Smartwatch gait dataset in simulated Parkinson's disease restricted arm swing conditions
<p>Movement data was collected through smartwatches to monitor gait impairments in healthy subjects. </p> <p>The dataset collected for this study consists of triaxial acceleration and triaxial gyroscope data from 24 subjects when performing a set of gait activities while wearing a smartwatch in their preferred wrist. Each participant performed three gait activities twice, 30 meters straight walk while carrying progressively heavier loads (0 kg, 2 kg, and 4 kg) to simulate restricted arm swing. So, considering that there were 24 participants, 3 different activities and each activity performed twice, a total of 144 data files were obtained.</p> <p>Data was collected using a sample rate of 50Hz. Leaf litter collected using baskets over the middle of the channel in Prieta arm B and Gatos
This is a long-term monitoring of leaf litter inputs into Prieta Stream, arm B, and into the Gatos stream. The monitoring is conducted using litter traps similar tho those used in other LTER project. Baskets are suspended over the channel and are emptied every other week. All material is dried and identified. Localizing Spherical Fiducials in C‐arm Based Cone‐Beam CT
<p>This dataset was acquired as part of the work described in: "Localizing spherical fiducials in C-arm based cone-beam CT", Z. Yaniv, Med. Phys., Vol. 36(11), pp. 4957-4966, 2009, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1118/1.3233684">doi.org/10.1118/1.3233684</a>.</p> <p>The data includes two phantom imaging studies acquired with a Cone-Beam CT (CBCT) system. Each of the two datasets includes projection images (cine loops) and 3D reconstructions. Additionally, the data includes the CBCT system's projection matrices and MATLAB code for reading the projection images and overlaying epipolar lines onto them. All images are stored in the DICOM format.</p> <p>The full MATLAB code for fiducial localization described in the manuscript is available <a href="https://www.yanivresearch.info/software/cbctSphericalFiducialLocalization.zip">here</a>.</p> <p> </p>
The One-Armed Spiral Instability in Neutron Star Mergers and its Detectability in Gravitational Waves
<p>We distribute complete gravitational-wave signals in the Advanced LIGO band (10 Hz - 8192 Hz) of the inspiral and merger of two neutron stars. These waveforms been constructed by hybridizing numerical-relativity data obtained with the WhiskyTHC code [1] with tidal effective-one-body waveforms [2,3]. Real-world grasp data of a dual-arm Yumi robot with a parallel gripper and suction cup end-effectors
<p>The attached txt file contains indexes to a cleaner subset of the data issued in the first version.</p> <p>Note: <br>Version 1 contains samples with failure cases due to environment constraints, which work well for the platform used in GraspAgent 1.0 (https://doi.org/10.1109/LRA.2024.3502066). However, this can degrade the performance if used on another platform with different constraints. To solve this, version 2 reports a subset of the raw data, excluding the failure modes due to environmental causes. </p>
Piezoresistive sensor fiber composites based on silicone elastomers for the monitoring of the position of a robot arm
<p>Combining conductive fillers like carbon black with elastomers allows the development of soft elastomer strain sensors that can reach very large elongations, an important requirement for many robotic applications. However, when the conductive filler is introduced in the polymer, significant stiffening occurs, affecting the mechanical properties, e.g. Young’s Modulus, of the soft structure. In this attempt, single piezoresistive fiber composites were successfully fabricated, without drastically increasing the stiffness. Two silicone elastomers that are widely used in robotic applications were examined as matrix materials. Furthermore, modeling the stresses exerted on the fiber inside the composite was successfully used to predict the detachment of fiber inside the matrix, observed by visual inspection. For the PDMS based composite, pre-straining improved sensor properties, which could be confirmed for the monitoring of the movement of the crane robot. The results showed that the pre-strained piezoresistive sensor fiber-matrix composites positions of the robot crane can be monitored even at low strains.</p>
A Dataset of Multilingual Facebook Comments on Moros and Armed Conflict in the Southern Philippines
<p>This dataset is a collection of 12,478 social media comments found on the official Facebook pages of ten Philippine newspapers, T<em>he Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin, The Philippine Star, The Manila Times, Sunstar Cebu, Sunstar Davao, Cebu Daily News, The Freeman, Sunstar Davao, MindaNews, </em>and <em>The Mindanao Times</em>, spanning the years 2015, 2017 and 2019. The comments contain terms related to the Moro identity and the Mamasapano Clash, the Marawi Siege and the establishment of BARMM in the southern Philippines, allowing researchers to study semantic fields with regard to Muslims and the relationship between the texts and the source newspaper, their region of origin, and political administration, among other variables. Arm gesture dataset based on IMU data captured from the Technaid human-robot interaction system
<p>Two files with a dataset of ten different/independent hand gestures are provided (seven static gestures and three dynamic gestures). The data were generated in a IMU system with five sensors worn in the right forearm, right arm, chest, left arm and left forearm of a human. The Technaid human-robot interaction system was used to captured the data. The file "datasetStaticGestures.mat" was used to train and test a classifier whose purpose is the recognition of static gestures. On the other hand, the file "datasetDynamicGestures.mat" was used to train and test a classifier whose purpose is the recognition of dynamic gestures. The latter file contains an extra class (gesture) which represents non-gestures.</p>
Biplane fluoroscopy derived humerus and scapula kinematics during arm elevation and rotation
<p>This dataset contains torso, scapula, and humerus kinematics from 20 healthy subjects performing coronal plane abduction, scapular plane abduction, forward elevation, internal external rotation at 90º of abduction, and internal external rotation in adduction. The humerus and scapula were imaged at 100 Hz using a biplane fluoroscopy system. 3D models of the humerus and scapula were constructed from each subject’s CT scan. Model-based markerless tracking ascertained the 3D position and orientation of each bone model by semi-automatically aligning digitally reconstructed radiographs against each frame of the biplane fluoroscopy recordings. The kinematics of the torso were measured using skin marker motion capture.</p>
Data from: Arm waving in stylophoran echinoderms: three-dimensional mobility analysis illuminates cornute locomotion
<p>The locomotion strategies of fossil invertebrates are typically interpreted on the basis of morphological descriptions. However, it has been shown that homologous structures with disparate morphologies in extant invertebrates do not necessarily correlate with differences in their locomotory capability. Here, we present a new methodology for analysing locomotion in fossil invertebrates with a rigid skeleton through an investigation of a cornute stylophoran, an extinct fossil echinoderm with enigmatic morphology that has made its mode of locomotion difficult to reconstruct. We determined the range of motion of a stylophoran arm based on digitized three-dimensional morphology of an early Ordovician form, <i>Phyllocystis crassimarginata</i>. Our analysis showed that efficient arm-forward epifaunal locomotion based on dorsoventral movements, as previously hypothesized for cornute stylophorans, was not possible for this taxon; locomotion driven primarily by lateral movement of the proximal aulacophore was more likely. 3D digital modelling provides an objective and rigorous methodology for illuminating the movement capabilities and locomotion strategies of fossil invertebrates.</p>

New giant carnivorous dinosaur reveals convergent evolutionary trends in theropod arm reduction
<p>Giant carnivorous dinosaurs such as <em>Tyrannosaurus rex</em> and abelisaurids are characterized by highly reduced forelimbs that stand in contrast to their huge dimensions, massive skulls, and obligate bipedalism. Another group that follows this pattern, yet is still poorly known, is the Carcharodontosauridae: dominant predators that inhabited most continents during the Early Cretaceous and reached their largest sizes in Aptian-Cenomanian times. Despite many discoveries over the last three decades, aspects of their anatomy, especially with regard to the skull, forearm, and feet, remain poorly known. Here we report a new carcharodontosaurid, <em>Meraxes gigas</em>, gen. et sp. nov., based on a specimen recovered from the Upper Cretaceous Huincul Formation of northern Patagonia, Argentina. Phylogenetic analysis places <em>Meraxes</em> among derived Carcharodontosauridae, in a clade with other massive South American species. <em>Meraxes</em> preserves novel anatomical information for derived carcharodontosaurids, including an almost complete forelimb that provides evidence for convergent allometric trends in forelimb reduction among three lineages of large-bodied, megapredatory non-avian theropods, including a remarkable degree of parallelism between the latest-diverging tyrannosaurids and carcharodontosaurids. This trend, coupled with a likely lower bound on forelimb reduction, hypothesized to be about 0.4 forelimb/femur length, combined to produce this short-armed pattern in theropods. The almost complete cranium of <em>Meraxes</em> permits new estimates of skull length in <em>Giganotosaurus</em>, which is among the longest for theropods. <em>Meraxes</em> also provides further evidence that carchardontosaurids reached peak diversity shortly before their extinction with high rates of trait evolution in facial ornamentation possibly linked to a social signaling role.</p>
Feasibility and acceptability of personalized breast cancer screening (DECIDO Study): A single-arm proof-of-concept trial
<p>The aim of this study was to assess the acceptability and feasibility of offering risk-based breast cancer screening and its integration into regular clinical practice. A single-arm proof-of-concept trial was conducted with a sample of 387 women aged 40–50 years residing in the city of Lleida (Spain). The study intervention consisted of breast cancer risk estimation, risk communication and screening recommendations, and a follow-up. A polygenic risk score with 83 single nucleotide polymorphisms was used to update the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium risk model and estimate the 5-year absolute risk of breast cancer. The women expressed a positive attitude towards varying the frequency of breast screening according to individual risk and, especially, more frequently inviting women at higher-than-average risk. A lower intensity screening for women at lower risk was not as welcome, although half of the participants would accept it. Knowledge of the benefits and harms of breast screening was low, especially with regard to false positives and overdiagnosis. The women expressed a high understanding of individual risk and screening recommendations. The participants' intention to participate in risk-based screening and satisfaction at 1-year were very high.</p>

Data from: Asynchronous life histories generate uneven arms races and impact the maintenance of mutualisms
<p>Mutualisms constitute a diverse class of ecologically important interactions, yet their ecological and evolutionary stability remain topics of debate in coevolutionary theory. Recent theoretical and empirical work has suggested that coevolutionary arms races may be involved in the maintenance of mutualistic interactions, sustaining mutually beneficial outcomes for interacting species while producing exaggerated traits. Here we present an individual-based model that evaluates how asynchronous life histories – i.e., partners with different average lifespans – change the dynamics of trait coevolution, the expected fitness outcomes for species involved, and the dynamics of selection differentials across time for each species. Results indicate that a longer-lived mutualist will consistently 'lose' an otherwise balanced coevolutionary arms race, being outpaced in both the mean trait value and fitness outcome compared to a shorter-lived partner. Furthermore, linear selection differentials on mutualistic traits become increasingly divergent as life histories become increasingly asynchronous, with the longer-lived species experiencing persistent directional selection and the shorter-lived species experiencing weaker, more inconsistent selection. These results suggest that asynchronous life histories can complicate the maintenance of mutualistic interactions via coevolutionary arms-races and that detecting coevolution via selection differentials may be difficult when life histories are sufficiently divergent.</p>
