Multi-material 3D Printing of Thermoplastic Elastomers for Development of Soft Robotic Structures with Integrated Sensor Elements

Embedded sensing can benefit soft robots with the ability to interact with their environment but producing embedded soft sensors can be challenging. Multi-material Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) additive manufacturing allows producing complex structures, by combining more than one kind of polymeric material. For multi-material FDM, conductive thermoplastic elastomer filaments have been developed. This allows the printing of flexible functional structures, based on thermoplastic elastomer structures with conductive paths that are of great interest for stretchable electronics and soft robotic applications. In this study, stretchable piezoresistive elastomer strain sensor composites were successfully produced by using multi-material FDM. A piezoresistive thermoplastic elastomer was printed on the top of a nonconductive, flexible thermoplastic elastomer strip using FDM multi-material 3D printer. FDM elastomer filaments with different shore hardness as substrate materials for the gripper structure were used. The hardness of the elastomer affected the printability and the adhesion to the conductive elastomer material, which was used as a strain sensor material. The hardness affected the strain sensor properties too. The piezoresistive response, dynamic behavior, drift, relaxation and sensitivity of the printed multi-material strips were investigated by tensile tests. Soft robotic grippers with integrated sensing elements to detect deformation while touching the objective were selected as a case study. The soft grippers with the integrated sensors exhibited intelligent response by recognizing when they were griping a small or big object and when an obstacle was inhibiting their function.

3D Printed Living Bacterial Cellulose and Biopolymer Composite Material Samples

The images in this dataset were captured during an experiment initiated on 13 March 2023 at CITA, at the Royal Danish Academy, School of Architecture. The experiment was performed on 3d printed samples made from a material combining living cellulose-producing bacteria with a biopolymer composite. The biopolymer composite combines a xantham gum binder, glycerol and calcium chloride with cellulose fillers sourced from side and waste streams materials. During the experiment, the dormant bacterial cellulose was reawakened through the spraying of tea nutrient at timed intervals of 30 minutes for 2 seconds, for a period of 42 days.

Heterolayered carbon allotrope architectonics via multi-material 3D printing for advanced electrochemical devices

3D printing has become a powerful technique in electrochemistry for fabricating electrodes, thanks to readily available conductive nanocomposite filaments, such as those based on carbon fillers (i.e., carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or carbon black (CB)) within an insulating polymeric matrix like polylactic acid (PLA). Inspired by inorganic heterostructures that enhance the functional characteristics of nanomaterials, we fabricated hetero-layered 3D printed devices based on carbon allotropes using a layer-by-layer assembly approach. The heterolayers were customised through the alternate integration of different carbon allotrope filaments via a multi-material 3D printing technique, allowing for a time-effective method to enhance electrochemical performance. As a first demonstration of applicability, CNT/PLA and CB/PLA filaments were utilised to construct ordered hetero-layered carbon-based electrodes. This contrasts with conventional methods where various carbon species are mixed in the same composite-based filament used for building electrochemical devices. Multi-material 3D-printed carbon electrodes exhibit improved electrochemical performance in energy conversion (e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction or HER) and sensing applications (e.g., ascorbic acid detection) compared to single-material electrodes. This work paves the way for manufacturing advanced 3D-printed heterolayered electrodes with enhanced electrochemical activity through multi-material 3D printing technology.

Formwork-free 3d printing of a barrel vault with cementitious material

The video shows the printing process of a barrel vault with cementitious material. the creation of arches ensures the stability of the structure at all time even in the absence of temporary support. The layers are well identifiable on the video as well as the local deformation induced by the pressure applied by the extruded material on previous layers. The quality of the recording can lead to an image correlation analysis of the layering process.

Supporting Material: Proof-of-principle of 3D-printed track-end detectors for dosimetry in proton therapy

Project description and contents of the submitted manuscript:

Background: Dosimetric equipment in particle therapy (PT) is associated with high costs. There is a lack of versatile, tissue-equivalent detectors suitable for in-vivo dosimetry. Faraday-cup (FC) type detectors are sensitive to stopped protons, i.e. to trackends. They experience a renaissance in PT as they can cope with high dose rates. Owing to their simple functional principle, production of FC could benefit from the dynamic technological developments in additive manufacturing of sensors.

Purpose: To build FC-type detectors for PT by standard 3D-printing. This study seeks to build an integrating, single-channel FC for replacement of a traditional FC and a 2×2 array of FC elements indicating the feasibility of a spatially resolving detector.

Methods: Samples of FCs were produced with a dual-extruder 3D-printer with polylactic-acid filaments, which contained graphite in the conductive parts of the detector. Production was optimizied in terms of materials and printing temperature. Samples were characterized by electrical tests and non-destructive 3D x-ray imaging. Beam tests were conducted at a clinical PT machine.

Results: Operational FC-type detectors for proton fields were printed. The detected charge of the single-channel FC corresponded qualitatively to the one of a traditional FC. A 2 × 2 FC array was fabricated in a single run. There was a linear relationship between the response of the individual FC elements and the machine output.

Conclusions: 3D-printing is a viable method for producing low-cost, tissue-equivalent, FC-type detectors for PT. They could potentially be used as track-end detectors in anthropomorphic phantoms.

Shared files:

2x2_FC_matrix: design CAD files of FC array

Single_channel_FC: design CAD files of simplified, single-channel FC

CT_matrix: high-resolution x-ray CT image set of the 2x2 FC array

Measured_values_for_MedPhys_technical_note: Excel sheet of the data presented in the paper

Characterisation of mechanical properties of materials used in 3D printing

The mechanical properties of 19 materials used in 3D printing were experimentally tested. Mechanical properties (mostly elastic modulus and strength, but not only) were obtained and compared for filaments, single-extruded fibres, and dog-bone type specimens printed with printing angles 0, 90° and intermediate angles. Thus, anisotropy of properties was considered. The density, modulus of elasticity, and tensile strength values were compared for all mentioned types of specimens.
