"Non facciamo la guerra, combattiamo i rifiuti!"_FishArt.Participatory Art for environmental sustainability and aesthetic transformation of Anzio Fishermen's Harbour

FishArt is a 10-month international project funded by the New European Bahahus Cross-KIC Connect 2024 written by and granted to Chiara Certoma’ (UniTo – now at UniRm1) and led by Laura Corazza (UniTo), in collaboration with Raw-News, Platoon and the fishermen cooperatives of Anzio (Rome, Italy). FishArt promotes a radically participatory art and education process supporting the requalification of the Fishermen’s Harbour in the coastal city of Anzio, Italy. As part of the FishArt project agenda, transect walks and educational training initiatives have been combined in a major event, strongly requested by the local community. The synergy between local institutions and international research aims to stimulate civic participation on the problem of marine pollution and the care of the coastal territory. The event “Let’s not make war, let’s fight waste!” is a civic initiative promoted by the Extraordinary Commission supported by the Environment Area of the Municipality of Anzio which aims to involve all the components of civil society for a collaborative cleaning of the beaches, transforming the celebrations of the Anzio/Nettuno landing into a moment of sharing and to raise awareness against marine pollution.

Online Supplement for An Arabic Version of The Visual Aesthetics of Websites Inventory (AR-VisAWI): Translation and Psychometric Properties

This is the online supplement for a translation of the Visual Aesthetics of Websites Inventory into Arabic (AR-VisAWI).

In the field of human-computer interaction, the concept of visual aesthetics gained popularity after researchers started to recognize its merits and effects on user experience. Yet, no proper instrument exists to assess the visual aesthetics of websites that are intended for users who speak Arabic as their native language. As such, the aim of this study was to develop and evaluate an Arabic version of the Visual Aesthetics of Websites Inventory (VisAWI, Moshagen & Thielsch, 2010) and its short version (VisAWI-S, Moshagen & Thielsch, 2013). For this purpose, participants were asked to evaluate a randomly assigned website with the AR-VisAWI and with different validating instruments. A final sample of 223 participants was included in the analyses.

This online supplement includes

a codebook describing all instructions and items

raw data (anonymised) and analysis script (Note: The raw data contains only the information of persons who have agreed to be included in the analysis. Some demographic information was deleted to ensure anonymity.)

Questionnaire template and scoring instructions

Dataset for: Influence of colour vision on attention to, and impression of, complex aesthetic images

Humans exhibit colour vision variations due to genetic polymorphisms, with trichromacy being the most common, while some people are classified as dichromats. Whether genetic differences in colour vision affect the way of viewing complex images remains unknown. Here, we investigated how people with different colour vision focused their gaze on aesthetic paintings by eye-tracking while freely viewing digital rendering of paintings and assessed individual impressions through a decomposition analysis of adjective ratings for the images. Gaze concentrated areas among trichromats were more highly correlated than those among dichromats. However, compared to the brief dichromatic experience with the simulated images, there was little effect of innate colour vision differences on impressions. These results indicate that chromatic information is instructive as a cue for guiding attention, whereas the impression of each person is generated according to their own sensory experience and normalised through one's own colour space.

Quantitative dissection of color patterning in the foliar ornamental Coleus reveals underlying features driving aesthetic value

readMe.txt (this file) /Coleus_scans.zip: This directory contains 3 sub-directories:

1. raw_scans: Raw scans of coleus leaves. Data collection described below.

2. binary_leaves: A zip file of individual binary leaves isolated from the raw scans. Data processing described below.

3. colored_leaves: A zip file of individual colored leaves isolated from the raw scans using the binary leaf silhouettes. Data processing described below.

Data collection

Coleus leaf scans were collected from a starting population of 50,000 seedlings that were originally harvested from 133 open-pollinated mother plants in early January in Gainesville, FL. We organized the seedlings into families based on their maternal parents, grew the plants for five weeks and then selected ~2,000 individuals as potential new cultivars based on their foliar color patterning and branching architecture in mid-February. This data represents the youngest fully expanded leaf from each plant between 5-6 weeks of age. Leaves were imaged on Epson Perfection V550 Scanners with Kodak KOCSGS color separation guides included for color calibration. Analysis App Color analysis can be performed using an open-access software program called ColourQuant (Li et al., 2019); available on github: github.com/maoli0923/ColourQuant).

Explanation of isolated binary and colored leaf files

To isolate individual leaves from the raw data scans - we adjusted the RGB color balance on each scan by a white balance method so that the white swatch in the Kodak KOCSGS color separation guide is pure white, to ensure that scanners were not biasing the color data. Next, we segmented the leaves from the background by converting the RGB matrix into hue-saturation-value (HSV) format. Since most background pixels become grey in HSV, this was used to set a threshold that separates grey values from true leaf values. We then used the binary leaf silhouettes to extract the individual colored leaves by setting the background to pure white, and the foreground to pure black. We manually adjusted the thresholding for leaves that could not be automatically extracted due to shadows in the scan. The binary and colored leaf folder contain outliers, including leaves that were overlapping on the scanner, very small, or broken. These can be manually removed before analysis.

File ID Key

Files are named with the following code: Year_Family_Scan#. Files containing selected leaves for cultivar development are prepended with an “S” and files containing maternal leaf scans are prepended with an “M.”

For questions regarding released dataset contact: Margaret Frank mhf47@cornell.edu

Li, M., Frank, M.H., and Migicovsky, Z.. 2019a.
