California's Central Valley Project Improvement Act Predation Contact Point Study - 2022: Predator-prey interactions under low artificial lighting in a laboratory setting
The highest rates of piscivorous predation in the field have been recorded during crepuscular light levels associated with sunrise and sunset or artificial lighting at night (ALAN). We conducted a laboratory study where groups of predator-naïve, hatchery-raised juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to natural-origin piscivorous largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) under three light treatments representative of brighter crepuscular periods or direct ALAN illumination (“high” treatment), dimmer crepuscular periods or sky glow from ALAN (“medium” treatment), and night or no ALAN (“low” treatment). We then statistically evaluated potential associations between light treatment, prey group cohesion, and predator activity.

DATASET OF "Impact of short-acting vs. standard anaesthetic agents on obstructive sleep apnoea: a randomised, controlled, triple-blind trial"
<p>Sleep apnoea is associated with negative outcomes following general anaesthesia. Current recommendations suggest using short-acting anaesthetic agents in preference to standard agents to reduce this risk, but there is currently no evidence to support this. This randomised controlled triple-blind trial tested the hypothesis that a combination of short-acting agents (desflurane-remifentanil) would reduce the postoperative impact of general anaesthesia on sleep apnoea severity compared with standard agents (sevoflurane-fentanyl). Sixty patients undergoing hip arthroplasty under general anaesthesia were randomised to anaesthesia with desflurane-remifentanil or sevoflurane-fentanyl. Respiratory polygraphy was performed before surgery and on the first and third postoperative nights. The primary outcome was the supine apnoea-hypopnoea index on the first postoperative night. Secondary outcomes were the supine apnoea-hypopnoea index on the third postoperative night, and the oxygen desaturation index on the first and third postoperative nights. Additional outcomes included intravenous morphine equivalent consumption and pain scores on postoperative days 1, 2 and 3. Pre-operative sleep study data were similar between groups. Mean (95%CI) values for the supine apnoea-hypopnoea index on the first postoperative night were 18.9 (12.7–25.0) and 21.4 (14.2–28.7) events.h<sup>-1</sup>, respectively, in the short-acting and standard anaesthesia groups (p=0.64). Corresponding values on the third postoperative night were 28.1 (15.8–40.3) and 38.0 (18.3–57.6) events.h<sup>-1</sup> (p=0.34). Secondary sleep- and pain-related outcomes were generally similar in the two groups. In conclusion, short-acting anaesthetic agents did not reduce the impact of general anaesthesia on sleep apnoea severity compared with standard agents. These data should prompt an update of current recommendations.</p>
Warming acts through earlier snowmelt to advance but not extend alpine community flowering
<p>Large-scale warming will alter multiple local climate factors in alpine tundra, yet very few experimental studies examine the combined yet distinct influences of earlier snowmelt, higher temperatures and altered soil moisture on alpine ecosystems. This limits our ability to predict responses to climate change by plant species and communities. To address this gap, we used infrared heaters and manual watering in a fully factorial experiment to determine the relative importance of these climate factors on plant flowering phenology, and response differences among plant functional groups. Heating advanced snowmelt and flower initiation, but exposed plants to colder early-spring conditions in the period prior to first flower, indicating that snowmelt timing, not temperature, advances flowering initiation in the alpine community. Flowering duration was largely conserved; heating did not extend average species flowering into the latter part of the growing season but instead flowering was completed earlier in heated plots. Although passive warming experiments have resulted in warming-induced soil drying suggested to advance flower senescence, supplemental water did not counteract the average species advance in flowering senescence caused by heating or extend flowering in unheated plots, and variation in soil moisture had inconsistent effects on flowering periods. Functional groups differed in sensitivity to earlier snowmelt, with flower initiation most advanced for early-season species and flowering duration lengthened only for graminoids and forbs. We conclude that earlier snowmelt, driven by increased radiative heating, is the most important factor altering alpine flowering phenology. Studies that only manipulate summer temperature will err in estimating the sensitivity of alpine flowering phenology to large-scale warming. The wholesale advance in flowering phenology with earlier snowmelt suggests that alpine communities will track warming, but only alpine forbs and graminoids appear able to take advantage of an extended snow-free season. </p>
A Digital Humanities Approach to Textual Emendations with a Special Focus on Ἰουδαίαν in Acts 2:9
<p>The original documents of almost all ancient writings have been lost, and the writings of the New Testament form no exception. Therefore, before any interpretation of a New Testament text, a researcher first must face the challenge of establishing its original wording by critically evaluating the differences in the existing manuscripts. The discipline of textual criticism provides criteria for systematic evaluation of such texts. Besides identified differences, there are texts where the different manuscripts do correspond, but where the content of the text puzzles the researcher. In these cases, some researchers assume a corruption of the text, which could have been caused by a variety of intentional and unintentional errors, and therefore emend the text by conjecture.<br> Any conjecture starts with an observation on the text, in which a critic is guided by some preunderstanding that leads to the detection of an oddity. After the detection of the textual problem, the critic needs to suggest an alternative that (1) fits the grammatical function of the disputed reading, (2) makes sense in the internal logic of the text, and (3) solves the assumed difficulties. Therefore, the credibility of a conjecture is restricted by grammar, semantics, and its historical, cultural, and geographical suitedness. Finally, the critic must also explain how the attested reading or readings could have originated from the proposed conjecture. Usually, a very early corruption during the transcription process is assumed, which could have been caused by palaeographic or phonetic confusion of letters.<br> This research proposes a method to estimate the probability of palaeographic confusion to explain the origination of conjectural emendations. Therefore, it introduces the confusion distance, a quantitative metric that indicates the relative proximity in orthography of alternative readings. This metric is based on the Levenshtein edit distance but is here expanded to account for the probability of confusion of a particular combination of (adjacent) letters and functionality has been added to evaluate three additional operations to mimic more sophisticated character confusion.<br> The resulting distances between the conjectured emendations and the manuscript readings are subsequently translated to a two-dimensional non-geographical space utilizing Multi-Dimensional Scaling and analyzed spatially to evaluate the probability of the originality of variant readings or textual emendations.<br> The remainder of the presentation will apply this method to the case of Ἰουδαίαν in Acts 2:9. Therefore, it will first present the issues which have challenged exegetes over time. Sex chromosomes and hormones independently influence healthy brain development but act similarly after cranial radiation
<h2><strong>Description</strong></h2> <p>Biological sex influences prevalence of developmental disorders through sex hormones and sex chromosomes. However, our understanding of their impacts in neurodevelopment and response to injury remains limited. In this project, we use high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the four core genotype mouse model (FCG) that separates the influences of sex hormones and sex chromosomes during normal brain development and after cranial radiation therapy. </p> <p>Sex differences are attributed to either sex hormones or sex chromosomes. This can be distinguished by the FCG model which decouples the sex determining region (SRY) from the Y chromosome by moving SRY onto an autosome. This gives us four core sex genotypes: XX NULL, XY NULL, XX SRY, and XY SRY.</p> <p>This dataset represents the <em>most comprehensive mouse brain imaging study</em> employing the FCG model to date with 5 timepoints (P14, P23, P42, P63, P98), Ccl2 wildtype (+/+) and knockouts (-/-), irradiation (7Gy) and sham (0Gy) mice. All in all, a total of <strong>1071 images</strong>! The results presented here is published in PNAS.</p> <p>In vivo MRI scans were obtained using a 7-T MRI scanner (Bruker BioSpin, Ettlingen, Germany) equipped with four cryocoils for simultaneous imaging of four mice. The scans were performed with the following settings: T1-weighted, 3D-gradient echo sequence, 75μm isotropic resolution, TR=26ms, TE=8.25ms, flip angle=26°, field of view=25×22×22mm, and matrix size=334×294×294.</p> <p>All structural MR images are stored in <strong>images.tar.gz</strong>. Images were segmented and registered using an automated pipeline which are stored in <strong>labels.tar.gz</strong>. The consensus average and labels are <strong>final_average.mnc </strong>and <strong>final_labels.mnc</strong>, respectively. Extracted structure volumes alongside the metadata are included in <strong>df_micevolumes.csv</strong>. Desiccation stress acts as cause as well as cost of dispersal in Drosophila melanogaster
<p>Environmental stress is one of the important causes of biological dispersal. At the same time, the process of dispersal itself can incur and/or increase susceptibility to stress for the dispersing individuals. Therefore, in principle, stress can serve as both a cause and a cost of dispersal. We studied these potentially contrasting roles of a key environmental stress (desiccation) using Drosophila melanogaster. By modulating water and rest availability, we asked whether: (a) dispersers are individuals that are more susceptible to desiccation stress, (b) dispersers pay a cost in terms of reduced resistance to desiccation stress, (c) dispersal evolution alters the desiccation cost of dispersal, and (d) females pay a reproductive cost of dispersal. We found that desiccation was a clear cause of dispersal in both sexes, as both male and female dispersal propensity increased with increasing duration of desiccation. However, the desiccation cost of dispersal was male-biased, a trend unaffected by dispersal evolution. Instead, females paid a fecundity cost of dispersal. We discuss the complex relationship between desiccation and dispersal, which can lead to both positive and negative associations. Furthermore, the sex differences highlighted here may translate into differences in movement patterns, thereby giving rise to sex-biased dispersal patterns.</p>

Data from: Evolutionary divergence via sexual selection acting on females in a species with sex role reversal
<p>1. There is much evidence that sexual selection drives the evolutionary divergence of male sexual traits, but little is known of females.</p> <p>2. Comparisons between neutral genetic divergence (FST) and phenotypic divergence (PST) among populations can reveal evolutionary responses to selection.</p> <p>3. In the bushcricket <em>Kawanaphila nartee</em>, changes in floral food availability cause sex roles to shift from competitive females and choosy males to choosy females and competitive males midway through the breeding season. Males call to attract females, and female auditory spiracle size is under sexual selection. We ask whether selection on females can drive an evolutionary divergence in auditory spiracle size among populations.</p> <p>4. We sampled 188 individuals from nine geographic locations and analysed 9,478 neutral SNP loci and two phenotypic characters to estimate FST and PST, respectively.</p> <p>5. We found that PST for female auditory spiracle size far exceeded the global FST, suggesting that female auditory spiracle size is subject to strong directional selection. We relate differences in phenotypic traits to differences in geological and floristic characteristics among the sites.</p> <p>6. Our data suggest that variation in sexual selection driven by variation in the floristic community on which this species feeds may contribute to the strength of directional selection acting on female <em>K. nartee</em> among populations.</p> <p>7. Together, these findings indicate that divergence among populations can be driven by sexual selection acting on females, even when that selection is temporary and circumscribed.</p>
