Proximal and ultimate influences on planform change in Bayou Pierre, Mississippi

Channel incision and associated planform changes are widespread in the Gulf Coastal Plain of the United States, following a century of sediment reduction activities. These processes cause numerous threats to infrastructure, social, and ecological systems. While the drivers of channel incision are well documented for some watersheds in the region, others remain understudied. Bayou Pierre, Mississippi, is a small watershed draining directly to the lower Mississippi River with a contentious debate regarding origins of erosional processes. The watershed is home to one listed species (Bayou Darter Nothonotus rubrus) as well as a diverse aquatic biota assemblage. Determining potential drivers of erosional activities in the watershed will be critical for effective mitigation or restoration activities. This dataset compiles information from numerous other datasets to construct histories of Mississippi River architectural change, land use change, and climate patterns to construct a history of potential erosional influences in the watershed. It further contains original measurements of planform dynamics over a sixty year period, and analyses of how changes to planform relate to recent and historical influences. In addition, a secondary assessment of both accuracy and precision of measurement methods are included.

Fluvial geomorphic evolution and stream fish community trajectories in the Bayou Pierre, Mississippi

Changing environments place stresses on ecosystems, and are contributing to widespread losses of biodiversity and ecosystem function. Comparisons of historical and contemporary data offer considerable utility in understanding how ecosystems respond to, adapt to, or recover from changing environments. Stream fishes offer a particularly interesting study system for this topic, as streams are naturally dynamic environments and human needs have placed increasing pressure on aquatic systems. The effects of fine sediments on stream fishes and aquatic ecosystems more broadly have been well studied. Yet studies from fluvial geomorphology have resulted in models of watershed morphological evolution which encompass far broader processes and changes to aquatic systems. Our dataset integrates a fluvial geomorphic approach to characterize stream channel and habitat evolution over a four decade period in the Bayou Pierre, Mississippi, an ecological approach to study related change in stream fish communities in the same watershed, and analyses linking the two. Fluvial geomorphic processes were characterized both from remote sensing data sources for historic and contemporary time periods, and local fish habitat data for contemporary time periods. Historical fish community data were extracted from museum records, and contemporary fish community data were collected via sampling for fishes at the same localities as historic efforts using similar methods.

Long-term minnow community data from the Bayou Pierre, Mississippi

Long-term community monitoring is becoming an important tool for ecological studies. Historical data are present in a variety of sources but often require considerable effort to extract, filter, and verify prior to analyses. In this dataset we document minnow (sensu lato, Cyprinidae + Leuciscidae) communities in the Bayou Pierre, Mississippi. We include filtered community data from twelve localities and three time periods (1974-75, 1985-89, 2019-20) derived from a mixture of literature, museum collections, and contemporary collecting efforts. All collections were made using comparable methodologies. We also include an additional 29 contemporary collections which do not have historical representation but which cover the majority of the watershed. We further include a trait database coded from literature values which captures both reproductive and ecological traits for the species in these data. These data were used in preparation of a manuscript examining long-term taxonomic, ecological, and functional change within the minnows in the Bayou Pierre, and they are part of a broader research effort to study the effects of fluvial geomorphic evolution on aquatic ecosystems.
