Relationships between needs satisfaction and the quality of motivation with academic engagement in pre-service physical education teachers

<p><span>Academic engagement has been identified as a key determinant in the learning process. Although research on initial teacher education has focused on understanding the mechanism that can foster strong academic engagement, little is known about the roles that basic psychological need satisfaction and academic motivation may perform. The objective of this research was to examine the predictive relationships between basic psychological need satisfaction (i.e., autonomy, competence, relatedness, and novelty) and academic engagement, considering the role of academic motivation. A cross-sectional and non-randomized design was used. A total of 920 students (61.8% male; <em>M</em>age = 24.73; <em>SD </em>age =5.34) participated from different universities. The results from structural equation modelling revealed that competence and novelty satisfaction significantly and positively predicted academic engagement. Autonomous motivation significantly mediated the association of competence and autonomy satisfaction with academic engagement. This research underscores the importance of considering competence and autonomy satisfaction as facilitators of autonomous motivation and academic engagement in pre-service teachers. </span></p>

Moving academic conferences online: understanding patterns of delegate engagement

Scientific conferences are a key component of academic communication and development. During the COVID-19 pandemic in-person conferences are rapidly moving online, yet these virtual events may not provide the same opportunities as in-person conferences. If virtual meetings are to continue to provide effective communication and networking between researchers and stakeholders, they must be adapted to increase delegate engagement and enthusiasm. Here we present a case study of a recent medium-sized online conference. We assessed the behaviour and engagement of delegates with different components of the meeting using data from website analytics and post-conference surveys. Behaviour was variable across the available events, with talks being particularly popular but engagement with social and networking opportunities was variable. Our conclusions have been summarised in six recommendations to support future online conference organisers in enhancing engagement with their events.

Data for: ACADEMIC RESILIENCE OF STUDENTS TO SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT THROUGH PERCEIVED EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FROM THE INSTRUCTOR, AND GENDER VARIATION

<p>Students with high academic resilience tend to cope and overcome impediments throughout the educational process. Published scholarly works have accentuated that academically resilient students are more engaged in school than their counterparts. Studies have also stressed the importance of instructor emotional support to students&rsquo; engagement in schooling. This current study is engrossed in examining academic resiliency vis-&agrave;-vis school engagement via perceived instructor emotional support from 910 samples of undergraduate students (Male: N=536, 58.9%, and Female: N=374, 41.1%) from various institutes at City College of Angeles, Philippines. Additionally, it aimed to assess the significant difference between gender concerning the three variables. Mann-Whitney U and Independent Samples T-Test were used to determine the significant difference concerning gender in academic resilience, perceived instructor emotional support, and school engagement. The findings revealed no significant difference between gender concerning school engagement, and a significant difference was found for academic resilience and perceived instructor emotional support. Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS4 was performed for the mediation analysis. The findings displayed that (1) ARS is significantly related to and predicts school engagement; (2) academic resilience is positively associated with and leverages instructor emotional support; (3) perceived instructor emotional support is significantly linked to and triggers school engagement; (4) most importantly, the relationship between academic resilience and school engagement is partially mediated by perceived instructor emotional support. The results emphasized the significance of the emotional support provided by instructors in fostering resilience and engagement in undergraduate students. Findings were discoursed by highlighting the importance of promoting personal and contextual resources in the college to promote students&rsquo; overall well-being.</p>
