DFT investigation on the application of pure and doped X12N12 (X = B and Al) fullerene-like nano-cages towards the adsorption of temozolomide
<p>The sensitivity of pure and doped X12 N12 (X = B and Al) fullerene-like nano-cages (FLNs) toward the anticancer drug temozolomide (TMZ) is probed herein at DFT/M06-2X-D3/6-311G(d,p) theoretical level in both gas phase and water. A noticeable affinity of the FLNs toward TMZ was observed along with the negative gas-phase adsorption energies -1.37 and -2.09 eV for the most stable configurations of pure B12N12 and Al12N12 pristines, respectively. Considerable charge transfer from TMZ to the FLNs was also revealed via NBO analysis and the Hirshfeld atomic charges, making the dipole moment vector of the molecular complexes to be oriented from the nano-cages to the TMZ moiety. Furthermore, a percentage decrease in the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (ΔEg) of 38.09 and 17.72 % was obtained for the B12N12 and Al12N12 nano-cages, respectively. The percentage change in ΔEg was found to be reduced upon doping and solvation of the FLNs. Finally, a recovery time in vacuum ultraviolet light of 1.06 s is found for the complex with pure B12N12, which in addition to the above-mentioned parameters make this boron nitride cage the best sensor for TMZ, among the FLNs considered in the present work.</p>

Data from: The thermoelectric properties of Au nanoparticle-incorporated Al-doped mesoporous ZnO thin films
Mesoporous Al-doped ZnO thin films incorporated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were synthesized using a sol-gel and evaporation-induced self-assembly process. In this work, the complementary effects of Au NP incorporation and Al doping on the mesoporous ZnO thin films' thermoelectric properties were analyzed. The incorporated Au NPs induced an increase in electrical conductivity but a detriment in the pore arrangement of the mesoporous ZnO thin film, which was accompanied by a decrease in porosity. However, the addition of the Al dopant minimized the pore structural collapse because of the inhibition of the grain growth in the ZnO skeletal structure, resulting in an enhancement of the pore arrangement and porosity. When the Au NPs and Al dopant were added at the same time, the degradation in the pore structure was minimized and the electrical conductivity was effectively increased but the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient was decreased. However, as a result, the thermoelectric power factor was increased by 2.4 times compared to the pristine mesoporous ZnO thin film. It was found that co-introducing the Au NPs and Al doping to the mesoporous ZnO structure was effective in preserving the pore structure and increasing the electric conductivity, thereby enhancing the thermoelectric property of the mesoporous ZnO thin film.

Spectral and thermometric properties altering through crystal field strength modification and host material composition in luminescent thermometers based on Fe3+ doped AB2O4 type nanocrystals (A= Mg, Ca; B=Al, Ga)
<p>The growing interest in the use of luminescence thermometry for noncontact temperature reading in very specific conditions imposes the need to develop an approach allowing modification of the luminescence parameters of the thermometer accordingly to the requirements. Therefore, in response to these expectations, this manuscript reports an approach to modulating the spectral position and the luminescence thermal quenching rate of Fe3+ ions by modifying the crystal field strength and the host material composition of nanocrystalline AB2O4 type nanocrystals (A= Mg, Ca; B=Al, Ga). It was proved that in a group of MgAl2O4, MgGa2O4, CaAl2O4, and CaGa2O4 nanocrystals doped with Fe3+ ions the emission spectral range, as well as the relative thermal sensitivity (from 0.2%/oC for MAO to 2.07%/oC for CGO) and the operating temperature range, can be easily modified by the host material composition. For instance, a maximal relative thermal sensitivity of 2.58%/oC is obtained for Fe3+, Tb3+ co-doped CaAl2O4 nanocrystals. The proposed approach is a step toward the intentional designing of the highly sensitive luminescent thermometer.</p>
