Cascade project at North Temperate Lakes LTER - High-resolution spatial analysis of CASCADE lakes during experimental nutrient enrichment 2015 - 2016
This dataset contains high-resolution spatio-temporal water quality data from two experimental lakes during a whole-ecosystem experiment. Through gradual nutrient addition, we induced a cyanobacteria bloom in an experimental lake (Peter Lake) while leaving a nearby reference lake (Paul Lake) as a control. Peter and Paul Lakes (Gogebic county, MI USA), were sampled using the FLAMe platform (Crawford et al. 2015) multiple times during the summers of 2015 and 2016. In 2015 nutrient additions to Peter Lake began on 1 June, and ceased on 29 June, Paul Lake was left unmanipulated. In 2016 no nutrients were added to either lake. Measurements were taken using a YSI EXO2 probe and a Garmin echoMap 50s. Sensor- data were collected continuously at 1 Hz and linked via timestamp to create spatially explicit data for each lake. Effects of 2015 experimental burn on Eriophorum vaginatum at Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska 2016
This was an experimental burn conducted in the summer of 2015 to provide sites for an experiment to see whether seeds of Eriophorum vaginatum from different ecotypes could establish in recently burned areas. It consisted of ten 2 meter X 2 meter plots along with a similar number of control plots. There was little seedling establishment but other data have been collected on the plots.
DOM composition changes in Altamaha River and Sapelo Sound estuaries measured by FT-ICR mass spectrometry from September 2015 to September 2016
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a large and complex mixture of compounds with source inputs that differ with location, season and environmental conditions. Here, we investigated drivers of DOM composition changes in a marsh-dominated estuary off the southeastern U.S. Monthly water samples were collected at a riverine and estuarine site from September 2015 to September 2016, and bulk, optical, and molecular analyses were conducted on samples before and after dark incubations. Results showed that river discharge was the primary driver changing the DOM composition at the mouth of the Altamaha River. For discharge higher than ~ 150 m3 s-1, DOC concentrations and the terrigenous character of the DOM increased approximately linearly with river flow. For low discharge conditions, a clear signature of salt marsh-derived compounds was observed in the river. At the head of Sapelo Sound, changes in DOM composition were primarily driven by river discharge and possibly by summer algae blooms. Microbial consumption of DOC was larger during periods of high discharge at both sites, potentially due to the higher mobilization and influx of fresh material to the system. The Georgia coast was hit by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016, which resulted in a large input of carbon to the estuary. The DOC concentration was ~ 2 times higher and DOM composition was more aromatic with a stronger terrigenous signature compared to the seasonal maximum observed earlier in the year during peak river discharge conditions. This suggests that extreme events notably impact DOM quantity and quality in estuarine regions.
White spruce trees tagged measured for total height and girth at 10 centimeter height, and leader length, Coldfoot, Alaska 2015, 2016
White spruce seedlings have colonized the site of the Coldfoot transplant garden (CF, 67°15′32″N, 150°10′12″W) since the original garden was established in 1982. Some trees are 2-3 meter tall. All seedlings and trees within the current (2014) garden were tagged, located with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, and measured in 2015 and 2016 for total height and girth at 10 centimeter height and leader length.
Ion exchange membrane measure of nutrient availability of the 2015 experimental burn at Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska 2016
An experimental burn conducted in the summer of 2015 to provide sites for an experiment whether seeds of Eriophorum vaginatum from different ecotypes could establish in recently burned areas. It consisted of ten 2 meter X 2 meter plots along with a similar number of control plots. There was little seedling establishment but other data were collected on the plots. Ion exchange membranes were used to measure nutrient availability over two time periods: Early season (June) and mid season (July).

Composition and biolability of dissolved organic matter from arctic and boreal streams April 2015 - May 2016
In this study, we collected samples throughout the year from up to eight streams along an arctic-boreal gradient in interior Alaska, ranging from discontinuous to continuous permafrost. We measured dissolved organic matter (DOM) biolability and nutrient limitation of decomposition through laboratory incubations of streamwater, and characterized DOM composition through optical properties and chemical analysis.

Algal cover and biomass on the mudflats of the Virginia Coast, 2015, 2016 and 2018
In May and July of 2015 benthic macroalgae biomass was measured throughout the Virginia Coast Reserve to assess variation on intertidal mudflats, especially of Gracilaria vermiculophylla. (data table 1) In 2016, nine tidal flats were sampled for macroalgal cover, and biomass (data tables 2 and 3) Macroalgal mass were collected from 36 mudflats sites in May 2018. Eight samples collected from randomly selected points along a single 120 m transect (data table 4). Codes, full names and locations of sampling locations for the 2016 and 2018 sampling are in data table 5.

Co-occurrence of in-stream nitrogen fixation and denitrification across a nitrogen gradient in a western U.S. watershed, 2015 - 2016
This data was collected as part of the NSF CAREER Grant DEB 14-51919 to Amy Marcarelli to evaluate if nitrogen fixation and denitrification co-occur in streams across a gradient of nitrate concentrations. This data was collected during summer 2015 and 2016 in the Portneuf River watershed near Pocatello, ID. In summer 2015, rates of nitrogen fixation were only measured on rock substrate and denitrification only on sediment substrate. In summer 2016, both process rates were measured on both rock and sediment substrate to more accurately capture variation in rates.
