An Empirical Evaluation of Video Conferencing Systems Used in Industry, Academia, and Entertainment

Video Conferencing Systems~(VCS) are used daily--at work, in online education, and for get-togethers with friends and family. Many new VCSs have emerged in the past decade and a new market-leader has risen during the coronavirus period of 2020. Understanding how these systems work could help us improve them rapidly. However, no experimental comparison of such systems currently exists.

We propose a method to compare VCSs in real-world operation and implement it as a tool. Our method considers 4 main real-world experiments. Each captures different aspects, such as communication channels~(audio, video, audio-video), types of network environments~(e.g., Ethernet, WiFi, 4G), and reports system and network utilization. We conduct real-world experiments with 3 VCSs, Zoom, Microsoft Team, and Discord.

This dataset is the result of our experiments conducted with the Online Video Conference Benchmarking tool.

Secondary Data from Insights from Publishing Open Data in Industry-Academia Collaboration

Authors

Per Erik Strandberg [1], Philipp Peterseil [2], Julian Karoliny [3], Johanna Kallio [4], and Johannes Peltola [4].

[1] Westermo Network Technologies AB (Sweden).
[2] Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria)
[3] Silicon Austria Labs GmbH (Austria).
[4] VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. (Finland).

Description

This data is to accompany a paper submitted to Elsevier's data in brief in 2024, with the title Insights from Publishing Open Data in Industry-Academia Collaboration.

Tentative Abstract: Effective data management and sharing are critical success factors in industry-academia collaboration. This paper explores the motivations and lessons learned from publishing open data sets in such collaborations. Through a survey of participants in a European research project that published 13 data sets, and an analysis of metadata from almost 281 thousand datasets in Zenodo, we collected qualitative and quantitative results on motivations, achievements, research questions, licences and file types. Through inductive reasoning and statistical analysis we found that planning the data collection is essential, and that only few datasets (2.4%) had accompanying scripts for improved reuse. We also found that authors are not well aware of the importance of licences or which licence to choose. Finally, we found that data with a synthetic origin, collected with simulations and potentially mixed with real measurements, can be very meaningful, as predicted by Gartner and illustrated by many datasets collected in our research project.

Secondary data from Survey

The file
survey.txt
contains secondary data from a survey of participants that published open data sets in the 3-year European research project InSecTT.

Secondary data from Zenodo

The file
secondary_data_zenodo.json
contains secondary data from an analysis of data sets published in Zenodo. It is accompanied with a
py
-file and a
ipynb
-file to serve as examples.

License

This data is licenced with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Agile Accelerator Program: From Industry-Academia Collaboration to Effective Agile Training

The agile accelerator program takes place in a Brazilian technology park, as a collaboration between a university and a world-renowned technology company, specialized in agile development and consulting. This partnership has 8-year long with the main goal of preparing undergraduate students to work in high-performance agile teams. This partnership created a culturally rich environment for student learning while influencing other companies to follow the same initiative within this technology park. We conducted a Case Study aiming to characterize this partnership (explaining how it works) and the resulting program, understanding the benefits to the program students. Our results point out the importance of the kind of partnership that provides an immersive learning environment to students, where students can learn empirically, with real projects and real stakeholders and how important it was for the program's former students to enter the job market. This successful enhanced students' training program on agile software development through the blending of culture between institutions can be of inspiration to those interested in aiming to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

Career Within Academia, Survey Report: Embedded Discrimination and Career Tips for junior researchers.

We have asked junior researchers that are or have been engaged in a career within Norwegian academia to share their career experience and perspectives. Despite our comprehensive questionnaire, we collected 193 responses coming from various fields and with different levels of seniority, with a survey combining both closed-ended and open-ended questions.

A baseline hypothesis in academic policy is that, by increasing the competition to reach a certain position, the best candidates will be selected. We here examine the consequence of this selective path on the competitors and how the selection criteria is perceived by participants in our study.

In the second document we disclose the open answers provided by the respondents. To facilitate the navigation in the wide set of tips collected, we subdivided the answer in categories:
Work/personal life balance, Academic Career Planning, which contains Network, general strategy tips, CV development, scientific communication and advisor, and Career outside academia tips. At the end of these sections, we collected longer and more comprehensive suggestions in the category "Broad tips".
As it can be noted by the answers, a large set of concepts have been discussed by the respondents. Further analysis concerning associations between these observations and its consequences for the candidates, on career tips from researchers to junior researchers**, will be provided in forthcoming publications based on the collected data.

CLS INFRA T3.5 Interviews: Understanding User Requirements Beyond Academia

The CLS INFRA research team at Trinity College Dublin, Jennifer Edmond, Associate Professor at Trinity College Dublin and the director of the Trinity Centre for Digital Humanities, and Vera Yakupova, Research Assistant at the Trinity Centre for Digital Humanities, conducted in the framework of the project a series of 15 focussed interviews with professionals beyond academia to understand user needs for computational literary studies beyond academia, and to develop user scenarios in this respect.

This task’s team works closely with Work Packages 2 and 3 to profile potential users of infrastructure for literary analysis from beyond the academic sphere, as maximising use and impact is a key driver for sustainability. CLS INFRA has great potential to contribute to the work of many professions, and take advantage of the opportunity to maximise the use and impact of the infrastructure would function as a key driver for sustainability. The gap to be bridged, however, is in the understanding of what these non-professional researchers would need in terms of support and contextualisation of materials in order to be able to use them. Based on research into applied uses of literature (fiction), narratives, and storytelling, we profiled potential users of infrastructure for literary analysis from beyond the academic sphere. The research findings are detailed in our Report "D3.5 User needs beyond academic research for Computational Literary Analysis".

This dataset includes transcripts of the 15 interviews with and without mark ups. For context and as supporting information for this research, the dataset also includes a documentation on the interviews ("Documentation: 'Users Beyond Academia' Interview Dataset"), a summary of the interview report ("3.5 Interview Report Summary"), and the presentation on this research at the DH2023 conference, July 10-14, in Graz, Austria.

Data from: Agreements between industry and academia on publication rights: a retrospective study of protocols and publications of randomized clinical trials

Background: Little is known about publication agreements between industry and academic investigators in trial protocols and the consistency of these agreements with corresponding statements in publications. We aimed to investigate (i) the existence and types of publication agreements in trial protocols, (ii) the completeness and consistency of the reporting of these agreements in subsequent publications, and (iii) the frequency of co-authorship by industry employees. Methods and Findings: We used a retrospective cohort of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) based on archived protocols approved by six research ethics committees between 13 January 2000 and 25 November 2003. Only RCTs with industry involvement were eligible. We investigated the documentation of publication agreements in RCT protocols and statements in corresponding journal publications. Of 647 eligible RCT protocols, 456 (70.5%) mentioned an agreement regarding publication of results. Of these 456, 393 (86.2%) documented an industry partner's right to disapprove or at least review proposed manuscripts; 39 (8.6%) agreements were without constraints of publication. The remaining 24 (5.3%) protocols referred to separate agreement documents not accessible to us. Of those 432 protocols with an accessible publication agreement, 268 (62.0%) trials were published. Most agreements documented in the protocol were not reported in the subsequent publication (197/268 [73.5%]). Of 71 agreements reported in publications, 52 (73.2%) were concordant with those documented in the protocol. In 14 of 37 (37.8%) publications in which statements suggested unrestricted publication rights, at least one co-author was an industry employee. In 25 protocol-publication pairs, author statements in publications suggested no constraints, but 18 corresponding protocols documented restricting agreements. Conclusions: Publication agreements constraining academic authors' independence are common. Journal articles seldom report on publication agreements, and, if they do, statements can be discrepant with the trial protocol.
