Tarmachan Automatic Weather Station (National Trust for Scotland/University of Dundee)

Mountain weather station on the south-facing slopes of Meall nan Tarmachan on the National Trust for Scotland's National Nature Reserve (NNR). The site is at 710 m above sea level, overlooking Loch Tay. Snowcover has historically been an important part of the climate of the site, but in recent years has become increasingly transient.

The NNR is the most important in Scotland for its arctic alpine flora, we are noticing changes in species distribution and to habitats indicative of the effects of climate change. Hence the establishment of this weather station to allow changes in climate at altitude to be monitored. This site installed May 2018 ~20 m beyond the headwall of a disused quarry. Winds may cause undercatch of rainfall (though the gauge is of an aerodynamic design) and more particularly snow. Recorded wind speeds may underestimate winds generally around the mountain owing to effects of the quarry wall.

An earlier site was operated nearby in the early 2000s but sadly data have been lost.

Data are recorded on a Campbell Scientific CR1000 data logger, running with 10 s scan rate and 15 min logging interval.

Snow depths may be inferred by examining TCDT (temperature-corrected depth to target) data - obtained from a SR50A sensor on an arm c. 2.3 m above ground. These are available only for limited periods in 2019 and again winter 2021/22, and are now discontinued. However, snow cover can be inferred by examining the differential between air temperature and ground temperature: the ground sensor is insulated when snow covers the ground.

Sensor details: see metdata

Real-time data are displayed graphically at https://hydro-data.dundee.ac.uk/tarmachan (no downloads)

Data Access Made Easy: flexible, on the fly data standardization and processing (for research automatic weather stations)

Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) deployed in the context of research projects provide very valuable data thanks to the flexibility they offer in term of measured meteorological parameters, choice of sensors and quick deployment and redeployment. However this flexibility is a challenge in terms of metadata and data management. Traditional approaches based on networks of standard stations can not accommodate these needs and often no tools are available to manage these research AWS, leading to wasted data periods because of difficult data reuse, low reactivity in identifying potential measurement problems, and lack of metadata to document what happened. The Data Access Made Easy (DAME) effort is our answer to these challenges. At its core, it relies on the mature and flexible open source MeteoIO meteorological pre-processing library. It was originally developed as a flexible data processing engine for the needs of numerical models consuming meteorological data and further developed as a data standardization engine for the Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). For each AWS, a single configuration file describes how to read and parse the data, defines a mapping between the available fields and a set of standardized names and provides relevant Attribute Conventions Dataset Discovery (ACDD) metadata fields, if necessary on a per input file basis. Low level data editing is also available, such as excluding a given sensor, swapping sensors or merging data from another AWS, for any given time period. Moreover an arbitrary number of filters can be applied on each meteorological parameter, restricted to specific time periods if required. This allows to describe the whole history of an AWS within a single configuration file and to deliver a single, consistent, standardized output file possibly spanning many years, many input data files and many changes both in format and available sensors. Finally, all configuration files are versionned in order to document their history. A web interface has been developed that allows data owners to manage the configuration files for their stations, refresh their data at regular intervals, inspect the data QA log files and allow on-demand data generation. The same interface allows other users to request data on-demand for any time period.

This presentation and software has received funding from the World Meteorological Organization under grant agreement No. 29539/2022-1.9 as well as the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 101003472 (Arctic Passion). It has also been supported by the WSL/SLF over many years and projects.

TEAMx-PC22 (TEAMx pre-campaing 2022) - ACINN automatic weather station data set from Nafingalm

ABSTRACT

This data set was collected with an automatic weather station (AWS) of ACINN at the Nafingalm, Austria, in summer 2022 in the framework of the TEAMx pre-campaign 2022 (TEAMx-PC22). The aim of TEAMx-PC22 was to test new instruments, new instrument configurations and new measurement sites to support the planning of the main TEAMx observational campaign (TOC) in 2024/2025. More details about TEAMx can be found at http://www.teamx-programme.org as well as in Serafin et al. (2020) and in Rotach et al. (2022).

DATA SET DESCRIPTION

1. Location

The AWS was located close to a small lake at the Nafinglam in the Weer Valley, Tyrol, Austria. The exact location is: 47.2151419°N / 11.712628°E / 1928 m MSL

2. Period

The TEAMx-PC22 lasted from mid-May 2022 to early October 2022. However, the AWS data set provided here contains the period from 15 June to 12 September 2022. The time series has a measurement interval of 5 minutes and, depending on the parameter, contains both mean values and instantaneous values.

3. Instrument details

A detailed description of the AWS, its sensors, parameters, calibration and correction procedures is provided as part of the netCDF file metadata, as well as in a PDF file containing the netCDF header extracted with the Linux command ncdump -h.

4. Data file

The data are provided in a single netCDF file teamx_pc22_aws_nafingalm.nc together with a description of its content in the PDF file teamx_pc22_aws_nafingalm_ncdump_output.pdf.

5. Analysis

A first analysis of the data was performed in a Bachor thesis (Viebahn, 2023), which is available upon request from the first author of this data set.

6. Contact

Contact alexander.gohm(at)uibk.ac.at for any questions regarding the data set.

7. References

Rotach, M. W., S. Serafin, H. C. Ward, M. 2-minute PALMOS automatic weather station meteorological measurements (precipitation, radiation, cloud base, temperature, etc.) from Palmer Station Antarctica, 2001 - March 2017.

Automated weather observation station at Palmer Station Antarctica using Coastal Environment sensors. Started recording in November 2001. Overlapped for two years with manual observations. In December 2003, the PalMOS automated report generator was brought online and the manual observations discontinued. The sole manual observation remaining is the daily snow-level and new snow level measurements.
