Survey of Native American Archaeological Sites in Massachusetts 12000-300 BP
The interpretation that pre-contact Native American land-use played an increasing role in landscape dynamics through the Holocene is prevalent in historical, scientific and popular literature. This exerts a strong influence on modern conservation practices especially the use of prescribed fire (Cronon 1984, Abrams 2002, Pyne 1984, Mann 2002) and yet there has never been a robust analysis of relevant archaeological and paleoecological data on the subject. This data is used in the archaeological component of a larger National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded research project intended to analyze the triggers and drivers of ecosystem dynamics. More specifically, the research aims to determine the role of human activity (fire, land clearance, horticulture) in shaping vegetation dynamics. Some of the alternative hypotheses examined in the archaeological analysis include: (1) do we see progressively intensive cultural development and increasingly intensive land use throughout the pre-Contact period?; (2) do we see cultural continuity with fairly passive responses to environmental change and minimal ecological impact of people?; or (3) is cultural adaptation environmental and/or cultural specific, with clear influence of human agency? Our collaborative ecological and social research (Duranleau 2009, Foster and Aber 2004, Chilton et al. 2010) position us to undertake such a regional synthesis as one critical element of the proposed study on ecological dynamics and regime shifts. This synthesis will allow us to consider basic ecological questions concerning interactions among climate, disturbance and human activity in ecosystem dynamics; provide a landscape and regional test of a hypothesis put forth by Munoz et al. (2010) concerning the link between environmental change and cultural development in northeastern North America; and position our archaeological community to apply new ecological perspectives to their research. Coastal Native American Archaeological Sites in New York and Southern New England 12000-400 BP
Information on coastal Native American archaeological sites in New York and southern New England was compiled from various state historical commissions. The data include the following characteristics: Project Area, Project Size, and Cultural Remains, which identifies the presence of either pre-Contact (PRE) or historic (HI) material, or the lack of cultural material (NCM). Site type Site Type delineates the type of pre-Contact site represented by the artifacts and features identified at a location, which ranges from a Find Spot (FS) (a tool or piece of chipping debris found on the surface or found alone), and a Short-term Site (ST) (presence of artifacts indicating temporary use of a location), to a Seasonal Site (SE) (a site containing evidence of repeated occupation over long periods of time and with features and evidence for a broad range of activities), and a Sedentary Site (SD) (evidence of year-round habitation in form of botanical, faunal, fish and shellfish remains; presence of hearths, storage pits and middens; large variety and great quantity of tool types). Time periods Time Periods include: the Paleoindian Period (P) (12,000-10,000 BP); Early Archaic (EA) (10,000-8000 BP), Middle Archaic (MA) (8000-6000 BP), Late Archaic (LA) (6000-3000 BP), Transitional Archaic (TA) (3500-2500 BP), Early Woodland (EW) (3000-2000 BP), Middle Woodland (MW) (2000-1000 BP), Late Woodland (LW) (1000-500 BP), Contact period (C) (A.D. 1500-1620), and sites of unknown temporal affiliation (U). <p>The set contains a figure, with with photographs that show examples of finds discovered during excavations at archaeological site 3 in Kaliszany, Wągrowiec commune, Poland. It is a stone and earth structure in which a hoard of metal objects dating to the Late Bronze Age was discovered in 1943. The photo is from the 2022 survey, when the south-western part of the structure was explored. <br><br>The paper and data were prepared as part of a project funded by the National Science Centre, Poland: <em>A Biography of Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages Hoards. Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jasrep.2022.103374</p> <p>In 1626, a vessel making its way to Virginia was forced off course and damaged in a storm, which drove the ship onto the eastern shore of the Cape Cod peninsula, Massachusetts. Onboard were two English merchants and some servants and farmers, many of whom were Irish. In 1863, a storm exposed the weathered remains of a vessel at Old Ship Harbor. At the time, it was hailed as the same ship that had brought the Virginia-bound passengers to Plymouth in 1626. Recent wiggle-match C14 dating and dendrochronology suggests that this is indeed a ship from the early seventeenth century.</p>

<p>This is part of the data (photos) obtained during the survey at Tawi Said 2018. More data can be found in the other submissions of the Tawi Said Archaeological Survey community.</p> <p>The site of Tawi Said is located in the Al-Sharqiyah governorate, approximately 5 km northwest of the modern city of Bidiyah, on the edge of the Sharqiyah Desert. It was discovered in 1976 by Beatrice de Cardi. Two years later, she returned to conduct small scale excavations at the site. Subsequently, numerous references to the site were made in the literature as the only known settlement of the Wadi Suq period (2000-1600 BC) in Central Oman.</p> <p>In November 2018, a short survey was conducted by the Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany, in Tawi Said. An area of 150 x 120 m was intensively field-walked in 1.5 m wide transects to ensure complete visual coverage of the investigated area. Each find received an ascending number and its exact location was recorded using a portable GPS device. In total, nearly 7500 objects were documented that date back to the Wadi Suq, as well as the (late) Islamic period. Among the finds, the largest group of artefacts, by far, is of pottery sherds, followed by marine shells and snails, stone artefacts, metal objects, and jewellery. Furthermore, two stamp seals, one of them of a Wadi Suq period date, were found.</p>

Cross-sectional images from x-ray computed tomography (XCT) of conserved archaeological samples
<p>The repository contains cross-sections of 83 wood samples derived from X-ray computed tomography (CT) data. The samples are a part of the LEIZA reference collection, which were created within the framework of the project "Mass Finds in Archaeological Collections", which was funded by the "Kulturstiftung des Bundes" and the "Kulturstiftung der Länder" from 15.04.2008 to 31.12.2011 as part of the "Program for the Conservation and Restoration of Mobile Cultural Property" (KUR, see www.rgzm.de/kur).</p> <p>Around 10 years later, during the CuTAWAY project (ConservaTion And Wod AnalYses), the wood samples were digitized using an in-house laboratory X-ray CT system (Diondo d2, Germany) at HSLU with a nominal voxel size between 27 and 44 μm in order to analyse the structure of the interior. You can download the cross-sectional images of the data here. The 3D data acquisition was carried out during November 2019 - April 2021.</p> <p>The CuTAWAY project was funded by the German Research Association (DFG) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) from 2019 to 2023 (CuTAWAY - Conservation and Wood Analyses, DFG - 416877131 and SNSF - 200021E_183684).</p>

Archaeological shovel test data for Little Sapelo Island, Mary Hammock, Patterson Island, and Pumpkin Hammock; Spring 2007, Summer 2007 and 2008
The purpose of this study was to determine the human occupational history of Little Sapelo Island, Mary Hammock, Patterson Island, and Pumpkin Hammock in McIntosh County, GA. During the Spring of 2007 and Summers of 2007 and 2008, a systematic archaeological shovel test survey was performed at a closely-spaced interval of 20 meters. The shovel test grid was laid out using a Trimble GPS, in accordance with the Universal Trans Mercator coordinate system Zone 17, and the North American Datum of 1927 (with a typical accuracy between 1 and 6 m). Teams of two people would go to these locations, dig holes (typically 50 cm in diameter and 1 m deep), and put the soil through wire hardware cloth with a mesh size of 0.6 cm (i.e., 0.25 inch). All cultural material (except shell) were collected and put in labeled plastic bags. Only some shell samples were kept for future analysis. Ceramics were classified to determine surface treatment/ decoration, temper, and rim form, with the ultimate goal of determining their period of use. All of the data related to these shovel tests were entered into a spreadsheet, and that spreadsheet was turned into an ArcGIS point shapefile for analysis. A Comprehensive Radiocarbon Date Database from Archaeological Contexts on the Coastal Plain of Georgia
This database consists of radiocarbon dates from archaeological contexts on the coastal plain of Georgia (samples from strictly geological contexts were not included). A comprehensive search was performed to find the original sources of dates reported for all archaeological sites in this area. As such, dates reported from any time (i.e., 1960s to the present) were incorporated, which includes dates with problems. Data were compiled by John Turck and numerous undergraduate work study and volunteer students over a large period of time (from January 2012 to July 2012, and from January 2013 to April 2013). John Turck added to and refined the dataset between May 2013 and February 2014. In general, the database was structured so the information could be easily input into CALIB's online calibration program. It includes information such as: sample IDs, raw age and standard deviation, delta 13 correction factor, adjusted age and standard deviation, site number and name, material, association, and references. Calibrated dates were not entered into this databse. These data can be used to aid in archaeological studies, refining our understanding of the timing of human occupations throughout the coastal plain, and especially in the coastal zone. These data can also be used to aid geological, and geomorphological studies. The nature of the data is such that it will need to be continually added to as new samples are processesd, and further refined as more information about dates entered previosuly are obtained. Note: The original radiocarbon date database contains sensitive information (i.e., the specific location of archaeological sites) that is for professional archaeologists only. If a professional archaeologist needs site location information, they can contact the Georgia Archaeological Site File.
