AIRBORNE SPECTROMETER MEASUREMENTS FMOM BOREAL SNOW-COVERED LANDSCAPE

<p>The dataset contains 10 meter resolution reflectance data from boreal snow-covered landscape. The purpose of the airborne measurements was to investigate the effect of forest canopy on optical remote sensing signals for snow-covered surfaces. The hyperspectral airborne data was acquired with an AisaDUAL imaging spectrometer on March 18 and on March 21, 2010 in Sodankyl&auml;, Finland. The image swath was 240 meters and flight lines were several kilometers long. The original spatial resolution of the data is 80 cm x 80 cm, but it was resampled to pixel size of 10 m x 10 m. All measurements were carried out in non-cloudy conditions (0/8 to 2/8 cloud cover). On 18 March, the tree canopy was snow-free and snow on the ground was several days old, while on 21 March, the tree canopy was snow-covered and snow on ground was fresh. The data contains mosaics of the flight lines for the bands 555 nm, 645 nm, 858.5 nm and 1640 nm for both days 18 March 2010 and 21 March 2010.</p>

AIRBORNE SPECTROMETER MEASUREMENTS FROM BOREAL AND TUNDRA SITE DURING SPRING SNOW MELT

<p>The dataset contains 10 meter resolution reflectance data from boreal and tundra sites during spring snow melt. The purpose of the airborne measurements was to investigate the effect of forest canopy and snow melting on optical remote sensing signals at the very end of melting period. The hyperspectral airborne data was acquired with an AisaDUAL imaging spectrometer on 5 May 2011 in Sodankyl&auml; and in Saariselk&auml;, Finland. Saariselk&auml; is a fell region and partly represents open tundra. The image swath was 240 meters and flight lines were several kilometers long. The original spatial resolution of the data is 80 cm x 80 cm, but it was resampled to pixel size of 10 m x 10 m. Snow depth was between 0 cm and 30 cm at the Sodankyl&auml; site and between 0 cm and 60 cm at the Saariselk&auml; site implying that the spring melt was clearly more advanced in Sodankyl&auml;. Additionally, more snow-free pixels were found at Sodankyl&auml; than Saariselk&auml;. During the measurements the sky was cloudless in Sodankyl&auml; (cloud cover 0/8) and cloudy (cloud cover 7/8) in Saariselk&auml;. The data contains mosaics of the flight lines for the bands 555 nm, 645 nm, 858.5 nm and 1640 nm for both study sites.</p>

<p>A unique set of data is presented, derived from measurements conducted at the rural central European observatory at Melpitz, Germany. Data derived from remote sensing (lidar), airborne platforms (helicopter, balloon), and ground-based in-situ methods is included. Measured and Mie-modeled optical aerosol parameters are presented in the dry- and ambient state. Modeled optical parameters are based on Mie-theory. For ambient state hygroscopic growth simulations are utilized.</p>

A Comparison of Passive and Active Dust Sampling Methods for Measuring Airborne MRSA in Pig Farms

Smit</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Methicillin resistant strains of <em>Staphylococcus aureus </em>(MRSA) are resistant to most b-lactam antibiotics. Pigs are an important reservoir of livestock associated MRSA (LA-MRSA), which is genetically distinct from both hospital and community acquired MRSA. Occupational exposure to pigs on farms can lead to LA-MRSA carriage by workers. There is a growing body of research on MRSA found in the farm environment, the airborne route of transmission, and its implication on human health. This study aims to compare two sampling methods used to measure airborne MRSA in the farm environment; passive dust sampling with electrostatic dust fall collectors (EDCs), and active inhalable dust sampling using stationary air pumps with Teflon filters.</p> <p>Paired dust samples using &nbsp;EDCs and GSP samplers, totaling 87 samples, were taken from seven Dutch pig farms, in multiple compartments housing pigs of varying ages. Total nucleic acids of both types of dust samples were extracted and targets indicating MRSA (<em>femA, nuc, mecA</em>) and total bacterial count (16S rRNA) were quantified using quantitative Real Time PCRs.</p> <p>MRSA could be measured in all stationary pump samples and in 94% of the EDCs, additionally MRSA was present on every farm sampled. There was a strong positive relationship between the paired MRSA levels found in EDCs and those measured on filters (Normalized by 16S rRNA; Pearson&rsquo;s correlation coefficient r=0.94, Not Normalized; Pearson&rsquo;s correlation coefficient r=0.84).</p> <p>This study suggests that EDCs can be used as an affordable and easily standardized method for quantifying airborne MRSA levels in the pig farm setting.</p>

The measurements&nbsp;were done in&nbsp;May&ndash;June 2015, August 2015 and April&ndash;May 2017.&nbsp;The flights took off from Tampere-Pirkkala airport (IATA: TMP, ICAO: EFTP) and the&nbsp;measurement profiles&nbsp;profiles were flown&nbsp;over&nbsp;Hyyti&auml;l&auml; (61.85N, 24.28E) in southern Finland.</p>

ATom: L2 In Situ Measurements from the NCAR Airborne Oxygen Instrument (AO2), V2

This dataset provides in situ atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations measured by the NCAR Airborne Oxygen Instrument (AO2) during airborne campaigns conducted by NASA's Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission. The AO2 Instrument measures O2 concentration using a vacuum-ultraviolet absorption technique. ATom deploys an extensive gas and aerosol payload on the NASA DC-8 aircraft for a systematic, global-scale sampling of the atmosphere, profiling continuously from 0.2 to 12 km altitude. Flights occurred in each of 4 seasons from 2016 to 2018. Flights originate from the Armstrong Flight Research Center in Palmdale, California, fly north to the western Arctic, south to the South Pacific, east to the Atlantic, north to Greenland, and return to California across central North America. ATom establishes a single, contiguous, global-scale dataset. This comprehensive dataset will be used to improve the representation of chemically reactive gases and short-lived climate forcers in global models of atmospheric chemistry and climate.

ACT-America: L1 DAOD Measurements by Airborne CO2 Lidar, Eastern USA

This dataset provides Level 1 (L1) remotely sensed differential absorption optical depth (DAOD) measurements made through the Multi-Functional Fiber Laser Lidar (MFLL; Harris Corporation) during airborne campaigns in Summer 2016, Winter 2017, Fall 2017, and Spring 2018 conducted over central and eastern regions of the United States for the Atmospheric Carbon and Transport (ACT-America) project. DAOD were measured at 0.1 second frequency during flights of the C-130 Hercules aircraft at altitudes up to 8 km with MFLL. The MFLL is a set of Continuous-Wave (CW) lidar instruments consisting of an intensity modulated multi-frequency single-beam synchronous-detection Laser Absorption Spectrometer (LAS) operating at 1571 nm for measuring the column amount of CO2 number density and range between the aircraft and the surface or to cloud tops, and surface reflectance and a Pseudo-random Noise (PN) altimeter at 1596 nm for measuring the path length from the aircraft to the scattering surface and/or cloud tops. The MFLL was onboard all ACT-America seasonal campaigns, except Summer 2019. Complete aircraft flight information, interpolated to the 0.1 second column CO2 reporting frequency, are included, but not limited to, latitude, longitude, altitude, and attitude. Data users should note that a Level 2 (L2) MFLL data product is available (related dataset) that contains all data variables (plus the column-average CO2) included in this L1 MFLL data product but has undergone additional processing and calibrations and is recommended for most use cases.

BOREAS RSS-12 Airborne Tracking Sunphotometer Measurements (C-130)

The BOREAS RSS-12 team collected both ground and airborne sunphotometer measurements for use in characterizing the aerosol optical properties of the atmosphere during the BOREAS data collection activities. These measurements are to be used to: 1) measure the magnitude and variability of the aerosol optical depth in both time and space; 2) determine the optical properties of the boreal aerosols; and 3) atmospherically correct remotely sensed data acquired during BOREAS. This data set contains airborne tracking sunphotometer data that were acquired from the C-130 aircraft during its flights over the BOREAS study areas. The data cover selected days and times from May to September 1994.

CARAFE: Regional Airborne Greenhouse Gases Eddy Covariance Measurements, 2016-2017

This dataset provides airborne eddy covariance (EC) fluxes of carbon dioxide, methane, sensible heat, and latent heat at high spatial resolution collected during the NASA Carbon Airborne Flux Experiment (CARAFE) airborne 2016 and 2017 campaigns. CARAFE utilized the NASA C-23 Sherpa aircraft with a suite of commercial and custom instrumentation. Deployment occurred across the Mid-Atlantic Region for the period 2016-09-07 through 2016-09-26 and 2017-05-03 through 2017-05-26. The data also include downwelling radiation, water vapor, pressure, temperature, wind, and aircraft navigation data. Airborne EC can quantify surface fluxes at local to regional scales, potentially helping to bridge gaps between top-down and bottom-up flux estimates and offering novel insights into biophysical and biogeochemical processes.

ATom: In-Situ Measurements of Airflow and Aerosols from Multiple Airborne Campaigns

This dataset provides results of selected in-situ measurements of airflow and aerosol particles collected during the following airborne campaigns: NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom), Saharan Aerosol Long-range Transport and Aerosol-Cloud-interaction Experiment (SALTRACE), and Absorbing aerosol layers in a changing climate: aging, lifetime and dynamics (A-LIFE). The airborne campaigns were conducted between 2013-06-10 and 2018-05-21. Depending upon the aircraft instrumentation per flight and campaign, the data include aircraft position, relative humidity, temperature, pressure, angle of attack (AOA), the probe location, true and probe air speeds, and aerosol particle diameters as extracted from Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP) images for the ATom and A-LIFE flights. Also provided are the results of combining the airborne data with numerical modeling to simulate particle sampling efficiency. Simulations investigated how airflow around wing-mounted instruments affected sampling efficiency and the induced errors for different realistic flight conditions.

ATom: Measurements from Airborne Tropospheric Hydrogen Oxides Sensor (ATHOS), V2

This dataset provides the mixing ratios of hydrogen oxides measured by the Airborne Tropospheric Hydrogen Oxides Sensor (ATHOS) during the ATom 1-4 campaigns. ATHOS uses laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) to measure hydroxide (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO2) simultaneously. The measurements include OH and HO2 mixing ratios and the OH interference determined by chemical removal of OH. The reactivity of OH is measured by the OH Reactivity (OHR) instrument using the discharge flow method and is integrated into the ATHOS electronics. These data provide insights into the oxidative state of the global atmosphere. These data are useful for testing the oxidation chemistry in models and other analytical methods being developed to deduce the atmosphere's oxidative state.

ATom: L2 Measurements of In Situ Airborne Formaldehyde (ISAF)

This dataset provides the atmospheric volume mixing ratio of formaldehyde measured during airborne campaigns conducted by NASA's Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission. ATom deploys an extensive gas and aerosol payload on the NASA DC-8 aircraft for systematic, global-scale sampling of the atmosphere, profiling continuously from 0.2 to 12 km altitude. Flights occurred in each of 4 seasons from 2016 to 2018. The NASA In Situ Airborne Formaldehyde (ISAF) instrument, based at the Goddard Space Flight Center, measures formaldehyde on high-altitude NASA aircraft. The instrument uses laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) to obtain the high detection sensitivity needed to detect formaldehyde in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere where abundances are 10 parts per trillion. LIF also enables a fast time response needed to measure the abundance of formaldehyde in the finely structured outflow of convective storms. These measurements of formaldehyde will be used elucidate mechanisms of convective transport and quantify the effects of boundary layer pollutants on the ozone photochemistry and cloud microphysics of the upper atmosphere.
