Seasonal Distribution of Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea and Ammonia-Oxidation Rates in the South Atlantic Bight from April to November 2014

Previous work in nearshore waters of the Georgia USA coast has demonstrated mid-summer peaks in the abundance of Thaumarchaeota (blooms with 100 to 1,000-fold increases) accompanied by spikes in nitrite concentration. These studies were performed at one location, so the areal extent of the bloom is unknown, nor has it been demonstrated conclusively that it develops in inshore waters. We collected data on rates of ammonia oxidation and the distribution of Thaumarchaeota, ammonia-oxidizing Betaproteobacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospina and environmental variables during 6 cruises aboard the UNOLS vessel R/V Savannah from April to November 2014 on transects of the South Atlantic Bight to evaluate the areal extent and timing of the bloom. This data set includes measurements of Chlorophyll-a concentration, PAR attenuation coefficient, oxygen concenrations, temperature, salinity and nitogenous nutrient concentrations (nitrite, nitrite + nitrate, ammonium, urea), and estimates of Archaea, bacteria and diatom gene concentration based on quantitative PCR.

Soil Characteristic and Nutrient Data from the Taylor Slough, within Everglades National Park (FCE), from March 2002 to April 2004

Three random soil cores are collected once a year from TS/Ph 1b, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6b. The collection of these soil cores is in the dry season (Dec.-May). The top 10cm of soil is collected using a soil core. The soil is then analyzed to obtain its bulk density, organic matter content, TC, TN, and TP.

Continuous stream CO2 and temperature data and sensor calibration grab samples from five NEON sites (CARI, COMO, KING, MART, WALK), August 2021-April 2024.

This package contains: 1) sensor-based measurements of dissolved CO2 concentration and temperature, and 2) dissolved CO2 concentration from grab samples that were used to calibrate the sensor data, collected at five stream sites in the NEON network (CARI- Caribou Creek, AK; COMO- Como Creek, CO; KING- Kings Creek, KS; MART- Martha Creek, WA; and WALK- Walker Branch, TN) between August 2021 - April 2024. The grab sample dataset contains a combination of samples collected by NEON (DP1.20097.001) and additional samples collected by project personnel. All samples were collected using the headspace equilibration method, and dissolved CO2 concentrations were calculated using the 'neonDissGas' R package (https://github.com/NEONScience/NEON-dissolved-gas). The sensor dataset contains CO2 concentrations measured with an eosGP CO2 gas probe, averaged to 15-minute intervals and corrected to align with grab sample concentrations using a site-specific grab versus sensor regression. Due to inaccuracies in the eosGP temperature data, we instead include the temperature data from NEON that was used to convert CO2 between units of ppmv and umol/L (DP1.20053.001 for CARI, KING, MART, and WALK, and data from the multiparameter sonde for COMO). All NEON data used in this data package references the RELEASE-2025 version of each data product (downloaded February 2025).

Monthly fluorescence parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) components for Shark River Slough, Taylor Slough, and Florida Bay, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, April 2011 - ongoing

Dissolved organic matter plays an important role in biogeochemical processes in aquatic environments such as elemental cycling, microbial loop energetics, and the transport of materials across landscapes. Since most of N (> 90%) and P (around 90%) is in the organic form in the oligotrophic subtropical Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE), study of the source and dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ecosystem is crucial for the better understanding of the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients. FCE are composed of estuaries with distinct regions with different biogeochemical processes. Freshwater marsh primarily receives terrestrial input and local autochthonous vegetation production. Mangrove ecotone, nevertheless, is affected by the tidal contributions from Florida Bay and local mangrove production. Florida Bay (FB) is a wedge-shaped shallow oligotrophic estuary which lays south of the Everglades, the bottom of which is covered with a dense biomass of seagrass. The sources of both freshwater and nutrients in FCE are difficult to quantify, owing to the non-point source nature of runoff from the Everglades and the dendritic cross channels in the mangroves. Furthermore, the combination of multiple DOM sources (freshwater marsh vegetation, mangroves, phytoplankton, seagrass, etc.), and the potential seasonal variability of their relative contribution, along with the history of (photo)chemical and microbial diagenetic processing, and complex advective circulation, makes the study of DOM dynamics in FCE particularly difficult using standard schemes of estuarine ecology. Quantitative information of DOM is very useful to investigate the biogeochemical cycling of DOM to a certain degree, however, qualitative information is necessary to better understand the source and dynamics of DOM. Since fluorescence spectroscopic techniques are very sensitive, quick and simple, they have been applied to investigate the fate of DOM in estuaries. Here, we have quantified a series of

Chloride Concentrations, Conductivity, and Water Temperature Data from Lake Mendota and Lake Monona Madison, WI: December 2019 – April 2021

Conductivity and chloride were measured for 2 years in Lake Mendota and Lake Monona in Madison, WI. Conductivity was continuously measured (every 30 minutes) on under-ice buoys in the eplimnia (1-2m below the surface) and hypolimnia (1m off the bottom of the lake) of the lakes. Depth-discrete chloride grab samples were collected from the lakes quarterly. Profile sampling in Mendota, which is approximately 25 m deep, occurred every 5m from 0-20m and at 23.5m. Profile sampling in Monona, which is approximately 21m deep, occurred every 4m from 0-20m. This data was needed for a master’s research thesis with the goal of identifying the lakes' mixing dynamics and how salinization may impact them.

Dissolved inorganic nutrients including 5 macro nutrients: silicate, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium from water column bottle samples collected between October and April at Palmer Station, 1991 - 2025.

The inorganic plant macronutrients dissolved phosphate, silicate, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium are the major sources of nutrition for phytoplankton growth in seawater (with sunlight and inorganic carbon). Macronutrient distributions reflect the large-scale circulation patterns in the oceans and are useful properties to delineate water masses. Dissolved inorganic nutrients samples are typically collected in every Niskin bottle sample collected at and near Palmer Station, Anvers Island, Antarctica on the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Water samples are collected throughout the water column at stations within the Palmer LTER region (primarily B and E, to 50m and 65m respectively). Beginning in the 2020-2021 season, Station B is no longer sampled. In Antarctic waters, dissolved inorganic macronutrients are seldom depleted to limiting concentrations except during heavy prolonged phytoplankton blooms. This is due to the fact that phytoplankton growth is more often limited by light or iron, and to the short growing season. Water samples are analyzed for dissolved nutrients with recognized standard oceanographic protocols for nutrient autoanalyzers (continuous flow analyzers).

National Survey on the Effects of COVID-19 on the Wellbeing of Mexican Households (ENCOVID-19 - APRIL 2022)

<p>Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the ENCOVID-19 provides information on the well-being of Mexican households in four main domains: labor, income, mental health, and food insecurity. It offers timely information to understand the social consequences of the pandemic and the lockdown measures. It is a project consisting of a series of cross-sectional telephone surveys collected in key moments of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the four main domains and a set of COVID19-related questions, the survey includes new key indicators every month to capture the impact of the pandemic on issues like education, social programs, and crime. This is the eleventh dataset of the project, corresponding to April 2022, collected 24 months after the lockdown began in Mexico. Data collection was performed from March 17 to May 2, 2022.</p>

Mangrove Coast Collaborative Project, Hydrologic monitoring data in mangrove forests, Jobos Bay NERR, April 2024 - December 2024

The dataset describes the hydrologic conditions of the soil porewater (water level, conductivity, and temperature) at a depth of ~70 cm below ground in six mangrove forest locations in Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (JBNERR) at 30-minute intervals between April 2024 to December 2024. Locations of minimal forest recovery following the effects of Hurricane Maria (September 2017) were identified and selected for hydrologic monitoring coincident with sites sampled for structural metrics in 2022. One reference site, defined as a site that was observed to be recovering following the hurricane, was selected in black mangrove forest. Two of the six sampling locations were selected to monitor effects of human encroachment on the western boundary of the reserve. These two sites were not coincident with structural sampling plots established in 2022. This dataset is associated with the MCC Catalyst Project entitled Limits of Resilience (2023-2025) funded by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) Science Collaborative.
