Fatigue properties of wind turbine rotor blade hybrid epoxy adhesives

<p>This dataset includes the tensile data at two different strain rates and tensile-tensile fatigue data of epoxy adhesives used in wind turbine rotor blades. SPABOND&trade; 820HTA (non-toughened) and SPABOND&trade; 840HTA (toughened) epoxy adhesives are combined at different weight proportions to develop the hybrid adhesives.&nbsp;The hybrid and&nbsp; ASTM D638-22 tensile specimen geometry (Type I and Type II) effects on fatigue performance are determined through instrumented experiments.&nbsp;</p>

The self-cleaning properties of biomimetic surfaces to repel Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes attachment, adhesion, and retention

<p>Surface hydrophobicity and roughness were determined for unmodified wax surfaces (control), biomimetic wax surfaces, and Gladioli leaves. The self-cleaning properties of the biomimetic and control surfaces were compared by measuring their propensity to repel&nbsp;<em>Escherichia coli</em> and <em>Listeria monocytogenes</em> attachment, adhesion, and retention in mono- and co-culture conditions.</p>

Statistical analysis for: Mode I fracture of beech-adhesive bondline at three different temperatures

<p>This dataset collects a raw dataset and a processed dataset derived from the raw dataset. There is a document containing the analytical code for statistical analysis of the processed dataset in .Rmd format and .html format.&nbsp;<br> <br> The study examined&nbsp;some aspects of mechanical performance of solid wood composites. We were interested in certain properties of solid wood composites made using different adhesives with different grain orientations at the bondline, then treated at different temperatures prior to testing.&nbsp;</p> <p>Performance was tested by assessing fracture energy and critical fracture energy, lap shear strength, and compression strength of the composites. Antibacterial Hydrogel Adhesives based on Bifunctional Telechelic Dendritic-Linear-Dendritic Block Copolymers

<p><span>Antibiotic resistant pathogens have been declared by WHO as one of the major public health threats facing humanity.<span>&nbsp; </span>For that reason, there is an urgent need for materials with inherent antibacterial activity able to replace the use of antibiotics, and in this context, hydrogels have emerged as a promising strategy. Herein, we introduce the next generation of cationic hydrogels with antibacterial activity and high versatility that can be cured on demand in less than twenty seconds by using Thiolene Click Chemistry (TEC) in aqueous conditions. The approach capitalizes on a two-component system: i) telechelic polyester based Dendritic-Linear-Dendritic (DLDs) block copolymers of different generations heterofunctionalized with allyl and ammonium groups, as well as ii) polyethylene glycol (PEG) crosslinkers functionalized with thiol groups. These hydrogels resulted in highly tunable materials where the antibacterial performance can be adjusted by modifying the crosslinking density. Off-stoichiometric hydrogels showed narrow antibacterial activity directed towards Gram-negative bacteria. The presence of pending allyls opens up many possibilities for functionalization with biologically interesting molecules. <span>&nbsp;</span>As a proof-of-concept, hydrophilic cysteamine hydrochloride as well as N-hexyl-4-mercaptobutanamide, as an example of a thiol with a hydrophobic alkyl chain, generated three-component networks. In the case of cysteamine derivatives, a broader antibacterial activity was noted than the two-component networks, inhibiting also the growth of Gram-positive bacteria. Additionally, these systems presented high versatility, with storage modulus values ranging from 270 to 7024 Pa and different stability profiles ranging from 1 to 56 days in swelling experiments. Good biocompatibility towards skin cells as well as strong adhesion to multiple surfaces, place these hydrogels as interesting alternatives to conventional antibiotics.</span></p>

Nanohydrogel Brushes for Switchable Underwater Adhesion - Dataset

<p>Abstract of the related article: In nature, living systems commonly adopt the switchable friction/adhesion mechanism during locomotion. For example, geckos can move on ceilings, relying on the reversible attachment and detachment of their feet on substrate surfaces. Inspired by this scientists have used different materials to mimic natural dynamic friction/adhesion systems. However, synthetic systems usually cannot work in water environments and are also limited to single-contact interfaces, while nature has provided living systems with complex features to perform energy dissipation and adhere on multiple contact interfaces. Here, for the first time, we report the design, synthesis, and testing of a novel double-sided synthetic construct that relies on nanohydrogel brushes to provide simultaneous friction switching on each side of the membrane that separates the nanohydrogel fibers. This highly tunable response is linked to the swelling and shrinkage of the brushes in basic/acid media. Such a system shows three different friction states, which depend on the combination of pH control of the two membrane sides. Importantly, each side of the membrane can independently provide continuous but stable friction switching from high to ultralow friction coefficients in a wet environment under high load conditions. An in-depth theoretical study is performed to explore the mechanisms governing the hydration state responsible for the observed switching. This novel design opens a promising route for the development of new solutions for intelligent devices, which can adapt to multistimulus-responsive complex environments.</p> <p>The dataset file names are given by the related figure names. TERMINUS WP5: Chain Extension Kinetics for Solvent-Free Adhesive Components

<p>In two-component polyurethane (PUR) adhesives, polyols and isocyanates are reacted to produce binding media.In order to obtain a Solvent-Free prepolymer as one of PUR components, an excess of macrodiols can be reacted with diisocyanates.The addition reaction between OH and NCO functional groups is frequently called &ldquo;Chain-Extension&rdquo;.PUR polymerization rarely follows classical kinetic theories, therefore, experimental study was carried out to monitor the rate of polymerization.Small specimens of the reaction mixture were periodically withdrawn during the course of Chain Extension.The amount of isocyanates was measured by titration.Four different macrodiols and two diisocyanates were tested at several temperatures and concentrations.Some data on two reactions from previous Dataset 5-1 &ldquo;Adhesive_Chain_Extension_WP5&rdquo; is also included to broaden the range of studied temperatures. Collected data can be used for future kinetic studies of both Solvent-Based and Solvent-Free PUR adhesives.</p>

The dataset for the mechanical parameters of the ultraviolet adhesive polymer-inorganic interfaces

<p>We perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with full-atom representation&nbsp;to investigate the mechanical properties of interfaces between polymers, including seven ultraviolet (UV) adhesive polymers and other common polymers, and inorganic substrates (Si, SiO<sub>2</sub>, ZrO<sub>2</sub>). The interfacial mechanical parameters such as strength and energy release rate in the cohesive zone models (CZMs) are calculated from the MD simulations. The typical traction separation and shear deformation are applied to the polymer-inorganic interface. Different interfacial crosslink densities of the polymer-inorganic interfaces are also considered. The dataset provided here can be used as the input for failure prediction and design optimization by the finite element analysis (FEA), for example, layered polymer-inorganic composites used in electronic device packages.</p>

Mimicking Natural Deterrent Strategies in Plants using Adhesive Spheres

<p>With a continuous increase in world population and food production, chemical pesticide use is growing accordingly, yet unsustainably. As chemical pesticides are harmful to the environment and pests develop resistance, sustainable and effective pesticide alternatives are needed. Inspired by nature, we mimic one defense strategy of plants, glandular trichomes, to shift away from using chemical pesticides by moving towards a physical immobilization strategy via adhesive particles. Through a controlled oxidation of a biobased starting material, triglyceride oils, an adhesive material is created while monitoring the reactive intermediates. After being milled into particles, nanoindentation shows these particles to be adhesive even at low contact forces. A suspension of particles is then sprayed onto chrysanthemum leaves and found to be highly effective at immobilizing a target pest, thrips, \textit{Frankliniella occidentalis}. Typical of small arthropod pests, thrips cause crop damage predominantly through virus transfer, which is prevented by their immobilization. We show that through this scalable fabrication process, biosourced materials can be used to create an effective, sustainable physical pesticide.</p>
