Assessing suspended sediment fluxes with acoustic doppler current profilers: case study from large rivers in Russia

<p>The dataset contains measurements of water discharge by Teledyne RDInstruments RioGrande WorkHorse ADCP unit with a working frequency of 600kHz mounted on a moving boat in 6 areas over large rivers of Russia. The dataset comprises the four largest Arctic Siberian rivers and included continuous ADCP measurements done in 2018-2020 at constant crossection at each river located upper from the impact of recipient seas (tides, surges) near the cities of Salekhard (Ob River), Igarka (Yenisey River), Zhigansk (Lena river) and Chersky (Kolyma River).&nbsp; Another area includes ADCP measurements over 20 transects (named S1&hellip;S26, fig. 2) in the lower 200 km of the river Selenga on 27-31July 2018. Additionally, the dataset contains ADCP measurements at 38 points along the Moskva River (named M1, M2&hellip;) and 17 tributaries (named T01, T02&hellip;) done during 2019-2020.</p> <p>This is a supporting material to a manuscript submitted to &laquo;Big Earth Data&raquo; journal</p>

2012-2013 Sub-ice Current Velocities Recorded with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler

Between 26 November 2012 and 22 January 2013, a SonTek Argonaut-XR 1.5 MHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was fixed at the bottom of the Limno Sampling Hole in Lake Hoare, looking downward through the water column. Every 30 seconds, the ADCP measured horizontal and vertical current velocities in six, 50-cm-thick cells between 0.5 and 3.5 m below the lake ice. The observation interval became deeper over time as the ADCP platform melted into the lake ice and the lake ice thinned. Data collected from 26 to 30 November represent pre-discharge data when wind and solar radiation were the only forces acting on the lake. Data from 30 November to 8 December transition from pre-discharge to spring freshet conditions on 6 December. Spring freshet was the most dynamic period observed with highest velocities recorded. Data from 8 to 13 December transitioned from the end of spring freshet on 10 December to summer diurnal discharge conditions. Data from the remaining datasets, 13 to 22 December, 22 to 29 December, 29 December to 6 January, 6 to 13 January, and 13 to 22 January, reflect conditions during summer diurnal stream discharge, especially data from 29 December to 6 January. Large repeated measures experiments of acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) streamflow measurements under steady flow conditions (Chauvan 2016 regatta)

<p>From 8 to 10 November 2016, 50 laboratories or teams (from 8 different countries) with 50 ADCPs, simultaneously conducted more than 600 ADCP discharge measurements in steady flow conditions (around 14 m<sup>3</sup>/s released by a dam), during three half-days, over 500 m along the Taurion River at Saint-Priest-de-Taurion, France. 26 cross-sections with various shapes and flow conditions, and more or less favourable conditions, were distributed along the river. 2009-10 Sub-ice Current Velocities Recorded with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler

On 7 January 2010, a SonTek Argonaut-XR 1.5 MHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was fixed at the bottom of the lake ice in the Lake Hoare Limno Hole inside the Polar Haven, looking downward through the water column. Every 10 seconds, the ADCP measured horizontal and vertical current velocities in ten, 30-cm-thick cells between 0.5 and 3.5 m below the lake ice. Over 32.5 hours, horizontal currents in the shallowest cell (0.5 to 0.8 m below lake ice) had a mean speed of 23.8 cm/sec. This speed was independently validated by lowering a SonTek handheld Acoustic Doppler Velocity (ADV) meter into the ice hole. Horizontal speeds oscillated between 10.1 and 37.5 cm/sec over the course of the ADCP dataset. Fast Fourier Transforms of x-direction velocity data from the shallowest cell identified oscillation periods of 11, 3.7, and 2.5 minutes consistent with the theoretical first-mode longitudinal surface seiche in Lake Hoare. Current direction oscillated between N 78 degrees E and N 289 degrees E along the east-west longitudinal axis of the lake, consistent with the behavior of a seiche.

N-S and E-W components of the current (averaged by cruise cycle) as measured by a shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) aboard the CCE LTER process cruise in the California Current region, 2007.

Underway measurements by the ADCP are made (about every 15 mins) on cruises to determine how fast water is moving across an entire water column, then averaged by cruise cycle. The ADCP measures the absolute speed of water currents with sound waves (Doppler effect) at multiple depths within the water column, and profile data are available immediately. For these data, the N-S and E-W components of the current were averaged by cycle.

This dataset contains measurements of shipboard ocean current speed vertical shear from an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) during the Salinity and Stratification at the Sea Ice Edge (SASSIE) field campaign. SASSIE is a NASA experiment that aims to understand how salinity anomalies in the upper ocean generated by melting sea ice affect sea surface temperature (SST), stratification, and subsequent sea-ice growth. SASSIE involved a field campaign that sampled the transition from summer melt to autumn ice advance in the Beaufort Sea during August-October 2022, making intensive in situ and remote sensing observations within ~200km of the sea ice edge.

Delta-X: Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Channel Surveys, MRD, Louisiana, 2021, V2

This dataset provides river discharge measurements collected at selected locations in the Atchafalaya and Terrebonne Basins within the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) floodplain in coastal Louisiana, USA. The measurements were made during the Delta-X 2021 field efforts from 2021-03-25 to 2021-04-11 (spring) and 2021-08-16 to 2021-09-25 (fall). Channel surveys were conducted with a Teledyne RiverPro acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) or a Sontek M9 RiverSurveyor ADCP on selected wide channels (>100 m wide) and a few selected narrow channels (approximately 10 m wide) near the Delta-X intensive study sites. River discharge was measured on cross-channel transects. Reported data include bathymetry, discharge (m3 s-1), and flow velocity.

SPURS-1 shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler data for N. Atlantic Endeavor and Knorr cruises

The SPURS (Salinity Processes in the Upper Ocean Regional Study) project is an oceanographic process study and associated field program that aim to elucidate key mechanisms responsible for near-surface salinity variations in the oceans. The project involves two field campaigns and a series of cruises in regions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans exhibiting salinity extremes. SPURS employs a suite of state-of-the-art in-situ sampling technologies that, combined with remotely sensed salinity fields from the Aquarius/SAC-D and SMOS satellites, provide a detailed characterization of salinity structure over a continuum of spatio-temporal scales. The SPURS-1 campaign involved a series of 5 cruises during 2012 - 2013 seeking to characterize the salinity structure and balance in a high salinity, high evaporation, and low rainfall region of the subtropical North Atlantic. It aims to resolve processes responsible for maintaining the subtropical surface salinity maximum in this region and within a 900 x 800-mile square study area centered at 25N, 38W. Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) provide water column current velocity profile observations. Shipborne ADCP data were collected during the 3 US cruises, using the Knorr and Endeavor 300 kHz Workhorse, 75 khz broadband and 75 khz narrowband instruments, and during the Sarmiento cruise using a 76.8 khz broadband ADCP. Corresponding ruise dates were as follows: Knorr: 6 Sept-9 Oct 2012; Sarmiento: 14 Mar-10 Apr 2013, Endeavor: 15 Mar-15 Apr 2013 and 19 Sep-13 Oct 2013. Additionally, lowered ADCP (L-ADCP) measurements were made during the Knorr cruise on every CTD cast and during the Sarmiento cruise. The ADCP data files here (1 per cruise) are for the shipborne ADCP measurements only.

The project is comprised of two field campaigns and a series of cruises in regions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans exhibiting salinity extremes. SPURS employs a suite of state-of-the-art in-situ sampling technologies that, combined with remotely sensed salinity fields from the Aquarius/SAC-D,SMAP and SMOS satellites, provide a detailed characterization of salinity structure over a continuum of spatio-temporal scales. The SPURS-2 campaign involved two month-long cruises by the R/V Revelle in August 2016 and October 2017 combined with complementary sampling on a more continuous basis over this period by the schooner Lady Amber. Focused around a central mooring located near 10N,125W, the objective of SPURS-2 was to study the dynamics of the rainfall-dominated surface ocean at the western edge of the eastern Pacific fresh pool subject to high seasonal variability and strong zonal flows associated with the North Equatorial Current and Countercurrent. Shipborne ADCP observations were made during both SPURS-2 R/V Revelle cruises. Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) provide water column current velocity profile observations. The resulting data files available here are for narrowband 75 and 150khz ADCP measurements made during the first cruise, plus narrowband (NB) 75khz and both 75khz and 150khz broadband (BB) ADCP measurements obtained during the second R/V Revelle cruise.

S-MODE L2 Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Measurements Version 1

This dataset contains shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements from the Sub-Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics Experiment (S-MODE) during a pilot campaign and two intensive operating periods (IOPs) conducted approximately 300 km offshore of San Francisco during Fall 2021, 2022, and Spring 2023. S-MODE aims to understand how ocean dynamics acting on short spatial scales influence the vertical exchange of physical and biological variables in the ocean. The ADCP was mounted to the bottom of the hulls of the research vessels deployed during each campaign, measuring horizontal and vertical currents, as well as acoustic backscatter from approximately 3 m to 50 m depth along the ship’s track. The data are available in netCDF format with dimensions of time and depth.
