Forest-wide bird survey at 183 sample sites the Andrews Experimental Forest from 2009 to present (Reformatted to the ecocomDP Design Pattern)

Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA) from 2009-present. We used a stratified, systematic, random design to select sample locations. We conduct point counts on six separate occasions from May – July, which corresponded to spring arrival and subsequent breeding period for the majority of bird species at HJA. Air temperature at core phenology sites and additional bird monitoring sites in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2009 to present
The H.J Andrews phenology study air temperature network includes 16 core phenology sites, 40 core bird sites and 128 auxiliary bird sites. This study examines air temperatures at multiple sites within the Andrews Experimental Forest. Air temperatures were recorded 1.5 m above ground at 184 sites distributed on an 800-m incomplete grid throughout much of the Andrews Forest. Data were collected using automated sensors starting in June of 2009 at 56 sites and in June 2011 128 additional sensors were added. These data document the complex spatial and temporal patterns of air temperature variation within the Andrews Forest, which is governed by multiple processes including inversions, regional air mixing, cold air drainage and pooling, and the effects of vegetation on temperature extremes. The data entities provided indicate various methods of data quality checking over time.
Point-count bird censusing: long-term monitoring of bird abundance and diversity in central Arizona-Phoenix, ongoing since 2000
### project overview Over the past half-century, the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA) has been one of the fastest growing regions in the US, experiencing rapid urban expansion in addition to urban intensification. This backdrop provides an ideal setting to monitor biodiversity changes in response to urbanization, and the CAP LTER has been using a standardized point-count protocol to monitor the bird community in the GPMA and surrounding Sonoran desert region since 2000. The bird survey locations in this CAP LTER core monitoring program include six general site groupings: 1. ESCA. Forty bird survey locations were selected from a subset of the CAP LTER's Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (ESCA; formerly named Survey200) long-term monitoring sites. ESCA sites were located using a tessellation-stratified dual-density sampling design, and, as such, span a diversity of habitats including urban, suburban, rural, commercial areas, parks, agricultural fields, and native Sonoran desert. Earlier versions of this data package included data from the ESCA project that was intended to complement the bird data. However, while positioned in close proximity, the bird survey locations do not necessarily overlap with the 30m x 30m plot that constitutes an ESCA sampling location, and leveraging data from these two monitoring programs should be addressed carefully. ESCA data have corresponding survey location names, and those data are available through the CAP LTER and LTER network data portals. At the conclusion of the 2016 spring survey, fifteen of the ESCA-correlated sites were discontinued as the core monitoring program refocused its efforts on desert parks and PASS neighborhoods. Bird Communities in Forest Openings at Harvard Forest 2014-2015
Currently, many of the most severely declining neotropical migrants in the northeastern United States are disturbance dependent, early-successional species. Much of their decline is attributed to loss of suitable habitat. Large clearcuts (>5.0 ha) are widely considered to be optimal habitat for most shrubland bird species. However, it is well documented that certain species are capable of breeding within significantly smaller patches of habitat (less than 2.0 ha), which are most commonly created through group selection harvest cuttings. The goal of this research is to determine habitat characteristics translatable to habitat value for shrubland birds for use in conservation programs to maximize biological value. This research will provide an assessment of the value of forest openings for shrubland birds, helping to define the suitability of forest canopy openings for specific bird species. This project will describe the conservation value of shrubland openings deemed too small to sustain full suites of specialist shrubland birds by providing threshold patch area values for individual species able to use these smaller patches.
Bird surveys in French Broad River Basin, North Carolina, 2014
This dataset includes counts of birds from surveys conducted in the French Broad River Basin in western North Carolina, USA. This basin is in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Data were collected to examine the spatial and seasonal supply of biodiversity-based cultural ecosystem services (CES), in this case, nature study through birdwatching. The data includes bird species observed at 69 sites on public and private lands during the period 2014-04-01 to 2014-08-08. Bird species were categorized with respect to migration status, level of conservation concern (both based on literature), and relative abundance in the study region (based on eBird data). Environmental data for 56 sites are provided: elevation, early season precipitation, mean summer temperature, land cover diversity, tree cover, vegetation structural diversity, vegetation annual productivity, and building density at local and landscape scales. Graves et al. (2019, doi:10.1007/s13280-018-1068-1) used these data to analyze seasonal shifts in birdwatching supply and how those shifts impacted public access to projected birdwatching hotspots. Landscape patterns of CES supply differed substantially among five CES indicators (total bird species richness, and richness of migratory, infrequent, synanthrope, and resident species). For example, total species richness hotspots seldom overlapped with hotspots of migratory or infrequent species. Public access to CES hotspots varied seasonally. This study suggests that simple, static biodiversity metrics may overlook spatial dynamics important to CES users.
Bird and forest communities in a northern Michigan jack pine stand before and after logging, 2013-2018
This package contains data associated with documentation of breeding-season bird communities in a dry, jack pine and mixed red pine-jack pine forest in Marquette Co., MI. In addition to repeated surveys, 2014-2018, of bird presence in a network of 45 study plots, the package includes vegetation data collected on the same plots 2013-2017. At initiation of the study, the stand was >100 years old and had experienced little or no active management. During the study period, stands were thinned to reduce fire risk, and most jack pine were cut; three plots fell in a control area with no logging. Bird communities and vegetation were sampled repeatedly before and after management activities. Subsequent to the study period, a managed burn affected much of the study area.

CBC02 Winter-spring survival and response of birds to variable climate using mist-net captures at Konza Prairie
This dataset includes captures of small-bodied landbirds captured via passive mist-netting efforts. The objectives are to (a) initiate a long-term survey of the non-breeding birds of the site, (b) understand the behavioral and physiological mechanisms that allow birds to cope with the unpredictable, variable, and often harsh conditions during winter months, and (c) provide a training platform for students. The collection of this dataset is fully integrated into the teaching of “Wild Bird Research” (an undergraduate hands-on research course in the Division of Biology) and less formal instruction in bird research methods for graduate students. Additionally, the banding efforts have benefited from the engagement of Konza Prairie docents and frequently hosts class visits and other visitors interested in witness bird banding operations.
CBP01 Variable distance line-transect sampling of bird population numbers in different habitats on Konza Prairie
Records of bird species based on line transect sampling, giving perpendicular distance of sighting from the transect line on 16 separate transects. Bird surveys were conducted 2-4 times per year in January, April, June, and October for a 29-year period from 1981 to 2009. Transects were designed to determine bird communities and population numbers associated with tallgrass prairie habitats with different experimental treatments (fire frequency, grazed by bison vs. ungrazed), riparian habitats on forest edge, and gallery forests dominated by oak woodland.
PIE LTER surveys of salt marsh breeding birds using point counts in Rowley and Newbury, Massachusetts
This data set contains the results of point count surveys of breeding birds in the salt marshes of the Plum Island Estuary. Surveys have been carried out each year in June beginning in 2004 and are ongoing. Currently six circles of 100 m radius are being surveyed. Three of the circles are in plots that had been regularly hayed and three in unhayed plots. Currently only one of the plots is regularly hayed. 85 species recorded as of 2020. Most frequently encountered are Agelaius phoeniceus, Ammospiza caudacuta, Tringa semipalmata.

Inter- and intra-annual temperature and precipitation variability (1950-2022) across the ranges of non-migratory birds and their association with generation length
While environmental variability is theorized to impact the life history characteristics of organisms, these hypotheses have not been thoroughly tested with empirical data. To fill this gap, we synthesized a global data set of environmental variability metrics and life history characteristics across the ranges of 7,477 non-migratory, non-marine avian species. These data are derived from the ERA5 climate reanalysis, AVONET, BirdTree, and BirdLife databases as well as previously published research. By extracting environmental variability values across individual species' ranges, this data set allows users to evaluate avian species' pace of life in response to environmental change.
Lake Superior NERR, Black Ash Habitat and Breeding Bird Survey, St. Louis River Estuary, WI, 2021
This dataset documented breeding bird communities within black ash forest stands along the shores of the St. Louis River Estuary in 2021. Breeding bird abundance was measured across multiple black ash stands that varied in canopy cover percent, understory density, and overall structural complexity. Data from this work supports the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve and collaborating partners in their ongoing ecological monitoring and habitat management in the St. Louis River Estuary. Data could be compiled with other regional breeding bird surveys or forestry data.

Over the last 30 years, surface sea water temperatures in the adjacent Gulf of Maine have risen at 3 times the global average, rates of sea-level rise have accelerated, and precipitation has increased. Coupled with these changes in climate and sea level are substantial changes within the rapidly urbanizing watersheds that influence water, sediment, and nutrient delivery to the marsh and estuary. In PIE IV our focus is on: Dynamics of coastal ecosystems in a region of rapid climate change, sea-level rise, and human impacts.
