The ASTER dataset for EUREC4A

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is mounted aboard Terra, a polar-orbiting satellite in a descending Sun-synchronous orbit with an Equator crossing time of 10:30 local solar time. ASTER recorded 412 images of trade cumulus cloud fields east of Barbados in support of the EUREC4A field campaign between 11 January and 15 February (Stevens et al., 2021). While the original L1B data is publicly available from NASA EOSDIS, the dataset here includes processed physical variables and geolocation information.
Only bands from the visual near-infrared (VNIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) radiometers are available since 2007. The files therefore include L1B radiances from VNIR and TIR bands, together with geolocation information, a cloud mask, and cloud top height estimates. The cloud mask is derived following a method described by Werner et al., 2016. The cloud top height estimates are derived through an infrared-window approach following Baum et al., 2012. Code for processing the original ASTER L1B data is available in the Python package typhon version 0.9.0, subpackage cloudmask.

ASTER elevation data for the SAFE Project
Description:
These files contain processed data from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument, providing 1 arc second (~30 metre) resolution elevation data across the research areas used in the SAFE Project.

The ASTER data used in these datasets was collected by the NASA TERRA satellite. Although it is freely downloadable, ASTER data downloaded for a project should not be redistributed outside of that project. Accordingly, these data should only be used for research carried out at the SAFE Project.

These files combine four panes of ASTER data to cover the SAFE sampling region and carry out some simple geoprocessing to produce a single output files. Details of the geoprocessing can be found here: https://www.safeproject.net/dokuwiki/safe_gis/aster. In general, SRTM data is preferable for most use cases at SAFE, (see https://zenodo.org/record/3490488) but is provided here for comparison.

Project: This dataset was collected as part of the following SAFE research project: SAFE CORE DATA

XML metadata: GEMINI compliant metadata for this dataset is available here

Files: This dataset consists of 2 files: SAFE_Aster_metadata.xlsx, ASTER_WGS84_raw.tif

SAFE_Aster_metadata.xlsx

This file only contains metadata for the files below

ASTER_WGS84_raw.tif

Description: ASTER elevation data in WGS84 geotiff

Date range: 2010-10-01 to 2019-10-01

Latitudinal extent: 4.0000 to 6.0000

Longitudinal extent: 116.0000 to 118.0000
