Data from: Cascading effects of apex predator recovery on rodent foraging activity and seed predation
This dataset was collected to examine the effects of apex predator presence on post-dispersal seed predation and rodent foraging behavior in Mediterranean ecosystems of southern Spain. The study focused on the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) as a top predator capable of altering mesopredator and small mammal communities through cascading interactions. We used the fleshy-fruited tree Pyrus bourgaeana as a model species and conducted a seed predation experiment in two areas with and without lynx presence. A total of 1152 seeds were placed in 144 seed depots across forest and open habitats and three microhabitat types (rock, shrub, and open ground). Rodent activity and foraging behavior were monitored using 36 camera traps installed at a subset of seed depots, and rodent abundance was estimated with live trapping one week later. The dataset includes seed predation counts, camera-trap records of rodent visits, live-trapping results, and vegetation cover estimates. These data allow investigation of how predation risk and habitat structure influence rodent activity and post-dispersal seed predation dynamics in Mediterranean landscapes.

Aquatic biofilm autotrohic index, carbon dioxide flux, and environmental conditions for the APEX water table experiment 2021-2023
To better understand linkages between hydrology and ecosystem carbon flux in northern aquatic ecosystems, we evaluated the relationship between plant communities, biofilm development, and carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange following long-term changes in hydrology in an Alaskan fen. We quantified seasonal variation in biofilm composition and CO2 exchange in response to lowered and raised water-table position (relative to a control) during years with varying levels of background dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We then used nutrient-diffusing substrates to evaluate cause-effect relationships between changes in plant subsidies (i.e., leachates) and biofilm composition among water-table treatments. We found that background DOC concentration determined whether plant subsidies promoted net autotrophy or heterotrophy on nutrient diffusing substrates. In conditions where background DOC was <= 40 mg L-1, plant subsidies promoted an autotrophic biofilm. Conversely, when background DOC concentration was >= 50 mg L-1, plant subsidies promoted heterotrophy. Greater light attenuation associated with elevated levels of DOC may have overwhelmed the stimulatory effect of nutrients on autotrophic microbes by constraining photosynthesis while simultaneously allowing heterotrophs to outcompete autotrophs for available nutrients. At the ecosystem level, conditions that favored an autotrophic biofilm resulted in net CO2 uptake among all water-table treatments, whereas the site was a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere in conditions that supported greater heterotrophy. Taken together, these findings show that hydrologic history interacts with changes in dominant plant functional groups to alter biofilm composition, which has consequences for ecosystem CO2 exchange.

Urban material ground truth data for the 2015 APEX hyperspectral image of Brussels

This dataset entails a spectral library file (.sli file with matching .hdr text file) with 1350 georeferenced and labeled spectra derived from the 2m resolution airborne hyperspectral APEX image of Brussels (Belgium) that was acquired during the summer of 2015. The labeled spectra included in this dataset describe level 2A surface reflectance profiles ranging between 450 and 2431 nm. The original APEX image files can be downloaded via the Belair website, and the preprocessing performed on this image data is explained in Sterckx et al. (2016) and Vreys et al. (2016). See the "Related works" section of this data publication.

The main purpose of this dataset is to provide Ground Truth (GT) data for remote sensing-based mapping experiments with a generic urban spectral library, performed in the frame of the GENLIB research project. The content of this dataset hence focuses on the optical reflectance/absorption behaviour of urban surface materials and their variations.

The spectra included in this dataset were manually sampled from the above mentioned APEX image and labeled using ancillary reference data (very high-resolution aerial imagery, Google Street View, LiDAR ...), already published urban spectral libraries, terrain knowledge and some field work. The header of the spectral library contains the various labels that were added to these spectra. These labels cover:

EAGLE Land Cover Component (LCC) from the EAGLE matrix version 3.1. Static chambers are fluxed for methane approximately weekly at the collapse sites and monthly at the permafrost sites. The flux is calculated the linear change in concentration within the chamber over a 30 minute period. The flux is reported as mgCH4/m2/d.
Data from: Do introduced apex predators suppress introduced mesopredators? A multiscale spatiotemporal study of dingoes and feral cats in Australia suggests not

1. The role of apex predators in structuring ecosystems through the suppression of mesopredator activity and abundance is receiving increasing attention, largely due to the potential benefits for biodiversity conservation. In Australia, invasive mesopredators such as feral cats (Felis catus) have been identified as major contributors to Australia's mass mammal extinctions since European arrival. The introduced dingo (Canis familiaris) has been proposed as a novel way to suppress the impacts of feral cats, however scientific evidence of the dingo's suppressive role is equivocal. 2. We used camera traps to investigate whether a large introduced predator (dingo) suppresses the activity of an established introduced mesopredator (feral cat) across a national park site conserving endangered species, and an agricultural site supporting cattle grazing enterprises. 3. Feral cats and dingoes exhibited marked overlap in both temporal and spatial activity, indicating coexistence. Some temporal separation was evident at the agricultural site, however this reflected higher diurnal activity by dingoes, not a responsive shift in cat activity. Cat activity times were unrelated to dingo presence and did not differ between areas occupied by dingoes and dingo-free areas. There was no evidence of dingoes excluding cats from patches at either site, nor was there evidence of within-night fine-scale spatiotemporal avoidance of dingoes by cats. 4. Species co-occurrence models revealed dingoes had no negative effect on the probability of cat presence. The probability of detecting a cat on the national park was significantly higher in areas with dingoes than in dingo-free areas, while on agricultural land, cat detectability did not differ between areas with and without dingoes. Cats remained active, abundant and widespread across both sites, with evidence of cats hunting and breeding successfully in areas occupied by dingoes. 5. Synthesis and applications. Our findings indicate that feral cats can coexist with dingoes, without apparent suppression of cat activity, abundance, or fitness. Proposals to reintroduce or restore dingoes and other large predators to suppress invasive mesopredators and conserve biodiversity should be carefully evaluated on a site-by-site basis, as their ability to suppress cats and protect species of conservation significance will likely be context dependent.
