Data from: Charismatic species should be large: the role of admiration and fear

Humans show strong preferences for large, ʺcharismaticʺ animals. However, the ultimate reasons for these innate preferences remain unclear. In our research, we investigate the affective components of human attitudes toward animals, as well as the willingness to pay (WTP) for their conservation in a sample of N = 549 Slovak people using an online questionnaire.

From the use of structural equation modelling, we discovered that particularly large animals trigger both biophobic (fear) and biophilic (admiration) emotions in humans, and as a result, these emotions have contrasting effects on the WTP for animal conservation. Both fear and admiration of animals were influenced by the same emotions triggered by non-animal objects. Beliefs in the magical power of animals did not directly influence the WTP animal conservation, but was mediated by the admiration of large, non-animal objects. Females showed greater WTP for animal conservation than males, irrespective of the size of the species.

Therefore, we believe that biophobic responses from large animals and non-animal objects in contemporary humans were inherited from our mammalian ancestors, who were targets of predation by large prehistoric reptiles throughout a significant part of mammalian evolutionary history.

Dataset and analysis script for the manuscript "Status, rivalry and admiration-seeking in narcissism and depression: a behavioral study"

Datasets and analysis script for the manuscript "Status, rivalry and admiration-seeking in narcissism and depression: a behavioral study".

The attached R script begins with a read-me section with a short explanation of all variables present in the datasets. This information is also uploaded as a separate readMe in .txt format. Analyses are organized with respect to their order of appearance in the preprint (https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/mxve9).

The data is uploaded in two datasets: a long-format one (ds_pooled.csv) employed in the trial-by-trial regression models and a wide-format one for supplemental subject-level analyses (ds_pooled_wide.csv). The script contains code to further generate separate datasets for Samples 1 and 2 in both the long- and the wide-format. Please, refer to the manuscript for detailed information about how the data has been collected and analyzed.

Note: The ds_items.zip file contains datasets with item scores of the included psychometric scales (trait-dominance, narcissism scales and depression scales). These files are only used in a short section of the script to compute reliability coefficients.

Admiral Nimitz Barge
At Pearl Harbor, Admiral Nimitz's CINCPAC headquarters had a three boat flotilla: 40ft barge with a blue hull rather than a regulation black hull for Nimitz as a four star admiral; 40ft regulation barge (black hull) used by Nimitz's Chief of Staff, a two star admiral; 35ft gray officer's motor boat used by CINCPAC staff. A month after his oromotion to Fleet Admiral (five-star), Nimitz transferred his operational headquarters to Guam in January 1945. There, he had a Higgins boat converted to a barge. This is a 35ft US Navy motorboat restored to the appearance of the barge Admiral Nimitz used at Pearl Harbor, 1942-1944. This artifact is on display at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
