Sediment core dataset for "Shift away from Nile incision at Luxor ~4,000 years ago impacted ancient Egyptian landscapes"

<p>This dataset contains all sedimentary core information used for reconstructing the Holocene evolution of the Nile Valley landscape near Luxor in Egypt.</p> <p>Sedimentary information from 81 sediment cores retrieved by a combination of hand-operated Eijkelkamp augers and a gasoline-powered Cobra TT percussion corer was used to investigate the Nile&rsquo;s Holocene fluvial deposits in its valley near Luxor, Egypt. Sediment samples were studied in ~10 cm intervals and had their characteristics such as sedimentary texture (conforming to USDA standards), grain size, Munsell colour, degree of sorting, mica occurrence and rhizolith percentages logged on-site. Boreholes reached to an average depth of ~8 m &mdash; with many penetrating &gt;10 m. Their spacing varied from ~20 to 200 m, depending on the heterogeneity of the subsurface. The cross-section was strategically placed to span the entire valley, perpendicular to the main axis of the Nile Valley and the current river, while following governmental policies and regulatory procedures working in and around Egyptian Antiquities areas. Coring locations were recorded in UTM36N and the Survey of Egypt vertical datum using a Leica RTK-GNSS positioning system, and subsequently stored together with the sedimentary logs for future reference. Subsequently, UTM36N coordinates were converted to degrees, minutes, seconds for publication purposes.&nbsp;</p> <p>This dataset consists of one Microsoft Excel workbook:</p> <p>1_sedimentary_core_dataset.xlxs</p> <p>Further details can be found in Peeters et al. Avaris, Tell el-Daba, Ancient Egyptian Hyksos

Tell el-Daba is thought by archaeologists and Egyptologists such as Manfred Bietak to be the site of Avaris, the capital city of the so-called Hyksos of Ancient Egypt's 2nd Intermediate Period from around 1670–1550 BC. Once thought to be an invading military force that swept into Egypt and subjugated the land based on the account of Manetho—archaeological, cultural, and genetic studies now show they were a group of Semitic settlers that arrived from Canaan in the Levant and settled in the Nile Delta. With the aid of modern archaeology and academic work, new theories now hold the Hyksos of Egypt's 15th Dynasties grew plentiful in the Nile Delta, eventually becoming the dominant power in Lower Egypt after the waning of the 12th dynasty. For over a century, biblical historians and archaeologists like Sir Flinders Petrie have proposed the Hyksos to be the Hebrew people arriving in Egypt under the auspice of Joseph. Data from: Shifting milestones of natural sciences: the ancient Egyptian discovery of Algol's period confirmed

The Ancient Egyptians wrote Calendars of Lucky and Unlucky Days that assigned astronomically influenced prognoses for each day of the year. The best preserved of these calendars is the Cairo Calendar (hereafter CC) dated to 1244–1163 B.C. We have presented evidence that the 2.85 days period in the lucky prognoses of CC is equal to that of the eclipsing binary Algol during this historical era. We wanted to find out the vocabulary that represents Algol in the mythological texts of CC. Here we show that Algol was represented as Horus and thus signified both divinity and kingship. The texts describing the actions of Horus are consistent with the course of events witnessed by any naked eye observer of Algol. These descriptions support our claim that CC is the oldest preserved historical document of the discovery of a variable star. The period of the Moon, 29.6 days, has also been discovered in CC. We show that the actions of Seth were connected to this period, which also strongly regulated the times described as lucky for Heaven and for Earth. Now, for the first time, periodicity is discovered in the descriptions of the days in CC. Unlike many previous attempts to uncover the reasoning behind the myths of individual days, we discover the actual rules in the appearance and behaviour of deities during the whole year.
