Ecological Momentary Assessment of Family Forest Owners in New England 2016
Family forest owners (FFOs) across the U.S., and particularly in New England, are critically important to the health and future of the nation’s forests. It is important to understand the behavior of FFOs because they in the United States collectively own more forested land than the federal government or any other type of owner, and their actions and decisions will impact the public goods these forests provide. Typical studies of FFO behavior use self-reported survey data; participants are asked to recall past behavior or predict future behavior. These surveys are prone to bias, as it can be difficult to remember when things occur or to accurately predict what one will do in the future. Ecological momentary assessments, used commonly in medicine, are a fresh approach to measuring behavior by querying the subject in real-time. The PING project was designed to reduce this bias and provide a more accurate snapshot of how landowners engage with their land on a short-term basis. Participants in two experimental groups were invited to take part in a month-long survey, where the same questions were sent to them in the method of their choosing (text, via social media, or e-mail) once per week, asking about woodland engagement that week. Participants also took a pre- and post-survey to capture both demographics and feedback on the method. Over 61% of participants completed all 4 surveys and there was no statistically significant difference between the day a participant received their survey. Demographics were consistent with national statistics on woodland owners. A plurality of woodland owners in the study harvested timber for personal use and collected non-timber forest products. Finally, 86% of participants found the method of contact and number of questions reasonable, while 77% found the weekly contact reasonable. Assessing Plant Phenological Character Displacement Across the Eastern United States Since 1895
Reproductive character displacement has long been hypothesized to be a key determinant of speciation and co-existence in flowering plants. A central tenet of this hypothesis is that reproductive traits of close relatives growing in sympatry diverge more than they do where close relatives do not grow together. However, this idea remains untested across taxa and at large spatial scales. Here, we use data collected from tens of thousands of herbarium specimens to examine evidence for character displacement in flowering time for 91 closely-related pairs of animal-pollinated angiosperm species in the eastern USA. We see no evidence for overall phenological divergence in sympatry across regions, clades, or life histories. Rather our results indicate widespread convergence of flowering times in sympatry for species pairs that generally tend to flower close in time. We also find that climate change could alter the nature of these convergent flowering events by shifting them further apart in a majority species pair comparisons. Specifically, congeneric species in New England and the Atlantic Coastal Plain are projected to flower 2–4 days further apart, on average, by the mid-21st century as warming temperatures drive species-specific phenological shifts within genera. This may have significant consequences for species interactions and gene flow, especially if current sympatric convergence in flowering times has resulted from facilitative interactions between species.
Assessing Plant Phenological Patterns in the Eastern United States Over the Last 120 Years
Phenology is a key biological trait of an organism’s success and is one of the best indicators of its response to recent climate change. Plants are among the most well-studied organisms in this regard, but observational data bearing on this topic are largely restricted to woody species of the northern hemisphere, mostly from ca. the last three decades. Recent research has demonstrated that mobilized online herbarium specimens provide important, albeit mostly neglected, information on plant phenology. Here, we use the web tool CrowdCurio to crowdsource phenological data from more than 10,000 herbarium specimens representing 30 flowering plant species broadly distributed across the eastern United States. Our results, spanning 120 years and generated from over 2,000 crowdsourcers, clarify numerous aspects of plant phenology. First, they reveal that plant reproductive phenology is significantly advancing in response to warming, which is consistent with previous studies. Second, among those species with broad latitudinal ranges, populations from more southern latitudes are significantly more phenologically sensitive to temperature than those from northern populations. Last, contrary to some recent findings, plants in warmer, less variable climates may be much more dynamic, on average, in their phenological sensitivity. Our results are robust to a variety of confounding factors and span large phylogenetic distances and myriad life histories. These may represent more global trends in the latitudinal gradient of phenological response with myriad potential ecological and evolutionary consequences, and leads us to hypothesize that phenological sensitivity across species' ranges is driven by adaptation to local climates.

<p>The dataset beam-signal contains the spectrum vibration signals in the frequency domain measured from a beam reinforced with masses under healthy and faulty conditions. This data is for a commonly used system in various industrial applications. The data can be used for online condition process monitoring to detect and diagnose any anomaly or faulty condition in the system. Hence, the datasets provide the geometric and experimental measurements performed on the beam reinforced with masses for various mass losses considered structural damage. PsPM-FER02: PSR, SCR, ECG and respiration measurements from a 3 conditions x 3 experimental sessions repeated-measures design to assess the return of fear
<p>This dataset includes pupil size response (PSR), skin conductance response (SCR), electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiration measurements. Also included are CS and US information, keypress responses, keypress response times, key correctness and shock expectancy ratings at the end of the experiment for 74 healthy unmedicated participants (33 males and 41 females aged 24.2+/-3.9 years) participating in a 3 conditions x 3 experimental sessions repeated-measures design to assess the return of fear. CS were colored triangles (yellow/red/blue). US consisted of a 500 ms train of 250 square pulses with individual pulse width of 0.2 ms. SOA between the CS onset and US was 3.5 s. CS and US co-terminated. The ITI was randomly determined as discrete values between 7-11 seconds (mean 9 seconds).</p>
Dataset for algorithmic thinking skills assessment: Results from the virtual CAT large-scale study in Swiss compulsory education
<p><strong>Overview</strong><br>This dataset was collected during a main study that evaluated the virtual Cross Array Task (CAT) platform as an assessment tool for algorithmic thinking (AT) skills among K-12 students in Swiss compulsory education.<br>As algorithmic thinking becomes increasingly vital in our digital age, this study bridges the gap between traditional assessments and the needs of today's learners by introducing a digital platform. The virtual CAT, a digital adaptation of an unplugged assessment activity, offers scalable, automated assessments with reduced human intervention.</p> <p><strong>Study Context, Location and Participants</strong><br>To comprehensively investigate algorithmic competencies within compulsory education, exploring their variations and determining the factors influencing them, in Spring 2023 we conducted an experimental study with the virtual CAT's.<br>The sample comprises 129 students (65 girls and 64 boys), selected from nine classes across five public schools in Ticino and Solothurn cantons.</p> <p><strong>Data Collection</strong><br>During the data collection process, session and participant details were manually recorded by the administrator. <br>Each session has been assigned a unique identifier, and specific details, such as the date, canton, school name and type, and the students’ HarmoS grade (HG) level, have been recorded. <br>Student information are limited to sex and date of birth, with birth dates used to calculate ages, a significant factor in our demographic analysis. <br>To protect student privacy, unique identifiers have been assigned to each participant, keeping the data anonymous and secure. <br>The assessment tool automatically tracked all user interaction within the platform.<br>All data collected have been pseudonymised, aligning with prevailing open science practices in Switzerland (SNSF, 2021). <br>Data collection was integrated into a validation module of the app. </p> <p><strong>Data Features</strong><br>The dataset comprises the following files:</p> <ul> <li>STUDENTS_SESSIONS.csv</li> <li>RESULTS.csv</li> <li>LOGS.csv</li> <li>CANTONS.csv</li> <li>ALGORITHMS.csv</li> </ul> <p>These files collectively provide insights into the algorithmic actions of the students, demographic details, session logs, results, and more.</p> <p><strong>Usage & Ethics</strong><br>In the spirit of open science, this dataset is made available to the public after meticulous anonymisation to ensure all participants' privacy and ethical treatment. <br>Initial authorisations were secured from school administrators, teachers, and parents. <br>Detailed communication regarding the study's nature, data handling, and objectives was transparently shared with all stakeholders.</p> <p><strong>REFERENCES</strong></p> <p><strong>[1]</strong> A. Nutrient Loading and Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assessments in Michigan Streams (2002-2021)
The assembled data package, including both nutrients and benthic macroinvertebrate assessments from stream monitoring sites in Michigan (USA), is part of the project entitled "Long-Term Nitrogen and Phosphorus Dynamics and Macroinvertebrate Assemblages in Temperate Streams." These datasets encompass records from January 1, 2002, until December 31, 2021, that were extracted from the Water Quality Portal (www.waterquality.us). We were aiming to examine the influence of landscape settings on the concentration of N and P constituents in streams and rivers, and determine the effects of land use on benthic macroinvertebrates in the interaction with these nutrients over 20 years. Records were cleaned and analyzed to determine the influence of land use settings on nutrient concentrations and benthic macroinvertebrate composition statewide. All data tables feature monitoring sites with sampling dates, identifiers, and GPS coordinates.
Critical slowing down: vegetation height, cover and composition assess resilience of tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes following experimental disturbance at twelve sites across the estuarine landscape
We investigated the relative recovery rates of vegetation cover, vegetation height and community composition over a period of >10 years after experimental disturbance in 12 tidal marshes (two oligohaline, three mesohaline and seven polyhaline sites) across the estuarine landscape on the coast of Georgia, USA. Vegetation was removed from three by three meter plots (four per site) with herbicide in 2006 followed by repeated clipping through 2009. Vegetation height, cover and composition was assessed in experimental and control plots (4 of each per site) from 2010 to 2020. The goal of the study was to assess how quickly the sites recovered from disturbance, how this varied in different types of marshes, and how results varied depending on whether recovery was assessed by vegetation height, cover or composition.

Phenological data from tropical latitudes are especially lacking. Recent research has demonstrated that mobilized online herbarium specimens provide important, albeit mostly neglected, information on plant phenology. Here, we use the web tool CrowdCurio to crowdsource phenological data from nearly 35,000 herbarium specimens representing 260 flowering plant species broadly distributed across tropical Brazil. Our results, spanning 120 years and generated from over 1000 crowdsourcers, clarify numerous aspects of tropical plant phenology. First, they reveal that plant reproductive timing is exceptionally diverse across tropical biomes and taxa. Second, they identify that phenological responses to climate are variable across taxa and biomes. Third, among those species with broad latitudinal ranges, populations from more southern latitudes are significantly more phenologically sensitive to precipitation than those from northern populations. Our results are robust to a variety of confounding factors and span large phylogenetic distances and various life histories. These may represent more global trends in the latitudinal gradient of tropical phenological response with myriad potential ecological and evolutionary consequences. Madison community science field campaign to assess abundance and distribution of invasive jumping worms.
Asian pheretimoid earthworms of the genera Amynthas and Metaphire (jumping worms) are leading a new wave of co-invasion into Northeastern and Midwestern states, with potential consequences for native organisms and ecosystem processes. However, little is known about their distribution, abundance, and habitat preferences in urban landscapes – areas which likely influence range expansion via human-driven spread. We led a participatory field campaign to assess jumping worm distribution and abundance in Madison, Wisconsin in September of 2017. By compressing 250 person-hours of sampling effort into a single day, we quantified presence and abundance of three jumping worm species across different land-cover types (forest, grassland, open space, residential lawns and gardens), finding that urban green spaces differed in invasibility. We show that community science can be powerful for researching invasive species while engaging the public in conservation. This approach was particularly effective here, where broad spatial sampling was required within a short temporal window.

Quantitative Assessment of Research Data Management Practices - 2023
<p>This survey investigates <strong>Research Data Management (RDM) practices across five Swiss higher education institutions</strong>, including EPFL, ETH Zürich, Eawag, FHNW, and DaSCH, with the goal of gathering insights into how researchers manage data and code throughout the lifecycle of their projects, as well as using such findings to inform academic services related to RDM for researchers. Previous surveys, conducted at EPFL in 2017, 2019, and 2021, primarily focused on the planning and publishing stages of the research data lifecycle, such as data management planning and open data dissemination. Dataset for Gate-to-Gate Life Cycle Assessment of Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Pre-Treatment
<p>Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for improving environmental sustainability and conserving resources. Due to the diversity of LIB applications and recycling technologies, the environmental and energy impacts are not well understood. Comprehensive assessments must consider the distinct operations, methodologies, technology efficiency, and final treatment of materials. This study provides a partial gate-to-gate life cycle analysis (LCA) of a small-scale recycling plant in the Czech Republic, focusing on pre-treatment of spent LIBs from electric vehicles (EVs) and consumer electronics cells (CECs). The study highlights the benefits of recycling pre-treatment for CECs, significantly reducing environmental impact categories (EICs) such as climate change, eutrophication, and resource use. A high secondary use rate of obtained materials is crucial for environmental benefits, with metal reuse from packaging, connectors, and current collectors being especially important.</p>
Raw Data on Extracellular Particles in 613 Human and 163 Canine Diluted Plasma and Blood Samples Assessed by Interferometric Light Microscopy
<p><span>Extracellular nanoparticles (EPs) are cellular fragments. After being released in cell exterior, they become mediators of the cell-cell interaction. Their characterization in bodily fluids may reflect the clinical status of the organism. Here we present data on the number density <em>n</em> and hydrodynamic diameter <em>D</em><sub>h </sub>of EPs assessed directly in diluted plasma and blood by using a recently developed technique, Interferometric Light Microscopy (Romolo et al., 2022). The data are presented in the attached Table. </span></p> <p><span>We collected 613 blood and plasma samples from human patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) taken into tubes with trisodium citrate and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulants and 163 blood and plasma samples from canine patients with Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). </span><span>The human study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, and approved by the National Medical Ethics Committee of the Republic of Slovenia (0120-271/2022/4; KME 27 July 2022). All procedures in the animal study complied with the relevant Slovenian government regulations (Animal Protection Act, Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 43/2007). The animal study was approved by the Animals in Experiments Welfare Commission of the Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana, approval number 18-3/2022-1. </span><span>Information regarding sample preparation is documented in the MIBlood-EV reports.</span></p> <div> <div> <div><span><a name="_msocom_1"></a></span></div> </div> </div>
