High Frequency Meteorological, Drift-Corrected Dissolved Oxygen, and Thermistor Temperature Data - Lake Sunapee Buoy, NH, USA, 2007 – 2013

The Lake Sunapee Protective Association (Sunapee, New Hampshire, USA) has been operating an instrumented buoy on Lake Sunapee (maximum depth 33.7 meters) beginning on 27 August 2007. The environmental sensors on the buoy from 2007 - 2013 provided information on weather conditions, lake thermal structure, and oxygen dynamics, and their data can be used to calculate physical and biological variables such as buoyancy frequency, thermocline depth, thermal stability, and lake metabolism. The sensors were programmed to collect environmental data every 10 minutes. The buoy collected meteorological data 1.7 meters above the lake surface, including wind speed and direction (Vaisala WXT52 anemometer), air temperature and humidity (Vaisala HMP50), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR Li-Cor). The water temperature sensors (TempLine thermistors from Apprise Technology in 2007-2010; NexSens T-node sensors 2010-2013) were situated at 0.5-2 meter intervals from 0-14 meters deep with the bottom sensor approximately 1 meter from the sediments. The dissolved oxygen (Zebra-Tech d-opto) sensor was deployed at approximately 1 meter below the surface and recorded oxygen concentration (mg/L), oxygen saturation (%), and temperature at the sensor (oxygen saturation is not included in this dataset). The buoy was anchored at approximately 15 meter deep water near the Loon Island lighthouse in the northern half of the lake, near the deepest part of the lake (43.390 N, -72.057 W). During the winter of 2007 - 2008, the buoy froze into the ice and continually recorded data with the uppermost thermistor below the bottom of the ice. In winter of 2008 - 2009, the buoy was damaged by ice and data were not collected until re-deployment on 29 July 2009. In subsequent years, the buoy was deployed from April or May to October or November at the Loon Island location and limited data were obtained during the winter months at the Sunapee Harbor (43.386 N, -72.081 W). Carabids data of Pterostichus flavofemoratus and Carabus depressus in the Gran Paradiso National Park (2006, 2007, 2012, 2013)

<p>Understanding risks to biodiversity requires predictions of the spatial distribution of species adapting to changing ecosystems and, to that end, earth observations integrating field surveys prove essential as they provide key figures for assessing landscape-wide biodiversity scenarios. Here, we develop, and apply to a relevant case study, a method suited to merge earth/field observations with spatially explicit stochastic metapopulation models to study the near-term ecological dynamics of target species in complex terrains. Our framework incorporates the use of species distribution models for a reasoned estimation of the initial presence of the target species, and accounts for imperfect and incomplete detection of the species presence in the study area. It also uses a metapopulation fitness function derived from earth observation data subsuming the ecological niche of the target species. This framework is applied to contrast occupancy of two species of carabids (<em>Pterostichus flavofemoratus</em>, <em>Carabus depressus</em>) observed  in the context of a large ecological monitoring program carried out within the Gran Paradiso National Park (GPNP, Italy). Results suggest that the proposed framework may indeed exploit the hallmarks of spatially explicit ecological approaches and of remote Earth observations. The model reproduces well the observed <em>in-situ</em> data. Moreover, it projects in the near-term the two species' presence both in space and time, highlighting the features of the metapopulation dynamics of colonization and extinction, and their expected trends within verifiable timeframes.</p>

<p><strong>Motivation</strong></p> <p>The data in this dataset is a spatial inventory of <strong>urban agriculture</strong> (UA) carried out in the city of Rome (Italy) (Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA)). Cultivation is diversified ranging from leafy vegetables to herbs and fruit trees. Production is intended for self-consumption and/or for hobby purposes.</li> <li><strong>Community garden: </strong>A large area subdivided into multipleplots managed individually (i.e. allotment) or collectively by a group of people. Crop production is intended for self-consumption. Land is assigned by the Municipality; several cases of land cultivated without authorization are also common.</li> <li><strong>Urban farm: </strong>Parcel managed by professional farmers with an intensive and an advanced cropping system. The cultivation can be specialized or oriented to high diversity vegetables. The production is intended for market. The mapping procedure focus exclusively on horticulture, vineyard, olive groves and orchard.</li> <li><strong>Institutional garden: </strong>Parcel managed by institutions or organizations like schools, religious center, prisons and non-profit organizations. The production is generally intended for self-consumption and less frequently for trade. Several gardens in this category are intended for social purposes (e.g. recreation,education, etc.).</li> <li><strong>Illegal garden: </strong>Parcel isolated, cultivated without authorization organized and managed individually or by a few people. Localization occurs on unused or abandoned areas owned by public bodies or private subjects.
