Analogue models testing the interaction between a propagating continental rift and inherited crustal fabrics

This dataset presents the results of an experimental series of analogue models performed to investigate the interaction between a propagating continental rift and inherited crustal fabrics. Our experimental series was designed adopting a parametric approach, which consisted in the systematic variation of the orientation of various kinds of brittle discontinuities (e.g., faults, fractures, foliations, etc.). Structures of models have been analysed quantitatively by means of photogrammetric digital elevation model reconstruction and semi-automatic fault pattern quantification. In this dataset, we show the row data and specific elaborations supporting the interpretation of results.

Data set to ''Volcano growth versus deformation by strike-slip faults: morphometric characterization through analogue modelling'

This data set is the supplementary material to Grosse et al. (2020) 'Volcano growth versus deformation by strike-slip faults: morphometric characterization through analogue modelling', published in Tectonophysics (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tecto.2020.228411). The data set consists of (1) 249 digital elevation models (DEMs) of each step of the the analogue experiments carried out, in standard ENVI format, zipped; and (2) an Excel file containing the DEM-derived morphometric parameters for each of the analogue models.

Experiments were carried out at the analogue modelling lab of the Department of Geography at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). A granular mixture of fine-grained quartz sand and kaolin clay was used as analogue material. Experiments were conducted on a fixed table, on which a basal layer of granular material was placed. A basal plate attached to a step-motor was used to simulate pure strike-slip displacements of the basal layer. Volcano growth was simulated by depositing loads of granular material on top of the basal layer from a point source. The analogue models were photographed at regular time intervals during the experiments using four digital cameras. The photographs were used to generate synthetic digital elevation models (DEMs) with 0.2 mm spatial resolution of each step of the analogue models by applying the MICMAC digital stereo-photogrammetry software. The ENVI software was used to re-sample the DEMs to a 0.5 mm spatial resolution and apply the noise-reduction Lee filter. Morphometric data were then extracted from the DEMs by applying two IDL-language algorithms: NETVOLC, used to automatically calculate the volcano edifice basal outline, and MORVOLC, used to extract a set of morphometric parameters.

Analogue models of caldera resurgence: database of models and elaborations

This dataset presents the results of an experimental series of analogue models performed to investigate caldera resurgence processes, particularly the setting of the Los Potreros caldera that belongs to the Los Humeros Volcanic Complex (Puebla State, Mexico). Our experimental series was designed adopting a parametric approach, which consisted in the systematic variation of controlling parameters, such as: depth of intrusion, overburden thickness above the analogue magma chamber, presence of inherited discontinuities. Structures of models have been analysed quantitatively by means of (i) photogrammetric Digital Elevation Model reconstruction, (ii) semi-automatic fault pattern quantification and (iii) Digital Particle Image Velocimetry techniques. In this dataset, we show the row data and specific elaborations supporting the interpretation of modelling results.

Analogue Models for comparing and testing the relationship between inverted normal faults and pure thrusting during the positive tectonic inversion

This dataset contains a series of Analogue Models for comparing and testing positive tectonic inversion mechanisms and their newly formed structures . Furthermore, it includes 2-D seismic reflection profiles that can be compared with the models presented here. Finally, examples of natural cases that show tectonic inversion processes are included. Both, seismic lines and photos are located on a segment of Andean forearc, specifically, in the Domeyko Cordillera and the Preandean Basins, northern Chile.

Strain partitioning and localization due to heterogeneities in the fold - and - thrust belt 2 detachment: Analogue models of progressive arcs

Although most arcuate orogens are deformed as progressive arcs–curvature is acquired during12shortening-, they have been scarcely simulated by analogue modelling. Our team work designed13a backstop that deformed in map view building up fold-and-thrust belts (FTBs) that acquire14progressively its curved shape (Jiménez-Bonilla et al., 2020); silicone and sand layers15reproduced the brittle-ductile conditions expected to be common in external tectonic wedges.16However, natural cases usually includeheterogeneities in the detachment such as diapirs,17thickness variations of the viscous layer or pinch outs. Based on the same progressive arc model18setup, we present here seven new experiments including these three types of heterogeneities.19Our results show that strain was partitioned between shortening structures whose transport20directions draw a radial pattern and normal faults and oblique strike-slip faults that21accommodate arc-lengthening. Moreover, any heterogeneity conditions the wedge evolution and22the nucleation of structures. Both diapirs and the presence of a silicone pinch-out perpendicular23to the apex movement favour that frontal deformation slows down and the wedge thickens up to24reach the supercritical angle. Interestingly, the presence of diapirs or silicone thickness25variations favour the arc-parallel stretching localization close to these heterogeneities. In26addition, silicone bands parallel to the apex movement generate different structural styles along27the FTB. More frictional detachments favour thicker wedges and less frontal propagation.28Transfer zones accommodate the differential displacement between FTB segments. These29results may be useful to investigate geometric and kinematic changes along natural progressive30arcs such as the Gibraltar, Sulaiman and Zagros cases

Spaceflight Analogue Culture Enhances the Host-Pathogen Interaction Between Salmonella and a 3-D Biomimetic Intestinal Co-Culture Model
Physical forces associated with spaceflight and spaceflight analogue culture regulate a wide range of physiological responses by both bacterial and mammalian cells that can impact infection. However, our mechanistic understanding of how these environments regulate host-pathogen interactions in humans is poorly understood. Using a spaceflight analogue low fluid shear culture system, we investigated the effect of Low Shear Modeled Microgravity (LSMMG) culture on the colonization of Salmonella Typhimurium in a 3-D biomimetic model of human colonic epithelium containing macrophages. RNA-seq profiling of stationary phase wild type and delta hfq mutant bacteria alone indicated that LSMMG culture induced global changes in gene expression in both strains and that the RNA-binding protein Hfq played a significant role in regulating the transcriptional response of the pathogen to LSMMG culture. However, a core set of genes important for adhesion, invasion, and motility were commonly induced in both strains. LSMMG culture enhanced the colonization (adherence, invasion and intracellular survival) of Salmonella in this advanced model of intestinal epithelium using a mechanism that was independent of Hfq. Although S. Typhimurium delta hfq mutants are normally defective for invasion when grown as conventional shaking cultures, LSMMG conditions unexpectedly enabled high levels of colonization by an isogenic hfq mutant. In response to infection with either the wild type or mutant, host cells upregulated transcripts involved in inflammation, tissue remodeling, and wound healing during intracellular survival. Interestingly, infection by the hfq mutant led to fewer transcriptional differences between LSMMG- and control-infected host cells relative to infection with the wild type strain. This is the first study to investigate the effect of LSMMG culture on the interaction between S. Typhimurium and a 3-D model of human intestinal tissue. These findings advance our understanding of how physical forces can impact the early stages of human enteric salmonellosis.
