This dataset is used to reproduce the figures in the manuscript "Stochastic data-driven parameterization of unresolved eddy effects in a baroclinic quasi-geostrophic model"

The figures can be created with the following Python scripts:

.

Files from barotropic and baroclinic idealized model runs of the Southern Indian Ocean

These data files correspond to two idealized model runs of the Southern Indian Ocean using the Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) as a framework. Both simulations are forced with monthly mean QuikSCAT winds and are run at a 1/3 degree resolution.

The barotropic model is single layer with realistic ETOPO2 bathymetry, a two arc minute ocean-floor elevation data-set smoothed to a resolution of 55.2 km. The file corresponding to this simulation is named: roms_avg_barotropic.

The baroclinic model is a 1 and a half layer model where the value of the pycnocline depth and the reduced gravity parameter is set at the initialization stage. Two simulations are presented, the first where 'relaistic' initialization parameters of H=800m and g'= 0.0134 m/s(^2), and the second where the density gradient between the active and passive layers is reduced to a g' of 0.0076 m/s(^2). The two data sets corresponding to these simulations are titled: roms_avg_800_0134 and roms_avg_800_0076

Below find a list of variable names and descriptions:

zeta=anomaly in thickness of active layer
ubar= mean zonal velocity of active layer
vbar= mean meridional velocity of active layerh=depth of bathymetry in barotropic model; pycnocline depth in baroclinic model
coast=coastline
lon_rho=longitude corresponding the density coordinates
lat_rho=latitude corresponding the density coordinates
lon_u=longitude corresponding the zonal velocities
lat_u=latitude corresponding the zonal velocities
lon_v=longitude corresponding the density velocities
lat_v=longitude corresponding the meridional velocities
time=days since model simualtion started

Representation of submesoscale baroclinic instabilities in ROMS and MPAS-O

Idealized Model Outputs

This dataset archive contains a subset of the model outputs that are necessary for reproducing the analyses presented in the accompanying manuscript. The datasets correspond to either the MPAS-O or ROMS ocean models at resolutions ranging from 10 km to 100 m. Velocity and corresponding invariant (vorticity/divergence) variables and tracer variables are saved here with only their surface values. Additionally, all variables except those required to compute kinetic energy time series over the simulation period are only saved for a time window that corresponds to the shaded region in Figure 4 of the accompanying manuscript. Some grid metric variables necessary for MPAS-O calculations are also included within "MPAS-O_Initial_*.nc" files. There are two zipped tar directories (mpaso_winds.tar.gz and roms_winds.tar.gz) containing the outputs of all wind stress sensitivity tests needed to recreate the results shown in Figure 2. All datasets are saved in NetCDF format.

Data and Code Supplement for "A Mountain-Induced Moist Baroclinic Wave Test Case for the Dynamical Cores of Atmospheric General Circulation Models"

Code and Data Supplement for "A Mountain-Induced Moist Baroclinic Wave Test Case for the Dynamical Cores of Atmospheric General Circulation Models"
===========================================================

This directory contains the data and scripts used to create the plots from our publication as well as the source
code modifications necessary to run this test case within the CESM and MPAS models.

Generating Plots
---------------

The `netcdf` directory contains the nominal half-degree runs necessary to generate nearly all of the plots from the paper. The one plot which is not reproducible from these data is the volume-integrated Eddy Kinetic Energy in the Spectral Element model. Storing high-resolution 4D wind fields requires a prohibitive amount of space. These data can be provided by the corresponding author, O.K. Hughes (owhughes@umich.edu). However, because this is several hundred GB of data I would strongly recommend generating these high-resolution runs yourself on your local system if you need them. Using 288 Intel Skylake cores (that is, 8 nodes each with two 18C processors) ran on the order of an hour.

In order to generate the plots from the paper, you need only install NCL and then run run.bash. Instructions for installing NCL
can be found in the `run.bash` script.

Source Code Modifications
----------------

CESM
The `src` subdirectory contains the files `user_nl_cam` and `ic_baroclinic.F90`. Create a case using `--compset=FKESSLER` and `--run-unsupported` options when running `create_newcase`. If your case is located at `${CASE_DIR}`, then from within the directory containing this README, run `cp user_nl_cam ${CASE_DIR}/user_nl_cam`, and then run `cp ic_baroclinic.F90 ${CASE_DIR}/SourceMods/src.cam/`. Then build and run the model using the usual workflow.

MPAS

The MPAS code was run using a branch of the MPAS model provided by the model developers to the authors. While the source code modifications are provided in the `src` directory, I would strongly recommend contacting the corresponding author if you wish to run this test case in the MPAS codebase.

Acoustic Mid-Ocean Dynamics Experiment (AMODE), 1991, North Atlantic: High-frequency Baroclinic Mode-1 Amplitudes

A netcdf data file of high-frequency (> 1 cpd) baroclinic mode-1 amplitude in the western North Atlantic derived from ocean acoustic tomography data collected during the Acoustic Mid-Ocean Dynamics Experiment (AMODE) in 1991. AMODE consisted of a pentagonal array of six moored instruments deployed between Puerto Rico and Bermuda. These are baroclinic amplitudes averaged over paths several hundred kilometers long. As documented in:

Dushaw, B. D., & Worcester, P. F. (1998). Resonant diurnal internal tides in the North Atlantic. Geophys. Res. Lett., 25 , 2189–2192. doi: 10.1029/98GL01583

Dushaw, B. The file includes 15 time series of 100 to 300 day record length.

The purpose of this upload is to allow others to estimate tides from these data to test baroclinic tidal models. Other than a simple high-pass filter, the time series is unfiltered, but the baroclinic tides account for 30-80% of the variance, depending on the amplitude of the tide on the acoustic path.

Baroclinic instability induced mesoscale and submesoscale processes in the river plumes: A laboratory investigation on a rotating tank

This dataset studied the baroclinic instability (BI) induced mesoscale and submesoscale processes by conducting laboratory rotating flume experiments. We acquired the high-resolution velocity data by Parrticle Image Velocity (PIV). The mesoscale and submesoscale vortices were identified and tracked, and the variations of the instabilities and kinetic energy of the plume system under different inflow conditions and slopes were summarized. Number '1' to '33' mean cases number; 'gs', 'ss', and 'ns' stand for 'gentle slope', 'steep slope', and 'no slope'; 'T20' to 'T60' correspond to the rotation period from 20 to 60 s; 'g4' to 'g10' correspond to the reduced gravity between the buoyant plume and environmental fluid from 4 to 10 cm/s^2. 'vor_char' means the vortices characteristics including the time series of the vortex center and vortex contour.

Baroclinic energy conversion in Mars Reanalyses

Vertically integrated baroclinic energy conversion in the Mars Analysis Correction Data Assimilation (MACDA), Open-Access to Mars Simulated Remote Soundings (OpenMARS), and Ensemble Mars Atmospheric Reanalysis System for the ensemble average (EMARS) and representative member (EMARSmemb) for the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) and Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) eras. Note MACDA does not have an MCS era, so there are seven (7) files. Included in each file are the BCEC (time x lat x lon), Mars year (time), Areocentric Longitude (time), latitude (lat), and longitude (lon) in each file. The files are named using the convention "BCEC_[reanalysis]_[instrument].mat". BCEC units are W/m-2; areocentric longitude, latitude (north), and longitude (east) units are degrees.

See the publication for more information: Battalio, J.M., 2022. Harmonic Constants for Baroclinic Tide Prediction
This dataset of Harmonic Constants for Baroclinic Tide Prediction was produced by Edward Zaron (Oregon State University) and Shane Elipot (University of Miami). It provides sea surface height and ocean surface currents associated with the predictable astronomical tide at the M2, S2, N2, K1, and O1 frequencies. The tidal harmonic constants, in-phase and quadrature with respect to the equilibrium potential, are provided on a latitude/longitude at 1/20-deg resolution. Using the software available at the Github repository, the dataset can be used to predict baroclinic tidal sea surface height and surface ocean currents at arbitrary time and location throughout the world oceans.
The harmonic constants were estimated within the time period from 1993 to 2021 and incorporate roughly 30 years of multi-satellite altimeter data and 20 years of data from drifting buoys. The observations were combined with a kinematic wave model and the internal wave polarization relations to prepare uniformly gridded estimates from the sparse and irregular data sampling. These files may be used by the altimeter community to compute corrections intended to remove baroclinic tidal variability from sea level anomaly observations. Researchers with an interest in ocean surface currents may also use these data to predict baroclinic tidal surface currents. Such information may be used to plan observational campaigns or optimize the design of future surface current mapping satellite missions.
This dataset is funded by NASA SWOT Science Team award #80NSSC21K0346 and NSF Physical Oceanography Program award #1850961. The software to make baroclinic tidal calculations using this dataset is regularly updated at the provided Github link, and an archived snapshot of the software is also provided in the documentation. The harmonic constants and prediction software may be updated every few years as additional data for mapping the tides becomes available.
