Species richness of vascular plants and bryophytes in nine grassland sites (Europe and California collected in 2013-2016)

We sampled vascular plants (VP) and bryophytes (non-vascular plant; NVP) 1×1 m experimental plots in nine sites belonging to the Nutrient Network. Three sites were in California, two in Finland and UK and one in Germany and Switzerland. The data were collected to compare the responses of NVPs and VPs to nutrient addition and grazing exclusion treatments. The NVP and VP cover sampling was conducted in March-August 2016, except for heron.uk and rook.uk, which had been sampled for VPs in 2013. NVPs were mostly identified to species, but in absence of necessary diagnostic characters (capsules, other reproductive organs, distinctive gametophytic features), some specimens were identified at morphospecies group, subgenus, or genus level. We calculated three plant diversity indices for NVPs, VPs and total (NVPs and VPs combined) in each plot. First, species richness (S) is the number of species per 1 m2 for NVPs and VPs. For plots having no NVPs, NVP richness is zero. Second, for plots having at least one NVP, we calculated Inverse Simpson’s index of diversity (referred to as species diversity), which is equivalent to the Probability of Interspecific Encounter or Effective Number of Species (ENSPIE). Third, we calculated Simpson’s evenness (E = ENSPIE/S; referred to as evenness), which was expected to reflect changes in species’ dominance. We also sampled aboveground plant biomass at peak biomass of vascular plants (in May- August, depending on local site level characteristics) by clipping at ground level and removing all aboveground vegetation (live and dead) from two 0.1 × 1 m strips, sorting the current year’s VP and NVP biomass from the previous year’s biomass (dead litter), drying the biomass to a constant mass at 60 °C, and weighing it to the nearest 0.01 g. NDVI Raster maps of Scotland for 2013-2016 used to analyse correlations between greenness, mortality and mental health.

<p>These files were used in the analysis for &quot;Greenness, mortality and mental health prescription rates in urban Scotland - a population level, observational study&quot; Hyam. Submitted to RIO 2020.</p> <p><strong>Extract on construction of data</strong></p> <p>NDVI data was downloaded from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Land Satellites Data System (LSDS) Science Research and Development (LSRD) (United States Geological Survey 2018). Which produces Level 2 and Level 3 data products from the Level 1 data of instruments aboard Landsat Satellites. For this study Surface Reflectance data generated by the Landsat Surface Reflectance Code (LaSRC) from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) instrument aboard the Landsat 8 satellite was used (United States Geological Survey 2018). The Surface Reflectance NDVI (sr_ndvi) product and Level-2 Pixel Quality Assessment band (pixel_qa) were downloaded for Landsat scenes 204/21, 205/21, 206/21, 204/20, 205/20, 206/20 WRS-2 (NASA 2018) for the calendar years 2013 to 2016. These scenes cover most of Scotland and include all the major urban areas. A full list of the 333 products is given in supplemental material.&nbsp;Suppl. material 2</p> <p>All of Scotland is over 54&deg; North and so for many satellite images the sun is at too low an angle to give reliable surface reflectance data especially in the winter months. Scotland also has an oceanic climate so the ground is often obscured by cloud or mist. To build a detailed, contiguous NDVI map of the whole country therefore requires combining images taken on many satellite passes especially if points are to be sampled multiple times to overcome measurement errors. The images downloaded from USGS were therefore combined. A cloud free version of each NDVI image was created by setting the pixels that corresponded&nbsp;to cloud, snow or water in the Quality Assurance Assessment band to NA. These cloud free images were then combined into a single, mosaic stack of images to cover all of the study area and then averaged down to a single layer as a tiff image. This was done for two seasonal periods, Winter (October, November, December of 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 combined with January, February, March of 2014, 2015, 2016) and summer (April, May, June, July, August, September of 2014, 2015, and 2016). The resulting two images covering most of Scotland for winters and summers between 2013 and 2016 and formed the basis of subsequent analysis.</p> <p>These two files are included here along with a list of the Landsat products used to produce them.</p>

Dendrometers during drought 2013-2016 in the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot

96 trees of 25 species were fit with dendrometer bands in November 2012 and measured for 4 years, on average every 28 days. Initially sampling intensity was once every three months then increase to bi-weekly. The trees were located in the LFDP in 5 modified Gentry transects placed throughout (one in each corner and one in the center); tree tags are LFDP numbers corresponding with LFDP tree census data. Measurements ended in November 2016. Major ion and nutrient concentrations of water-soluble salts leached from aeolian material, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2013-2016)

To evaluate the role of Antarctic aeolian transport in surface chemistry homogenization, fifty-three samples of aeolian material from the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica were collected and analyzed for water-soluble major ions and nutrients at a 1:5 sediment:water ratio. Samples were collected seasonally from Alatna Valley, Victoria Valley, Miers Valley, and Taylor Valley (Taylor Glacier, East Lake Bonney, F6 (Lake Fryxell), and Explorer’s Cove) at five heights (~5, 10, 20, 50, 100 cm) above the surface between 2013 and 2015. This data package is associated with Aeolian Material Transport and Its Role in Landscape Connectivity in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, published by Diaz et al. in 2018 (DOI: 10.1029/2017JF004589).

Trace metal, ion, and nutrient concentrations in aeolian samples subjected to experimental freeze-thaw cycles, collected from Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2013-2016)

This data package contains measurements of trace metal, ion, and nutrient concentrations in aeolian samples collected from several locations throughout Taylor Valley in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica during the 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 austral summers. Samples were collected by the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research Program (MCM LTER) using Big Spring Number Eight (BSNE) isokinetic wind samplers located at Explorer’s Cove, Lake Fryxell at F6, East Lake Bonney, and Taylor Glacier. Samples were then subjected to experimental freeze-thaw cycles in a controlled laboratory setting to simulate supraglacial weathering processes and then analyzed to understand how freeze-thaw cycles affect nutrient, ion, and trace metal concentrations over time.

Surface carbon, water and energy fluxes measured by eddy covariance at 3 sites within the Alaska Peatlands Experiment and Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest 2013-2016

These data are simultaneous and continuous measurements of carbon, water and energy fluxes of the terrestrial landscape. These fluxes are major regulatory drivers of the boreal climate system and form key linkages and feedbacks between the land surface, the atmosphere and the oceans. At the APEX project site, within Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, this monitoring is repeated across a chronosequence of permafrost degradation; the Black Spruce site is an area of stable permafrost with intact black spruce forest (APEX gamma site), the Thermokarst site is an active thermokarst zone with considerable tree mortality (APEX betaSW site), the Fen site is within a stable treeless fen with deep active layer depth (APEX apexcon,low, and ele sites). The main variables being monitored are the instananeous fluxes of CO2, water vapor and surface energy (shortwave, longwave and net radiation), secondary variables included photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), air and soil temperatures, rainfall, snow depth, soil moisture content, wind direction and speed, and average atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and H2O through the year.
