Accessibility Indicators to services at EU scale - 1km grid indicators

This archive makes available accessibility indicators at EU scale from populated 1km EU grid to towns and cities at EU scale (512 million travel time by car calculated between origins and destinations). It follows a reproducible, transparent and updatable framework. It uses only open source and free routing engines (OSRM), based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) network. This routing engine makes possible the creation of travel time indicators for a large set of origins and destinations.

The EU towns and cities layer has been recently made available and named by the European Commission. This layer is based on a common methodology for all Europe. Within GRANULAR activities, we consider the towns and cities layer as a proxy to discuss on little and medium commercial centralities in Europe.

This methodological framework, implemented with open source solutions (data and code) only and documented in a reproducible way in R notebooks, could be easily extended to other origins and destinations, if a relevant layer will be identified in the future.

Based on travel time matrix, it is possible to compute a large set of indicators. This archive (see readme at the root folder) describes the input data used, summarises the data processing and provide information and metadata on output indicators created at 1km grid cells.

All the output data is also available.

Global 1km Land Surface Parameters for Kilometer-Scale Earth System Modeling (SAI_2016_2020)

Earth system models (ESMs) are progressively advancing towards the kilometer scale (k-scale). However, the surface parameters for Land Surface Models (LSMs) within ESMs running at the k-scale are typically derived from coarse resolution and outdated datasets. This study aims to develop a new set of global land surface parameters with a resolution of 1 km for multiple years from 2001 to 2020, utilizing the latest and most accurate available datasets. Specifically, the datasets consist of parameters related to land use and land cover, vegetation, soil, and topography. Differences between the newly developed 1k land surface parameters and conventional parameters emphasize their potential for higher accuracy due to the incorporation of the most advanced and latest data sources. To demonstrate the capability of these new parameters, we conducted 1 km resolution simulations using the E3SM Land Model version 2 (ELM2) over the contiguous United States. Our results demonstrate that land surface parameters contribute to significant spatial heterogeneity in ELM2 simulations of soil moisture, latent heat, emitted longwave radiation, and absorbed shortwave radiation. On average, about 31% to 54% of spatial information is lost by upscaling the 1 km ELM2 simulations to a 12 km resolution. Using eXplainable Machine Learning (XML) methods, the influential factors driving the spatial variability and spatial information loss of ELM2 simulations were identified, highlighting the substantial impact of the spatial variability and information loss of various land surface parameters, as well as the mean climate conditions. The comparison against four benchmark datasets indicates that ELM generally performs well in simulating soil moisture and surface energy fluxes. The new land surface parameters are tailored to meet the emerging needs of k-scale LSMs and ESMs modeling with significant implications for advancing our understanding of water, carbon, and energy cycles under global change.

This data repository is linked to https://zenodo.org/records/10815170

High-resolution IMERG satellite precipitation data data (1km) in Iberia Peninsula

In summary, the SMPD method with the use of surface water balance principle has a solider physical basis than previous downscaling methods. Through introducing SSM as an auxiliary variable, the impact of inherent bias in satellite estimates on the downscaled results can be moderately reduced compared to the conventional statistical method. The validation with rain gauge data highlights the importance of SSM as a fully independent source of information that can be effectively used for downscaling coarse-resolution precipitation at a daily scale, which is rarely conducted in current related studies.

He, K., Zhao, W., Brocca, L., and Quintana-Seguí, P.: SMPD: a soil moisture-based precipitation downscaling method for high-resolution daily satellite precipitation estimation, Hydrol. The Adult Adansonia digitata L. (baobab tree) distribution map derived from very high resolution satelite imagery for 2010s across the Sahel at 1km resolution

The baobab tree (Adansonia digitata L.) is an integral part of rural livelihoods throughout the African continent. However, the combined effects of climate change and increasing global demand for baobab products are currently exerting pressure on the sustainable utilization of these resources. Here we employ sub-meter resolution satellite imagery to identify nearly 3 million baobab trees in the Sahel, a dryland region of 1.5 million km2. This achievement is considered an essential step towards improving valuable woody species' management and monitoring system. The map's overall underestimate bias is 0.27. To prevent mismanagement of this specific tree species, we aggregated every single adult baobab tree map to 1 × 1 km grids. We also classified the baobab trees using the tree crown diameters( small: 3-9m; medium 9m-13m; large: >13m). The baobab tree count map is also available for these three different size classes.

Spatial patterns of uncertainty in climate exposure metrics for North America at 1km resolution

The data provided below represents the degree of uncertainty or variation between 8 individual general circulation models (GCM) for three metrics commonly used to assess the intensity of exposure to climate change. The three exposure metrics (forward and backward climatic velocity and local climatic dissimilarity) were calculated based on the first two principal components (PC) scores derived from 11 different climate variables. Frameworks and heuristics supporting climate adaptation for conservation often rely on projections of climate change or climate exposure. However, projections of climate change vary among alternative GCM outputs, different emissions scenarios, and different future time periods. The potential for these model predictions to vary geographically presents a source of uncertainty in assigning climate-informed conservation strategies to landscapes. Regions with high agreement among predictions could be more confidently assigned a climate-informed strategy, whereas regions with less agreement among predictions may require a more cautious approach. More information on the data can be found at https://adaptwest.databasin.org/pages/uncertainty-climate-metrics.

The existing validation results show that the CHEQ dataset was highly consistent with the environmental index (EI) provided by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China. The CHEQ fills the research gap in the field of EEQ monitoring in China.
