of all winter annual plants measured at regular intervals between January and May of 1987. Density is expressed as the number of individuals of a species per square meter. The cover of each species was calculated as the area covered by a perpendicular (not vertical) projection of its aerial parts onto the ground surface and expressed in covered area (cm squared) per square meter. This study was completed in 1987.

Soil nutrients sampled in and around harvester ant nests in three habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1987

This dataset contains soil nutrient content measurements from harvester ant nests and reference soils in three nesting habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 1987. Five ant nests and paired (non-nest) reference soils were sampled in three study locations. This dataset contains chemical analyses for the soil samples collected for each of the three sites, including total nitrogen, (ammonium, nitrate), inorganic phosphorus, and exchangeable cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+). Also included is below ground biomass from five ant nests for each of the three sites. This study was completed in 1987.

High-frequency, hourly, and daily measurements from Lake Hoare Meteorological Station (HOEM), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1987-2025, ongoing)

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research program, a spatially distributed, long-term climate monitoring network was established across the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, consisting of fourteen research-grade weather stations that continuously measure a standard suite of environmental parameters. Ecosystem processes in this region are strongly regulated by climatic drivers that exhibit high variability across both time and space, making accurate measurement of environmental variables at high temporal and spatial resolution essential to understanding the biophysical dynamics of this polar desert ecosystem. This data package includes measurements from the Lake Hoare Meteorological Station (HOEM), which was established in 1987 on an island in the middle of Lake Hoare in the Hoare Basin of Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Parameters include air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, photosynthetically active radiation, incoming and outgoing shortwave radiation, wind speed and direction, surface distance, as well as soil bulk electrical conductivity, dielectric permittivity, temperature, and volumetric water content. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data. Since there is no universally accepted standard for handling gaps in time-series data, users are encouraged to work with the high-frequency data and establish their own criteria for acceptable data completeness to minimize any potential bias.

WDNR Yahara Lakes Fisheries: Fish Lengths and Weights 1987-1998

These data were collected by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) from 1987-1998. Most of these data (1987-1993) precede 1995, the year that the University of Wisconsin NTL-LTER program took over sampling of the Yahara Lakes. However, WDNR data collected from 1997-1998 (unrelated to LTER sampling) is also included. In 1987 a joint project by the WDNR and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Center for Limnology (CFL) was initiated on Lake Mendota. The project involved biomanipulation of fish communities within the lake, which was acheived by stocking game fish species (northern pike and walleye). The goal was to induce a trophic cascade that would improve the water clarity of Lake Mendota. See Lathrop et al. 2002. Stocking piscivores to improve fishing and water clarity: a synthesis of the Lake Mendota biomanipulation project. Freshwater Biology 47, 2410-2424. In collecting these data, the objective was to gather population data and monitor populations to track the progress of the biomanipulation. The data is dominated by an assesssment of the game fishery in Lake Mendota, however other Yahara Lakes and non-game fish species are also represented. A combination of gear types was used to gather the population data including boom shocking, fyke netting, mini-fyke netting, seining, and gill netting. Not every sampling year includes length and weight data from all gear types. The WDNR also carried out randomized, access-point creel surveys to estimate fishing pressure, catch rates, harvest, and exploitation rates. Five data files each include length-weight data, and are organized by the type of gear or method which was used to collect the data: 1) fyke, mini-fyke, and seine netting 2) boom shocking 3) gill netting (1993 only) 4)walleye age as determined by scale and spine analysis (1987 only), and 5) creel survey. The final data file contains creel survey information: number of anglers fishing the shoreline, and number of anglers that started and complete

Aquatic macrophyte, snail, and crayfish abundance and richness data for ten lakes in Vilas County, WI, USA, 1987-2020

Data accompanying the paper Szydlowski et al. "Macrophyte and snail community responses to 30 years of population declines of invasive rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus)." Macrophytes and snails were sampled in ten lakes in Vilas County, Wisconsin, USA during summer sampling events in 1987, 2002, 2011, and 2020. Lakes had varying levels of invasion by F. rusticus, which affected measures of macrophytes and snails. Macrophytes were sampled using a point-intercept transect method and snails were sampled using different sampler types which were dependent on substrate. Macrophytes were sampled at 6-14 sites per lake and snails were sampled at 16-31 sites per lake. Crayfish were regularly sampled at either 24 or 36 sites per lake between 1987 and 2020. Overall, this dataset provides abundance and richness data for over 25 species of snails and over 40 species of macrophytes in 10 north temperate lakes.

ERA5-Land selected indicators daily aggregates for Africa, 1987

<p>This deposit contains NetCDF files with daily aggregates from Copernicus Era5-Land for eight selected indicators, covering Africa for 1987.</p> <p>Each file represents one indicator aggregation for one month of the year. Inside each NetCDF file, the layers contain the daily aggregates.</p> <p>For 2m dewpoint pressure, 10m u-component of wind, 10m v-component of wind, surface pressure, the mean function was used for aggregation. For total precipitation, the sum function was used for aggregation. For 2m temperature, the functions maximum, mean, and minimum were used for aggregation.</p> <p>Those files were created using the <a href="https://github.com/ErikKusch/KrigR">KrigR</a> package.</p>

Herbarium specimen image of Pseudotaxiphyllum elegans Iwatsuki, 1987, part of the collection of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

Part of a training dataset of scanned herbarium specimens. The data paper and a summary landing page will be published on Zenodo as it gets published.<br><br>Content of this deposition:<br><br>- A JSON-LD datafile listing the label data associated with this herbarium specimen. The Darwin and Dublin Core data standards are used for most values.<br>- A JPEG image file of the scanned herbarium sheet.<br>- A lossless TIFF image from which the JPEG image has been derived.<br>- Two PNG files containing segmented image overlays of the scanned herbarium sheet. The _all extension indicates that all labels, color charts and pieces of text have received a different color against a black background color. The _sel extension indicates that these elements are white if they're barcode labels, yellow if they're color charts and red if they're anything else.
