Data and code for: No evidence of metabolic costs following adaptive immune activation or reactivation in house sparrows

We examined the energetic costs of immune activation by measuring both basal (BMR) and exercise-induced maximal metabolic rates (MMR) in house sparrows before and after being injected with either saline (sham) or two novel antigens (keyhole limpet haemocyanin and sheep red blood cells; KLH and SRBC, respectively) after the primary and two subsequent vaccinations. We also examined the effect of experimentally-induced breeding levels of testosterone (T) on immune responses and their metabolic costs in both males and females.

Active and low-cost hyperspectral imaging for spectral analysis in low lighting environment

Hyperspectral imaging can capture information beyond conventional RGB cameras; thus, it has many applications, such as material identification and spectral analysis. However, like many camera systems, most of the existing hyperspectral cameras are still passive imaging systems: they require external light sources to illuminate the objects to capture the spectral intensity. As a result, the collected images highly depend on the environment lighting, and the imaging system cannot function in a dark or low-lighting environment. This work develops a prototype system for active hyperspectral imaging, which actively emits different single-wavelength lights at different frequencies when imaging. This concept has several advantages: first, using the controlled lighting, the magnitude of the individual bands is normalized to extract reflectance information; second, the system is capable of collecting information at the desired spectral range by tailoring the light sources; third, an active system is mechanically easier to make, since it does not require complex band filters as used in passive systems; last, such a system may work under low light or dark environments, which greatly facilitate underground/subsurface sensing applications such as borehole based mining exploration. This prototype is achieved by using an array of low-cost and single-wavelength LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights, a remote control module controlling the LED illuminator, and the shutter of a full spectrum camera. We demonstrate that such design is feasible and could yield informative hyperspectral images for spectral analysis and machine learning-based object identification in low light or dark environments, having great potential to benefit both the academic and industry such as in geochemistry, earth science, subsurface energy, and mining.

Are breeding activities risky for northern bobwhites? An assessment of survival costs of reproduction

Behaviors associated with breeding can increase mortality risk. This increased risk can be thought of as a cost of reproduction. Increased movements prior to breeding are common as individuals search for food and breeding sites. These increased movements are thought to entail greater predation risks as individuals travel through unfamiliar areas but few studies have looked at how these prebreeding movements affect survival, especially at a fine temporal resolution. Costs of reproduction may also occur during reproduction. For birds, incubation and brood-rearing can increase predation risk because individuals spend most of their time at nest sites or with broods, which may make them more easily detected and captured by predators. Using time- and individual-specific predictors of survival, I examined the relationship between survival, movements, habitat use, and breeding status of northern bobwhites Colinus virginianus in Colorado, USA. I found that prebreeding ranges were larger for breeders (29 ha) than non-breeders (18.7 ha) but daily movement distance was not different (163 m). Range size did not affect survival; however, longer recent daily movement distances (within 10 days) resulted in higher survival. Breeding status also affected survival; laying individuals experienced the highest daily survival rates followed by incubating, non-breeding and brood-rearing individuals. Overall, there appears to be a survival cost of reproduction for individuals during brood-rearing, but I found no evidence that increased movements results in decreased survival.

Limiting scaring activities reduces economic costs associated with foraging barnacle geese: results from an individual-based model

With increasing numbers of large grazing birds on agricultural grassland, conflict with farmers is rising. One management approach to alleviate conflict allows foraging on dedicated agricultural land (accommodation areas) and nature reserves, combined with scaring on remaining agricultural land. Here, we examine the cost-effectiveness of these measures by studying the influence on barnacle goose distribution and associated economic damage.

We present an individual/agent-based model of barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) foraging on grasslands in Fryslân, the Netherlands. The model is parameterized using field observations and GPS-tracks and allows simulation of management scenarios, differing in scaring probability and accommodation area size, with different potential management costs.

Our model shows that, while yield loss decreases with higher scaring probabilities, costs of damage appraisal increase because geese graze on more fields. With small accommodation areas, achieving high scaring probabilities takes more effort and could result in goose population decline. Total management costs are lowest without scaring activity.

Synthesis and applications: Considering costs of active scaring and the need to maintain the barnacle goose population in a favourable conservation status, our model suggests that the most cost-effective scenario is to prevent disturbance of geese. A high scaring probability could be beneficial if applied in small areas, for example around sensitive crops or airfields. Scaring in large areas could result in costs outweighing benefits and a declining barnacle goose population.
