Warm Core Ring Trajectories in the Northwest Atlantic Slope Sea (2000-2010)

<p>This dataset consists of weekly trajectory information of Gulf Stream Warm Core Rings from 2000-2010. This work builds upon Silver et al. (2022a) (&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6436380">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6436380</a>) which contained Warm Core Ring trajectory information from 2011 to 2020. Combining the two datasets a total of 21 years of weekly Warm Core Ring trajectories can be obtained.&nbsp;An example of how to use such a dataset can be found in Silver et al. (2022b).</p> <p>The format of the dataset is similar to that of&nbsp;&nbsp;Silver et al. (2022a), and the following description is adapted from their dataset. This dataset is comprised of individual files containing each ring&rsquo;s weekly center location and its area for 374 WCRs present between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2010. Each Warm Core Ring is identified by a unique alphanumeric code &#39;WEyyyymmddA&#39;, where &#39;WE&#39; represents a Warm Eddy (as identified in the analysis charts); &#39;yyyymmdd&#39; is the year, month and day of formation; and the last character &#39;A&#39; represents the sequential sighting of the eddies in a particular year. Continuity of a ring which passes from one year to the next is maintained by the same character in the first sighting.&nbsp;&nbsp;For example, the first ring in 2002 having a trailing alphabet of &#39;F&#39; indicates that five rings were carried over from 2001 which were still observed on January 1, 2002. Each ring has its own netCDF (.nc) filename following its alphanumeric code. Each file contains 4 variables, &ldquo;Lon&rdquo;- the ring center&rsquo;s weekly longitude, &ldquo;Lat&rdquo;- the ring center&rsquo;s weekly latitude, &ldquo;Area&rdquo; - the rings weekly size in km<sup>2</sup>, and &ldquo;Date&rdquo; in days - representing the days since Jan 01, 0000.&nbsp;</p> <p>The process of creating the WCR tracking dataset follows the same methodology of the previously generated WCR census (Gangopadhyay et al., 2019, 2020). The Jenifer Clark&rsquo;s Gulf Stream Charts used to create this dataset are 2-3 times a week from 2000-2010. Thus, we used approximately 1560 Charts for the 10 years of analysis. All of these charts were reanalyzed between 75&deg; and 55&deg;W using QGIS 2.18.16 (2016) and geo-referenced on a WGS84 coordinate system (Decker, 1986).&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Silver, A., Gangopadhyay, A, &amp; Gawarkiewicz, G. Average cover crop adoption rates in the U.S. Midwest in 2000-2010 and 2011-2021

<p>Cover crops have critical significance for agroecosystem sustainability and have long been promoted in the U.S. Midwest. Knowledge of the variations of cover cropping and the impacts of government policies remains very limited. We developed an accurate and cost-effective approach utilizing multi-source satellite fusion data, environmental variables, and machine learning to quantify cover cropping in corn and soybean fields from 2000 to 2021 in the U.S. Midwest. We found that cover crop adoption in most counties has significantly increased in the recent 11 years from 2011 to 2021. The adoption percentage of 2021 is 3.3 times that of 2011, which was highly correlated to the increased funding for federal and state conservation programs. However, the percentage of cover crop adoption is still low (7.2%).  The averaged county-level cover crop adoption rates in 2000-2010 and 2011-2021 are publicly available on Dryad.</p>

Arctic Vegetation Plots at Atqasuk, Alaska, 1975, 2000, and 2010

This data set provides vegetation species abundance data collected in 1975 from 60 sites on the Arctic Coastal Plain near Atqasuk, Alaska, as well as environmental and species data for 31 of the sites that were revisited in 2000 and 2010. The study sites are located on Arctic tundra near the Meade River, about 60 miles southwest of Barrow. Data includes baseline plot information for vegetation and site factors for the study plots subjectively located in 9 plant communities. Specific attributes include: site characteristics such as altitude, slope, aspect, and topographic position; soil pH and organic layer depth; and dominant plant communities. This product brings together for easy reference all of the available information collected from the plots that has been used for the classification, mapping, and analysis of geo-botanical factors at the Atqasuk research sites and across Alaska.

West Africa Coastal Vulnerability Mapping: GPW Version 4 Population Growth, Preliminary Release 1, 2000-2010

The West Africa Coastal Vulnerability Mapping: GPW Version 4 Population Growth, Preliminary Release 1, 2000-2010, represents positive or negative growth in the number of persons per grid cell, and was calculated by subtracting an unreleased working version of the Gridded Population of the World (GPW), Version 4, year 2000 population count raster for the West Africa region from an unreleased working version of the GPWv4 year 2010 population count raster and cropping the result to within 200 kilometers of the coast. GPW provides globally consistent and spatially explicit human population information and data for use in research, policy making, and communications. This is a gridded (raster) data product that renders global population data at the scale and extent needed to demonstrate the spatial relationship of human populations and the environment globally. The gridded data set is constructed from national or subnational input Units (usually administrative Units) of varying resolutions. The native grid cell resolution of GPWv4 is 30 arc-second, or ~1 km at the equator.
