Chronic Nitrogen Amendment Experiment at Harvard Forest since 1988

The purpose of this study is to increase our understanding of ecosystem nitrogen dynamics in response to elevated nitrogen inputs. With atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the Northeastern United States currently at 10 to 20 times above historic background levels, it is possible that excessive nitrogen inputs could saturate the retention capacity of a forest ecosystem. Potential effects of nitrogen saturation include increased nitrate leaching and simultaneous base cation losses, soil acidification, altered fluxes of trace gases and forest decline. Two adjacent stands were chosen for the study: an even-aged red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) stand planted in 1926 and a 50-year-old mixed hardwood stand that had regenerated naturally after clearcutting in approximately 1945. The hardwood stand is dominated by black and red oak (Quercus velutina Lam.; Q. rubra L.) with significant amounts of black birch (Betula lenta L.), red maple (Acer rubrum L.) and American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.). The dominant soil types are stony- to sandy-loams formed from glacial till, and are classified as Typic Dystrochrepts of the Canton or Montauk series. Four treated plots were established within each stand: control, low N, low N plus sulfur (N+S) and high N. Each plot measures 30 x 30 meters (0.09 ha) and is divided into thirty-six 5 x 5 m subplots.

Little Rock Lake Experiment at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Zooplankton length 1988 - 1998

The Little Rock Acidification Experiment was a joint project involving the USEPA (Duluth Lab), University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, University of Wisconsin-Superior, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Little Rock Lake is a bi-lobed lake in Vilas County, Wisconsin, USA. In 1983 the lake was divided in half by an impermeable curtain and from 1984-1989 the northern basin of the lake was acidified with sulfuric acid in three two-year stages. The target pHs for 1984-5, 1986-7, and 1988-9 were 5.7, 5.2, and 4.7, respectively. Starting in 1990 the lake was allowed to recover naturally with the curtain still in place. Data were collected through 2000. The main objective was to understand the population, community, and ecosystem responses to whole-lake acidification. Funding for this project was provided by the USEPA and NSF. Zooplankton samples are collected from the treatment and reference basins of Little Rock Lake at at two to nine depths using a 30L Schindler Patalas trap (53um mesh). Zooplankton samples are preserved in buffered formalin and archived. Data are summed over sex and stage and integrated volumetrically over the water column to provide a lake-wide estimate of average length of organisms for each species.

City of Seattle, Seattle Public Utilities, Delta Plant Communities 1988-2007, Cedar River Municipal Watershed, King County, WA

Seattle Public Utilities manages the Cedar River Municipal Watershed and reservoir, Chester Morse Lake, to provide drinking water for 1.6 million residents in the greater Seattle area. The Cedar and Rex rivers are the two largest tributaries to Chester Morse Lake and flow over broad, low-gradient deltas. The deltas have mostly fine sediments, sinuous low-flow channels, and an extensive wetland complex with aquatic, herbaceous, shrub, and forest components. Delta plant communities were mapped in 1988, 1996, and 2007 using aerial photography. Plant communities were ground-truthed and boundaries and classification of polygons were corrected where errors were evident. Plant communities were classified into major structural classes, including herbaceous, shrub, deciduous forest, mixed deciduous/conifer forest, and conifer forest. A system of permanent plots was established on the Cedar and Rex river deltas and measured in 1988, 1996, and 2007. Transects comprised of sample plots every 25 meters were surveyed for herbaceous and shrub cover. An additional transect was established in the floodplain of the Cedar River through mixed deciduous and conifer forest to measure tree diameter at breast height and species. This package is complete, and the data were analyzed to evaluate the potential for future adverse impacts to delta plant communities resulting from changes to the reservoir operating regime.

Daily rainfall series and rainfall erosivity in Mexico for three climatic normals (1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017)

As in many countries around the world, there are some issues in the Mexican rainfall series, such as missing values, short measurement periods, and series homogeneity (breaks due to station relocation and measurement mistakes), which further compound the challenge of using climate data. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop a complete and helpful rainfall series database by following an imputing and homogenization process of the rainfall series. This research has compiled and systematized a national dataset with daily rainfall and rainfall erosivity for three climatic normals CN (1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017). We have used the "climatol" package to fill the data. After, we calculated daily rainfall erosivity using a power law model. As a result, we obtained 1370, 1679, and 1683 rainfall series for the CNs 1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017, respectively. The median values of the rainfall erosivity for the three CNs were 3245, 3070, and 3327 MJ mm/ ha h yr, respectively. We are making this database available for public consultation for researchers and students, technical assistants, decision-makers, and others interested in environmental studies in Mexico.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Evaporation measurements at Core Sites from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska

This study is a survey of the vegetation of the 35 control sites in Bonanza Creek LTER. The 35 sites represent replicates each of six successional stages of primary succession on the floodplain of the Tanana River and four stages of succession uplandsas well as a few recently burned sites. Data include percent cover of all species and count based on twenty 1 m2 or 4 m2 plots. Plots in young stages of succession were remeasured every 1 to 2 years; those in older stages every 3 to 5 years. Some information on biomass in these stages is available. Although most sites were established in 1988 some sites have vegetation plots that have been sampled periodically since 1965. 2009 was the last year of sampling using visual estimates of percent cover. In 2007 a new point framing system was developed and is now used for collecting vegetation data from these sites.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Pyranometer (PYR) Measurements from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest and the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed near Fairbanks, Alaska

The pyranometers measure the energy flux density of global sun plus sky radiation across a broad band from 280 to 2800 nm. The sensor consists of a silicon photodiode which does not have an equal spectral response across the band. However, this does not cause serious error for measurements of solar radiation, provided the spectral distribution is not altered, such as within plant canopies. Winter measurements may be inaccurate due to snow cover.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) Measurements from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska

In 1993, Eppley total UV radiometers (TUVR) were installed at each climate station on 21 April at LTER1 and 5 May at LTER2. These radiometers consist of a Weston selenium barrier-layer photoelectric cell with a sealed-in quartz window, a bandpass filter to restrict the wavelength response of the photcell to the designed range (295-385 nm), and a diffusing disc of Virgin Teflon to reduce the light intensity at the filtered photocell and also to improve the adherence of the instrument to the Lambert cosine law. The disc is nearly uniform diffusing over the wavelength range of interest, as well as geometrically within the system. The terminals of the photocell are connected through a precision resistor and the signal measured as a voltage drop across the resistor. Winter measurements may be inaccurate due to snow cover.
