MERICS China Podcast: Finding a European answer to the China-Russia partnership, with Alice Ekman and Helena Legarda

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing on May 15 and 16 to meet with China’s leader Xi Jinping. This will be his first foreign trip after his reinauguration on May 7. The meeting will be another chance for the two leaders to emphasize how important and close the “no limits” partnership of Russia and China is. In this episode of the MERICS China Podcast, we look at the implications of the Sino-Russian relationship for the European Union, in particular due the ongoing invasion of Ukraine and their opposition to and undermining of the existing global order.

Johannes Heller-John is joined by Alice Ekman, Senior Analyst in charge of the Asia portfolio at the European Union Institute for Security Studies in Paris and Helena Legarda, Lead Analyst at MERICS. In their view, the China-Russia relationship is more stable than is often assumed.

ALICE Pb-Pb Run 2 event display with red/blue tracks: animation

This animated event display shows tracks in a Pb-Pb event recorded during Run 2 of the LHC. Individual tracks are shown following a red/blue colour code according to their charge, and tracks expand outwards with a velocity calculated with their measured momenta and using the pion mass hypothesis. Outer detectors are not shown for simplicity.

Alice Holt Jar
Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines – an Alice Holt food storage jar. 'Alice Holt' sounds like the Roman version of 'Clarice Cliff', but is actually a place, a wood near Farnham on the Hampshire/Surrey border. Roman potteries in the area produced enormous quantities of what is unkindly termed 'grey coarse ware'. Alice Holt jars and dishes are found extensively in the South East of England, and by the 4th century it accounts for 70% of all the pottery found at Staines. Our jar was reconstructed in the 1980s and the 'new' plaster parts crudely painted grey in an attempt to match the original. If we were doing this today the new parts would be left 'virgin' and clearly distinct from the original. Sitting on the back shelf of the 'Roman shop' in the museum, it gives a good impression of what would be sitting on shelves in most houses of the time. Reading museum have a rather beautiful complete version of this jar on display. Our jar stands 196mm high, 151mm outer rim diameter, 118mm inner rim diameter, 127mm Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
Reader's Experience of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland French-Oriented Questionnaire

This dataset contains the results of an online French-oriented questionnaire on readers' experience of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by English author Lewis Carroll. It shows data collected between the 18th of August, 2013 and the 2nd of March, 2014 on 628 anonymous volunteers from French-speaking countries (mainly France and Belgium) between 10 and 70 years old who answered questions on how they perceived Alice in Wonderland as well as some more general questions on their reading habits.

Knowledge representation of an ALICE Analysis

Alice in Wonderland in Central Park
Alice in Wonderland status located in Central Park. This status is north of the Conservatory Water at East 74th Street. It stands eleven feet tall in bronze, surrounded by the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit and a few of her other friends. This was constructed in 1959 by José de Creef. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
Alice in Quantum Land — Quantum Mechanics and its influence in (pop) culture

In this seminar we will discuss Quantum Mechanics (QM) not so much from the traditional point of view of Physics, but to assess the inevitable “reverberations” that this discipline has had, and still has, in popular culture. Indeed, one of the aspects known even to the layman is the strangeness of the laws that govern the subatomic world, where totally counterintuitive things happen. Those who are used to doing science in the traditional way, resting their research on solid epistemological foundations, when confronted with QM must “suspend judgment” and very often use it – very pragmatically – as a simple tool (which Physicists have shown they can do very well).

The seminar will focus on the bewilderment that the forerunners of this discipline already had to overcome to accept the “rules” it imposed, and we will see that among them even eminent minds made an enormous effort to accept these rules, when not even going so far as to reject this “new Physics” altogether.

The seminar will then briefly explore the more “pop” side, which is how, from the point of view of popularizing science, QM offers excellent tools to intrigue a lay audience.
