MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Temperature and Salinity subset of moorings FOR01, FOR04 and FOR05 from 2005-2014

This dataset is derived as a subset from three separate much larger more complex datasets: knb-lter-mcr.30, knb-lter-mcr.31, and knb-lter-mcr.32. Sampling began in 2005 and continues (as of 2019) for those time series. This dataset knb-lter-mcr.1040 was an experimental workflow that ended with 2014 data. Moored instrumentation measures water temperature and salinity year-round on the forereef of Moorea, French Polynesia at sites FOR01, FOR04 and FOR05 on the forereef of the north, east, and west shores, respectively. Data are interpolated onto a 20 minute grid. The two moored CTD packages are located approximately 5 and 14 meters above the bottom, and there are up to 5 additional temperature thermistors spaced vertically along the mooring line. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2018). This work represents a contribution of the Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) LTER Site.

Fish and crayfish density and count data for Peeks Creek, Macon County, NC, USA 2005-2014, 2019, and 2022 following a catastrophic debris flow, as well as six reference streams

We followed the process of recovery of the fish and crayfish assemblage in Peeks Creek, a high-gradient second order stream in the Little Tennessee River watershed of North Carolina, after a debris flow devastated the channel and its riparian zone. After 15 years, the fish assemblage had recovered, and the channel and riparian zone had stabilized. Of the three major components of the fish assemblage, Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum)), a strong swimmer, reappeared in year 1. Longnose Dace (Rhinichthys cataractae (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes)) reappeared in year 3. Mottled Sculpin (Cottus bairdii Girard), a weak swimmer, did not become established until year 6 and only resumed expected abundance in year 9. Appalachian Brook Crayfish (Cambarus bartonii cavatus Hay) numbers recovered quickly, though only one individual was found the year following the debris flow. Unassisted natural recovery occurred after a costly engineered restoration project had been rejected and arguably represents the preferable solution. However, recovery of the fish assemblage may not have been achieved if the stream flowed directly into an impoundment or low gradient river that lacked the source of species for recolonization, or if the stream had been located above a barrier to upstream movement.

Gunnison's Prairie Dog Relocation Project: Population Dynamics within Grasslands at the Sevilleta National Widlife Refuge, New Mexico (2005-2014)

The Sevilleta Gunnison’s Prairie Dog (Cynomys gunnisoni) Restoration project examines keystone consumer (herbivore) effects on grassland in concert with ecological restoration of a “species of greatest conservation need in New Mexico” (NMGandF Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy, 2007). SevLTER partners directly with Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico Game and Fish, USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station and non-profit Prairie Dog Pals on this ambitious effort to re-establish Gunnison’s prairie dogs to blue grama dominated (Bouteloua gracilis) Great Plains grassland at the foothills of the Los Pinos Mountains on Sevilleta. While engaged in wildlife management aimed at translocation of approximately 3000 individual prairie dogs, ultimately establishing 5-6 colonies over a 500 ha area, SevLTER is focusing resources on monitoring population dynamics of reintroduced prairie dogs and their effects on vegetation production and diversity, soil disturbance and grasshopper community composition. In this experiment, prairie dogs act as the treatment on a grassland site where the species was extirpated 40 years ago. The long term nature of the project lies in the course of re-establishing prairie dogs combined with the ultimate research goal of describing the functional role of Gunnison’s prairie dogs in an arid grassland ecosystem: first we are challenged to develop and document an economical and efficient management strategy which maximizes reintroduction success and colony survival; second we are tasked with monitoring prairie dog dynamics and their effects on the grassland throughout re-establishment and into a future state, when presumably management intervention will have subsided and we characterize the ecosystem as ‘restored’ – both in the face of highly variable abiotic inputs such as precipitation and temperature and biotic impacts such as predation.

Current trends in scientific research on global warming: A bibliometric analysis (2005-2014)

<p>This dataset was created in the context of the project: &quot; Current trends in scientific research on global warming: A bibliometric analysis (2005-2014)&quot;.</p> <p>---</p> <p>Global warming is a topic of increasing public importance, but there have not been published scientometric studies on this topic. The objective of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the scientific knowledge in global warming and his effect, as well as to investigate its evolution through the published papers included in Web of Science database. Items under study were collected from Web of Science database from Thomson Reuters. A bibliometric and social network analyses was performed to obtain indicators of scientific productivity, impact and collaboration between researchers, institutions and countries. A subject analysis was also carried out taking into account the key words assigned to papers and subject areas of journals. 1,672 articles were analysed since 2005 until 2014. The most productive journals were Journal of Climate (n=95) and Geophysical Resarch Letters (n=78). The most frequent keywords have been Climate Change&nbsp; (n=722), Model (n=216) and Temperature (n=196). The network of collaboration between countries shows the central position of the United States, together with other leading countries such as United Kingdom, Germany, France and Peoples Republic of China. The research on global warming had grown steadily during the last decade. A vast amount of journals from several subject areas publishes the papers on the topic, including journals of general purpose with high impact factor. Almost all the countries have USA as the main country with which one collaborates. LiDAR-Derived Aboveground Biomass and Uncertainty for California Forests, 2005-2014

This dataset provides estimates of aboveground biomass and spatially explicit uncertainty from 53 airborne LiDAR surveys of locations throughout California between 2005 and 2014. Aboveground biomass was estimated by performing individual tree crown detection and applying a customized "remote sensing aware" allometric equation to these individual trees. Aboveground biomass estimates and their uncertainties for each study area are provided in per-tree and gridded format. The canopy height models used for the tree detection and biomass estimation are also provided.
