OMPS-NPP L2 LP USask Aerosol Extinction Vertical Profile swath daily V1.1
<p>The USask OMPS-LP L2 2D Aerosol v1.1 product provides stratospheric aerosol extinction retrievals performed at the University of Saskatchewan for the central slit of the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS-LP) instrument on the Suomi-NPP satellite. The two-dimensional retrieval algorithm accounts for variation in the along orbital track dimension, retrieving an entire orbit simultaneously instead of treating each image independently. Stratospheric aerosol is retrieved from approximately the thermal tropopause to 30 km on a 1 km grid with a vertical resolution of approximately 2 km, and is assumed to be sulfate aerosol following a log-normal particle size distribution.</p> <p>Each granule contains data from the daylight portion of each orbit measured for a full month. Spatial coverage is global (-82 to +82 degrees latitude), and there are about 14.5 orbits per day, each has typically 160 profiles with an along orbital track sampling of 125 km. The files are written using NetCDF4.</p>

Measurement report: The importance of biomass burning in light extinction and direct radiative effect of urban aerosol during the COVID-19 lockdown in Xi'an, China
<p>To explore the impacts of anthropogenic emissions on aerosol optical properties and direct radiative effect (DRE), a series of real-time measurements was conducted in an urban area of China before and during the lockdown of Coronavirus Disease 2019. The generalized addictive model analysis shows that the light extinction coefficient (<em>b</em>ext) decreased largely during the lockdown due to the sharp reductions in anthropogenic emissions. Organic aerosol was the largest contributor to <em>b</em>ext based on the ridge regression analysis. A hybrid environmental receptor model combining with chemical and optical variables shows that <em>b</em>ext from biomass burning increased in the lockdown due to the undiminished needs of residential cooking and heating in winter. Biomass burning contributed the largest positive effect to aerosol DRE in the atmosphere during the lockdown, highlighting the importance of controlling biomass burning for mitigating climate change in China in the future.</p>
OMPS-NPP L2 LP Aerosol Extinction Vertical Profile swath daily 3slit V2 (OMPS_NPP_LP_L2_AER_DAILY) at GES DISC
The OMPS-NPP L2 LP Aerosol Extinction Vertical Profile swath daily 3slit (AER) product contains the retrieved aerosol extinction coefficients measured by the Ozone Mapping and Profiling Suite (OMPS) Limb-Profiler (LP) sensor on the Suomi-NPP satellite. The AER product measures stratospheric aerosol abundance and evolution at 6 wavelengths (510, 600, 675, 745, 869 and 997 nm) to complement the OMPS LP measurements of stratospheric and mesospheric profile ozone. This product replaces the previous single wavelength 675 nm (AER675) product. Each granule contains data from the daylight portion of each orbit measured for a full day. Spatial coverage is global (-90 to 90 degrees latitude), and there are about 14.5 orbits per day each measuring three limb profiles spaced approximately 250 km in the cross-track direction. The profiles are measured from the ground up to about 80 km with a vertical resolution of the retrieved profiles of approximately 1.8 km.The files are written using the Hierarchical Data Format Version 5 or HDF5.
ATom: Aerosol Extinction and Absorption Measurements from SOAP Instrument, 2018
This dataset contains one-second aerosol extinction and absorption measurements from the Spectrometers for Optical Aerosol Properties (SOAP) instrument aboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft during the ATom-4 campaign that occurred in 2018. SOAP is a compact, low maintenance instrument that measures aerosol extinction and absorption at 532 nm. Aerosol extinction is measured by cavity ringdown spectroscopy and aerosol absorption by photoacoustic spectroscopy. Extinction is measured with sufficient precision and accuracy for the remote atmosphere. The absorption measurements are valid only in strongly absorbing cases, such as in dilute plumes from wildfire smoke. The absorption and extinction of visible light by aerosol particles is a major component of the earth's radiation budget, strongly affecting climate. Highly absorbing particles directly heat the atmosphere, while particles that scatter light tend to cool the atmosphere. Extinction is the sum of absorption and scattering; in most cases scattering represents >90% of extinction, with absorption making up the remainder. These aerosol-radiation interactions also alter air temperature and the rates of photochemical reactions.
