Seawater chromium concentrations and isotope compositions in the Southern Ocean during the austral summer of 2016/2017, on board the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Dissolved seawater chromium (Cr) concentrations and stable isotope compositions measured on samples collected with a trace metal clean rosette system in the Southern Ocean. Stations TM 7 to TM 12 reflect a north-south transect from Hobart, Tasmania to Mertz Glacier in Antarctica. Stations TM 14 and TM 15 neighbour the Balleny Islands. Stations TM 18 and TM 20 are located in the Drake Passage. Water samples were collected down to a depth of 1000 metres. The water was filtered in a class 100 clean container aboard the ship through pre-rinsed Supor Acropak capsule filters (0.2 um). Subsequently the samples were acidified and stored at a pH < 2 for several months prior to analysis. Reported values therefore represent bulk seawater chromium (Cr III and Cr VI). Physical and biogeochemical oceanography data from Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) rosette deployments during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set contains measurements from various sensors mounted on the Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) rosette that was deployed in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). 63 CTD casts were carried out during three legs in the period 21st December 2016 to 16th March 2017, including one test cast and one failed cast, for which no data is available. Data include temperature, salinity, pressure, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, chlorophyll-a concentration, backscatter, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and reported are also the computed variables density, depth, and sound velocity. All data has been quality controlled and post-cruise calibrated, except for the oxygen data. Data is provided at 1 dbar pressure intervals for the up- and down-casts separately and as a merged bottle file when Niskin bottles were closed. Sky irradiance over photosynthetically active radiation wavelengths (400-700 nm) recorded shipboard during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the Austral Summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains high resolution records of sky irradiance over photosynthetically active radiation wavelengths (PAR; 400-700 nm) recorded shipboard during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) Leg 1-3. A hemispherical PAR sensor was fixed to the bow of the RV Akademik Tryoshnikov ship at approximately 2 metres height above the main deck and continuously recorded the irradiance over PAR wavelengths (400-700 nm) at 1 minute intervals from 21st December 2016 to the 16th March 2017. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen concentrations and stable isotope composition (delta 13C and delta 15N) sampled during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) Leg 1-3. Water samples were collected from the underway seawater supply every 3 hours, filtered onto pre-combusted glass fibre filters, acidified to remove inorganic compounds and analysed for both elements on the same filter using an elemental analyser. Physical and biogeochemical oceanography data from underway measurements with an AquaLine Ferrybox during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set contains measurements from various sensors installed on the Aqualine Ferrybox system that was connected to the underway seawater supply in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Data was collected continuously except for periods when the pump of the underway system was switched off or the system was turned off. Data collection covers all three cruise legs in the period 24th December 2016 to 18th March 2017. Data collected with the CTG MiniPack CTD-F are temperature, salinity, pressure, and turbidity. Data collected by the Aanderaa oxygen optode include dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation. An SBE 18 sensor measured pH. The CTG UniLux fluorometer measured chlorophyll-a concentration. All data has been quality controlled and post-cruise calibrated. Data is provided at 1-minute intervals along the cruise track. In addition, we provide satellite data (sea-surface temperature, sea-surface height, geostrophic velocity, sea-ice concentration) that was interpolated to the cruise-track and an estimate of frontal positions to supplement this underway data set where data was missing or for additional information. This circumpolar data set provides insights into the circumpolar surface ocean conditions and biogeochemistry of the Southern Ocean during one austral summer season.</p> <p>Note on version 1.0: The first version of this data set only contains temperature, salinity, pressure, and potential density in the post-processed file, since post-processing and quality control for turbidity, chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, and pH have not been finalized. Seawater salinity sample measurements from the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE)
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set contains salinity measurements from discrete seawater samples that were collected in the Southern Ocean (south of 30deg S) during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). 657 samples were collected during the period December 24th, 2016 and March 18th, 2017 in the Southern Ocean from the surface ocean using the ship's underway line (UW; 328 samples) and in vertical profiles using Niskin bottles mounted on the CTD rosette (273 samples). A few additional samples (56) were collected from a parallel cast with a trace-metal rosette, with a bucket, and as duplicates to ensure data quality. All samples were analyzed for their salinity and results are reported on the Practical Salinity Scale 1978 (PSS-78; Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., 1989). Measurements were performed on a Guildline Autosal Laboratory Salinometer 8400(B) at CSIRO (Hobart, Australia) for samples collected during leg 1, and on a OPTIMARE Precision Salinometer (OPS) at the Alfred Wegener Institute (Bremerhaven, Germany) for samples collected during legs 2 and 3. This circumpolar data set provides insights into the hydrological cycle of the Southern Ocean and the processes (precipitation, evaporation, sea-ice melting and freezing, ice-berg and land-ice melting) that determine the salinity of a certain water mass. Concentration of gaseous sulfuric acid measured over the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2016/2017, during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The authors would highly appreciate being contacted if the data is used for any purpose.</p> <p>We measured sulfuric acid concentration in the gas phase with a nitrate chemical ionization mass spectrometer (we used an APi-HTOF mass spectrometer produced by Tofwerk AG coupled with a Chemical ionization inlet A70 produced by Airmodus). Sulfuric acid is detected in the mass spectrometer either as a deprotonated ion or as a cluster with the reagent ion (NO3-). The concentration is calculated as the area of these two peaks normalized to the concentration of the reagent ions (monomer, dimer and trimer) and multiplied by a calibration factor that was experimentally derived at Paul Scherrer Institute in the summer 2017, after the campaign. In the atmosphere, sulfuric acid is produced by the oxidation of sulfur dioxide that could have both a natural or anthropogenic origin (e.g. phytoplankton emission or fossil fuel combustion). Sulfuric acid in the atmosphere is responsible for a very large fraction of the newly formed particles, therefore it is important to have accurate measurements of this vapour in remote places like the Southern Ocean to better understand secondary aerosol sources and processes.</p> <p>The data have been cleaned from the influence of the exhaust of the research vessel. Temporal coverage is from January 22, 2017 to March 19, 2017. There are no data for the first leg of the expedition because the instrument was not on the ship. The instrument was operated during leg 4 but data has not been processed yet as they require additional work due to some instrumental issues that affects their quality. Data were collected with one-second time resolution but integrated to five minutes to increase the signal to noise ratio.</p> <p>Concentrations are reported as molecules per cubic centimeter. Seawater stable isotope sample measurements from the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE)
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set contains oxygen and hydrogen isotope measurements from discrete seawater samples that were collected in the Southern Ocean (south of 30 deg S) during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). 637 samples were collected during the period December 24th, 2016 and March 18th, 2017 in the Southern Ocean from the surface ocean using the ship's underway line (UW; 338 samples) and in vertical profiles using Niskin bottles mounted on the CTD rosette (287 samples). A few additional samples were collected from a parallel cast with a trace-metal rosette, with a bucket, and from the surface of a tabular iceberg. All samples were analyzed for their oxygen isotopic composition (reported as permille deviation of the oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 ratio from VSMOW2: DEL18O) and a few samples (80) from the Pacific sector were analyzed for their hydrogen isotopic composition (reported as permille deviation of the hydrogen to deuterium ratio from VSMOW2: DELD) by mass spectrometry at the British Geological Survey. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>A Trimble Global Positioning System (GPS) recorded the route undertaken by the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during a circumnavigation of the Antarctic as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) in the austral summer of 2016/2017. Quality-checked, one-hour resolution cruise track of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) undertaken during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE), undertaken in the austral summer of 2016/2017 recorded the cruise track using two independent geo-location instruments: one using GLobal NAvigation Satellite Systems (GLONASS; hereafter referred to as GLONASS) and another primarily using the Global Positioning System (GPS; hereafter referred to as the Trimble GPS). Daily log files were recorded in real-time from both instruments during the expedition and added to MySQL database tables. Following the expedition, quality-checking work has been undertaken to provide a one-second resolution set of positions for the cruise track. Here we present the final quality-checked dataset aggregated to a resolution of one hour. Non-refractory particulate sulfate and chloride data from a time of flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor around the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2016/17, during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) campaign was conducted between 20th December 2016 and 19th March 2017. The time of flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ToF-ACSM, Aerodyne Research Inc.) was deployed. It is capable of providing 10-minute resolution chemical compositions of NR-PM1 (non-refractory particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter smaller than 1 µm), including sulphate, nitrate, ammonium and organics. Chloride is refractory and can only be measured qualitatively, that is relative changes in intensity are trustworthy while absolute concentrations are a clear underestimation, because most of the chloride is in refractory form as part of sea salt in the marine environment. Since this ACSM dataset was collected on the ship, the ship exhaust will occasionally interfere with the natural signal. Therefore data gaps exist. The overall concentrations of particulate organics, nitrate and ammonium remained low, mostly below detection limit, except during the polluted periods. Thus, we do not report these three components. Only sulphate can be retrieved as a quantitative variable from this dataset.</p> <p>This dataset provides limited information on the chemical composition of sub-micron non-refractory aerosol in the Southern Ocean and gives hints on potential sources. Chloride clearly reflects the contribution of sea salt to the aerosol population. This can be checked by relating the particulate chloride to wind speed (Landwehr et al., 2019; 10.5281/zenodo.3379590) and particles with large diameters (Schmale et al., 2019; 10.5281/zenodo.2636709). <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset includes the raw data of stable water vapour isotope (δ18O, δ2H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements at a height of approximately 8 meters above sea level taken in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometer L2120 mounted on the port side of the ship. The spectrometer was operated throughout the whole expedition. This data has to be calibrated using the calibration runs and applying an appropriate calibration procedure following the IAEA guide lines.</p> <p>Two similar datasets also measuring stable water isotopes (SWIs) in water vapour were collected during the same expedition and can be distinguished from this dataset due to the height of the measurement collection (at 8 m a.s.l and 13.5 m a.s.l). <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set includes the calibrated data of stable water vapour isotope (δ<sup>18</sup>O, δ<sup>2</sup>H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements at approximately 13.5 m a.s.l. taken around the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometer L2130. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Depth of the seabed along the five-minute averaged cruise track (Landwehr et al., 2020; DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.3752691) of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) was calculated from the the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO; GEBCO Compilation Group, 2019) 2019 gridded 30-arc second bathymetry data. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Scattered sunlight measurements can be strongly affected by clouds, mainly due to multiple scattering effects that give rise to large uncertainties in the light path retrieval. In order to estimate cloud cover, we recorded images of the sky every 5 minutes to evaluate a cloud index, from 0 (clear sky) to 10 (completely overcast).</p> <p>This dataset presents the sky images in PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format recorded on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the austral summer of 2016/17 as part of the circumnavigation expedition (ACE).
