Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorbance from lagoon, ocean, and river sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2021-ongoing

Multiple water types (river, lagoon, ocean) from the North Slope of Alaska and nearshore Beaufort Sea are sampled seasonally by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Water samples from multiple depths are collected during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods, filtered, and analyzed for light absorption spectra within 24 hours of collection. Wavelength-specific light absorption coefficients are reported between 250 and 600 nanometers. The data is organized in "long" or "tidy" format, with columns of station, date, wavelength, and absorption. Please see included MakeColumnsAsWavelengths.R, MakeColumnsAsDates.R, and ReshapeDataInExcel.txt for some common ways to reorganize the table for further CDOM analysis. In 2022, data from 2019 were removed due to quality issues (please see revision 1 of this dataset for 2019 CDOM values). For users who may have used 2019 data from this dataset, there are additional files to inform decisions going forward. "BLE_LTER_CDOM_2019_sample_flags.csv" lists which 2019 samples are entirely unreliable, versus usable with caution. "BLE_LTER_CDOM_2021_blank_mean_sd_absorptions.csv" lists mean and standard deviations at each wavelength from all blanks taken in 2021; this is meant to give info on the instruments used and will not be updated further. Please see the methods section for more information on 2019 data.

Spot and continuous seasonal pCO2 sensor measurements from lagoon and river sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2019-ongoing

pCO2 (partial pressure of carbon dioxide) was measured in multiple seasons and depths in coastal ecosystems as part of the Beaufort Lagoons Ecosystems LTER core sampling program. Sites include several Beaufort Lagoons from across the North Slope of Alaska and several river sites near the lagoons. Data includes averages of sensor data for each site and depth deployment of pCO2 (uatm), CO2 (ppm), water temperature (°C), and absolute pressure (kPa). Standard deviation is included for pCO2 (uatm). Surface measurements were taken either 30 cm below the water surface, or bottom of the ice in ice-cover season, and bottom measurements were taken 30 cm from the seafloor of the lagoons. For lagoon sites, data were logged every one or five minutes; for river sites data were recorded every five minutes. Each site and depth was recorded for at least 30 minutes and up to four hours and taken as spot measurement.

Carbon and nitrogen content and stable isotope compositions from biota samples from lagoon sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

Stable isotopic composition can be used to differentiate between predominantly marine and terrestrial food sources in nearshore marine food webs. The Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program employs spatial and temporal sampling regimes to track shifts in diet, both seasonally (ice cover, ice break-up, and open water), and spatially among lagoons along the Alaskan Beaufort Sea coast. Ice coring, net tows, ponar grabs, and trawls are employed to collect organisms associated with the sea-ice interface, the water column, and the benthos respectively. Tissues are analyzed for stable isotopic composition as well as organic carbon and nitrogen content.

Ice core, auger hole, conductivity, and shapefile data to determine bottomfast sea ice extent from lagoon sites along the Beaufort Sea Coast, Alaska, 2017-2021

The shapefile represents bottomfast sea ice (BSI) extent in lagoons along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast during winter and spring, 2017-2021. It was created by digitizing extents from interferograms from the Alaska Satellite Facility Vertex portal. The result is used to identify BSI lateral extent in Arctic lagoons during the growth cycle seasonally. Comparing to future interferograms will identify the trend of BSI within Arctic lagoons. Each feature is attributed with applicable date range and area. Accurate data for the initial growth and maximum extent of BSI could only be collected for the winter and spring months. After the last collection in the spring, there is likely still BSI; however, the surface processes that take place after this point prevent further readings. For early winter time periods, if there are interferograms available (2017 and 2018 data had gaps in interferogram collection as Sentinel-1 was still new), the first date collected can be considered the onset of BSI formation. Ice cores are collected using a Snow, Ice, and Permafrost Research Establishment (SIPRE) corer and measured for salinity. The data is logged in Excel format following Seasonal Ice Zone Observing Network (SIZONet) practices, making it compatible with the PySIC Python toolkit for analysis. The auger data identifies key measurements collected from in-situ observations. Data are collected along five surveys and saved as a single CSV file. The data represent a 1-D representation of each auger hole. The data are used to verify satellite interpretations of BSI extent. The apparent conductivity data includes values at three frequencies (1000 Hz, 4000 Hz, 16000 Hz) recorded during the spring of 2021 in Western Elson Lagoon. Data are saved as an EMI file, which is a CSV format with specific column names and header information. MATLAB scripts to read and interpret data are included in this data package. Physiochemical water column parameters and hydrographic time series from river, lagoon, and open ocean sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

To understand circulation and seasonality as part of the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystem Long Term Ecological Research program, temperature, conductivity, salinity, pressure, depth, and current velocity are recorded hourly in situ, starting August 2018 in lagoons across the Beaufort Sea coast (Elson Lagoon, Kaktovik Lagoon, and Jago Lagoon). Moorings include combinations of 1) RBR Concerto CTDs with temperature, conductivity, and pressure sensors; 2) StarOddi CTs with temperature and conductivity sensors; and 3) Lowell TCM-1 Tilt Current meters with MAT-1 Data Loggers for velocity and bearing. In addition, during BLE LTER's annual sampling, water column physiochemical parameters (chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, phycoerythrin concentration, pH, temperature, conductivity, salinity) are measured by hand with a YSI data sonde at river, lagoon, and open ocean sites along the Beaufort Sea coast. Here we provide both quality controlled in situ mooring data and all YSI sonde data.

Sediment pigment concentrations from lagoon sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

The Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (BLE LTER) project seasonally collects undisturbed surface sediments during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods from lagoon sites along the Beaufort Sea (Elson, Simpson, Jago, and Kaktovik lagoons, plus Stefansson Sound) to quantify algal pigment concentrations. Pigments reported are chlorophyll a, pheophorbide, pheophytin, chlorophyllide, fucoxanthin, zeaxanthin, alloxanthin, and peridinin. Pigment concentrations are measured using high-precision liquid chromatography (HPLC). Concentrations are represented both as an areal basis (mg/m2 of surface sediment) and a mass basis (μg/g of dry sediment). In 2022 we found that a post-analysis mathematical error generated incorrect concentration values for pigments. This error was identified in subsequent QA/QC and immediately corrected since the raw data were not in error. The entire dataset to date (2018-2021) was revised in spring 2022 with the corrected data (revision knb-lter-ble.12.2).

Species richness and abundance of benthic infauna found in lagoons along the Beaufort Sea Coast, 2018-ongoing

Quantitative benthic invertebrate surveys can be used to characterize and compare benthic community structure of nearshore Arctic lagoon systems. The Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (BLE LTER) Core Program employs spatial sampling to compare benthic community structure among lagoon systems along the Alaskan Beaufort Sea coast and temporal sampling to track benthic community structure across the three major seasons of the Arctic (ice cover, break up, and open water). Ponar grabs, hollow-core drills (SIPRE corer), and 0.5 mm sieves are employed to quantitatively sample meiobenthic and macrobenthic communities during all three Arctic seasons. All invertebrate specimens are identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, preserved in 100% ethanol, and enumerated. Wet weights in ethanol are also recorded.

Sea ice thickness, snow depth, and sea ice freeboard in lagoon sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2019-ongoing

Physical parameters related to snow and sea ice have implications for lagoon circulation, sea-air heat exchange, and underwater light regimes. To understand these relationships and their greater effect on ecosystem function, the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystem LTER (BLE LTER) uses in situ methods to assess snow depth, ice freeboard, and ice thickness in select water bodies across the Beaufort Sea coast (Elson Lagoon, Simpson Lagoon, Kaktovik Lagoon, Jago Lagoon, and Stefansson Sound). Sea ice thickness is the distance from sea ice bottom to top, not including snow. Freeboard, determined in the same drilled hole, is the distance from the surface of the water to the top of the ice, not including snow cover. These measurements are made annually, close to maximum ice thickness (typically April).

Decomposition of soil and permafrost organic matter eroding into the Beaufort Sea near Drew Point, Alaska

Arctic coastal erosion mobilizes large quantities of permafrost organic matter to the Arctic Ocean, where it may be decomposed, releasing carbon dioxide. To quantify the biodegradability of this eroding material, we designed an aerobic bottle incubation experiment to measure CO2 production from coastal soils/sediments submerged in seawater. Seasonally thawed active layer soils and permafrost were sampled near Drew Point along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast. Cores were taken from three surface geomorphic classifications common in this area: primary surface that has not been reworked by thaw-lake cycles, a young drained lake basin, and an ancient drained lake basin. Core subsamples were chosen to represent three distinct horizons present in eroding bluffs at Drew Point: seasonally thawed active layer soils near the tundra surface, Holocene-age terrestrial soils and/or lake sediments, and late-Pleistocene age relict marine sediments. Soil/sediment subsamples were mixed with Beaufort Sea surface water and incubated in triplicate at 4C and 16C for 40 days. In addition, a subset of soil/sediment samples were incubated with and without seawater at 16C for 40 days. The data reported here summarizes the results of the incubation experiment for each soil sample: cumulative CO2-C production over 40 days normalized to dry weight and to organic carbon content (OC), average rate of CO2 production normalized to dry weight and to TOC, and the percent of OC remineralized over 40 days.

Free water metabolism (FWM) derived net ecosystem production (NEP) from lagoon sites along the Beaufort Sea Coast, Alaska, 2019-ongoing

Continuous measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO) in order to calculate daily values of free water metabolism (FWM) derived net ecosystem production (NEP) at several core Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE-LTER) stations. These deployments were done in addition to year-round core program BLE-LTER mooring deployments during the under ice sampling at surface and bottom depths (April/May), and during open water season in bottom depths (July/August). Gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and the sum of the two: net ecosystem production (NEP) are reported in mol C m-2 day-1.

Daily summer riverine and groundwater pCO2, dissolved oxygen, and ecosystem metabolism from sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2019-2022

Three riverine systems near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, are sampled regularly by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program in order to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Sampling includes one intermediate river, Avak Creek, and two smaller streams: the Mayoeak River (thermokarst stream) and a beaded stream. In 2019, 2021, and 2022, we performed additional sampling at these core program sites, with continuous monitoring of the streams between late June and August. Continuous measurements included riverine discharge, pCO₂, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ecosystem production, along with periodic grab samples of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In 2022, there was also monitoring of groundwater wells at the two streams, capturing continuous hydraulic head and groundwater pCO₂, in addition to grab samples for DOC. Daily averages of continuous data and DOC laboratory results are presented for surface water and groundwater. This dataset is not part of the BLE Core Program and is not currently planned as an ongoing effort.

Ice, water, and sediment pigment concentrations from Beaufort Sea lagoons core program stations, 2023-24

Bottom ice (&lt; 20 cm), water column, and undisturbed surface sediment samples from the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystem Long Term Ecological Research programs were collected, in tandem, from core program sites in ice-cover (~April), ice break-up (~June), and open water (~August) seasons of 2023, and ice-cover 2024, to quantify algal pigment concentrations and variations in an annual cycle. We also ran historical samples from 2021 sampling seasons. This data can be used with analysis programs such as CHEMTAX or PhytoClass to elucidate microalgal community structure. Fourteen pigments were measured, including chlorophyll a, fucoxanthin, zeaxanthin, alloxanthin, peridinin, prasinoxanthin, lutein, chlorophyll c<sub>3</sub>, 19-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, and 19-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin. Phaeopigments (pheophytin, pheophorbide, and chlorophyllide a) were also included in these analyses. For sediment samples, the values of chlorophyll a, fucoxanthin, zeaxanthin, alloxanthin, peridinin, pheophytin, pheophorbide, and chlorophyllide a can be found in the core program pigment dataset, which is a continuously collected data set (<a href="https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/5294f45c9c7287903078926a487f1fd7" style="text-decoration: underline;">Sediment pigment concentrations</a>). Pigment concentrations were measured using high-precision liquid chromatography (HPLC). Concentrations are represented as μg L<sup>-1</sup> for both ice and water column samples, and as μg g<sup>-1</sup> for sediment samples.

Arctic fish biomarker profiles from Beaufort Sea coastal lagoons, 2017–2022

Fish sampling occurred in three regions across the Beaufort Sea coast: Elson Lagoon in Utqiaġvik, Stefansson Sound in Prudhoe Bay, and Kaktovik and Jago lagoons in Barter Island (city of Kaktovik). Arctic fishes were collected to determine trophic niche overlap by determining stomach contents, bulk carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (SI), compound specific stable isotopes of carbon in essential amino acids (CSIA-EAA) and their fatty acid (FA) profiles. Fishes were collected in each of the three regions during the open water season in August 2021 and 2022, with supplemental samples collected in 2017 – 2019. The target fish species included three diadromous species: Arctic Cisco (Coregonus autumnalis), Least Cisco (Coregonus sardinella), and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), and three marine fish species: Polar Cod (Boreogadus saida), Saffron Cod (Eleginus gracilis), and Fourhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus quadricornis). Up to ten individuals per species per region were sampled, but not all species could be collected in all regions. Stomach contents were reported as the total number of individuals per prey category for the following categories: Amphipoda, Polychaeta, Harpacticoidea, Saduria entomon, Nemertea, Priapulida, Cumacea, Mysidacea, Calanoidea, Larval fish, Chironomida, Insecta, Misc. Stable isotope values of δ13C and δ15N are reported as “del_13c” and “del_15n”, respectively. Individual fatty acids are reported as the percent relative to total fatty acids for 35 fatty acids: C8:0, C10:0, C11:0, C12:0, C13:0, C14:0, C14:1n5, C15:0, C15:1, C16:0, C16:1n7, C17:0, C17:1, C18:0, C18:1n9 trans, C18:1n7, C18:2n6 trans, C18:2n6 cis, C18:3n3, C18:3n6, C20:0, C20:1n9, C20:2n6, C21:0, C20:3n6, C22:0, C20:4n6, C20:3n3, C20:5n3, C22:1n9, C22:2n6, C23:0, C24:0, C22:6n3, C24:1n9. Stable isotope values of δ13C are reported in the following essential amino acids: Valine (Val), Leucine (Leu), iLeu (isoleucine), Methionine (Met), Phenylalanine (Phe), Lysine (Lys).
